@mysteryskater48: actually (and not to be an asshole), you're both wrong. the bass sound is emulated by his digitech whammy pedal, although in this song he IS using an open tuning (which means that if the strings are all played open, or on one particular fret as with a slide, it will form a chord as opposed to the sound of an EADGBe)

He's using a ElectroHarmonix Polyphonic Octave Generator to get the famous sub-octave effect, giving the song that "bass" sound on a standard guitar. He also uses a BigMuff distortion and sustainer to make the acoustic guitar sound electric, a Digitech whammy pedal to hit the highest notes (especially used in the solo), and I believe on this song is using an open tuning, from his Boss TU-2 pedal.

@tjproto: almost right. he uses the EHX POG on "blue orchid" and "slowly turning into you", in which you'll notice there is a combination of low and high octaves. in most of his songs, jack's low and high pitched effects are achieved using a digitech whammy pedal (which lowers or raises octaves). also, this guitar isn't an acoustic -- it's an electric Kay hollowboy. just trying to help out.
