  • it's a of best gary´s videos.that version of this music is fantastic.Very beautiful!

  • i think the pickup in the bridge position is for the midi adapter witch is right next to the poti. but there is a pikupfurther up, so i guess it picks up more like this mid sounds. acctualy his tone has much low mids and has this long sustain quality due to the strings beeing so close to the neck, respectivley him playing very soft.

  • how he get that fat tone just with one pickup in the bridge position? just boosting lows in the amp or what?

  • What device is that on his bass, where the cord/s(?) plug into?

  • @CSAN33 It is a Roland GK-3B MIDI pickup. It converts the sound into MIDI signals so that the player can play any MIDI instrument, often synth sounds. Think of it as providing a much wider tone palette.

  • him played this song and "Very Early" with Allan Holdsworth in None Too Soon plus Kirk Covington.

  • Every Bass Player should watch these videos of Gary Willis. Even Professional Bassists. This is what music means...Art, Feeling and Talent. Gary Willis shows how Bass should be played. God Bless you man.

  • This is very beautiful. I hear this melody in my head sometimes during the day. Gary introduces some nice substitutions to an already great song. The tone of his fretless is...wow!

  • If only this were recorded properly. What a shame.

  • @beefcake192

I know. I just had this handheld camera and in PAL it is better quality but still... you're right. Willis should make an album with these kind of songs. But I guess he 's a guy of no-compromises and probably would find it too much 'easy listening' .

Also watch my other upload of him playing Very Early and listen to songs like " Hymne' and " the Everlasting Night " on the album 'No Sweat'. The all have these great melodic lines.

  • thats so beautiful im falling asleep its so soothing

  • Cheap bridge and cheap fret board ?

Why ibanez doesn't sell it cheaper ?

  • I had the honor of being in this room, listening to Mr Willis for almost 2 hours... unforgettable...

Thank you for posting this video :)

  • que cojones hace? intenta complicar la cancion ...la esta cagando

  • @embasaoalvacio

sabes lo que es el LENGUAJE CONTEMPORANEO??

o como tensionar los tiempos (bueno, alargarlos)?

  • Just straight up tasteful playing.

  • Beautiful playing!

  • I was pressed for time and really wanted to click on other videos but was drawn into this performance and watched/listened to the entire thing.

  • is this the ebony or ebonol board?

  • @MoMotheBASSplaya Yes it has a Ebonol board on it!

Theres really only two ways to go, Ebonol board or Epoxied Rosewood

Ebony just don't have the crisp.

  • Wow, very tasteful.

  • does anyone know what that thing attached to his bass is?

  • @jsutton414 It's a hexaphonic pickup (reads every string separately), for changing acoustic signals into digital ones, that way you can control a synthesizer, in this case a Roland V-Bass.

  • Wow, that's awesome. Thanks so much for the info.

  • @jsutton414 is something like a extra pick up from Roland, I think that in fact that stuff can give you some distortions and synths but I`m not shure, check it bt your self, its call Roland GK-3 or some thing like that, I hope it respond your question

  • Roland Midi Pickup, you need it for the V-Bass Preamp Gary uses here in this vid.

  • Greatest fretless player!

Oh yeah, V-Bass... nice... do they work well on fretless? Amazing...

  • Comment removed

  • @420witchdoctor Dude, Gary Willis exclusively plays fretless basses. His bass (I own that model too) has only got drawn lines for better orientation. Don't you hear the typical mwah sound?

  • OK, I see.

  • There is a Roland V-Bass!!xD

  • Ow God...

  • right!

  • THAT, is music.

  • stunning..

  • #.%

  • see guys... other bass players! no flash no super speed just beautiful tone nice lines played wonderfully.. it's not about speed and flash and showing off your chops! it's about the sound the song being played the "Music" as a whole... I could listen to stuff like this all day... "Bass Solos" mostly just bore the hell out of me and it's like watching someone masturbate in front of you... and I am a bass player... this is wonderful... a real pleasure to hear.

  • man i agree with you 100%. I get so sick of all the people that oooo and ahhhhh over victor wooten just because he's playing something fast and something that is difficult to play. dont get me wrong, vick is great, but THIS, this has so much more taste, even though it is so much less.

  • @jsutton414

Dude all due respect, but Victor can & does play like this as well! Everything is not all flash/fast all the time! Look up Vic playing fretless bass too see what I mean. Also check out the stuff he does with The Flectones. He always serves the song, not ego!

Gary's palying is amazing here! Now go listen to some of that Tribal Tech stuff where they can sometimes kill you with chops for 10mins! Both great cats! Both have the ability to play beautifully!

  • Your wrong,,,,,it IS all about chops...:)

    pork chops

  • LOL!! Center Cut

  • @salvadoredelle Well said sir!

  • @salvadoredelle as a bassist myself..i totally agree with you...its all about the music, feel, and the groove :)

  • @salvadoredelle Wanking is for sissys =)

  • @salvadoredelle To me, its this guy that is masturbating... If by masturbating you mean liking what you play, I masturbate everyday, but to another kind of groove. I like his "The chicken" playstyle a lot more.

Anyhow.. to each his own masturbation style I guess!

  • @salvadoredelle You are right, this is great stuff. But, it is a style of playing and all kinds of people like all kinds of styles. The bassist that play extremely fast with skill and precisian are just as talented as this guy. There's no need to trash them for their chosen style. I'll be willing to bet that this guy in the video can play fast and flashy solo's if he so chooses. In any case, I really enjoyed this video.

  • Gary!!! MASTER!!!

  • Gary Willies! Amazing Bass wonderful sound, one of the best Bass Players out there!

  • pure music...

  • for this track....the best esibition...big gary.....thanks for your talent!!!!

  • Yo Willis!

One of the short-list of greats that has an individual "voice" through Jaco, not a copy.....*cat*, GW, the one and only.

    Hey Willis!

Ice Soccer is tough in Spain. Keep it cool - it is a really great sport!

    Thanks you for posting Emilk!

  • The great Willis! love this guy. Has anybody ever seen him without a hat?

  • For me He is the GOD of fretless actually...He makes the bass "sing" much better thans Alain Caron!

But this video gary forgot to tune the B string :)

    Awesome video!

    Thanks for this treasure Emilk!

  • He makes the bass sing.

    Wonderful stuff!

  • sweet

  • Great to see you're back, Emilk!! Youtube was not such a great place without you in it.

I showed your Gary vids to my friend Vance's daughter Lily (who is learning the bass). (Vance is the surrogate Ian Anderson in my Jethro Tull tribute vids).

Vance let us know that Gary hung out for an afternoon in Vance's kitchen, playing a standup bass quite a while back. I also recognize the mountain bike trails in his current lead video... they are very near my house.

  • Hi Emile,

    Thanks for uploading this video.

Beautiful songs, and amazing playing, as usual for Gary Willis ;-)

    Cheers,

    Bruno
