i think the pickup in the bridge position is for the midi adapter witch is right next to the poti. but there is a pikupfurther up, so i guess it picks up more like this mid sounds. acctualy his tone has much low mids and has this long sustain quality due to the strings beeing so close to the neck, respectivley him playing very soft.
@CSAN33 It is a Roland GK-3B MIDI pickup. It converts the sound into MIDI signals so that the player can play any MIDI instrument, often synth sounds. Think of it as providing a much wider tone palette.
Every Bass Player should watch these videos of Gary Willis. Even Professional Bassists. This is what music means...Art, Feeling and Talent. Gary Willis shows how Bass should be played. God Bless you man.
This is very beautiful. I hear this melody in my head sometimes during the day. Gary introduces some nice substitutions to an already great song. The tone of his fretless is...wow!
I know. I just had this handheld camera and in PAL it is better quality but still... you're right. Willis should make an album with these kind of songs. But I guess he 's a guy of no-compromises and probably would find it too much 'easy listening' .
Also watch my other upload of him playing Very Early and listen to songs like " Hymne' and " the Everlasting Night " on the album 'No Sweat'. The all have these great melodic lines.
@jsutton414 It's a hexaphonic pickup (reads every string separately), for changing acoustic signals into digital ones, that way you can control a synthesizer, in this case a Roland V-Bass.
@jsutton414 is something like a extra pick up from Roland, I think that in fact that stuff can give you some distortions and synths but I`m not shure, check it bt your self, its call Roland GK-3 or some thing like that, I hope it respond your question
@420witchdoctor Dude, Gary Willis exclusively plays fretless basses. His bass (I own that model too) has only got drawn lines for better orientation. Don't you hear the typical mwah sound?
see guys... other bass players! no flash no super speed just beautiful tone nice lines played wonderfully.. it's not about speed and flash and showing off your chops! it's about the sound the song being played the "Music" as a whole... I could listen to stuff like this all day... "Bass Solos" mostly just bore the hell out of me and it's like watching someone masturbate in front of you... and I am a bass player... this is wonderful... a real pleasure to hear.
man i agree with you 100%. I get so sick of all the people that oooo and ahhhhh over victor wooten just because he's playing something fast and something that is difficult to play. dont get me wrong, vick is great, but THIS, this has so much more taste, even though it is so much less.
Dude all due respect, but Victor can & does play like this as well! Everything is not all flash/fast all the time! Look up Vic playing fretless bass too see what I mean. Also check out the stuff he does with The Flectones. He always serves the song, not ego!
Gary's palying is amazing here! Now go listen to some of that Tribal Tech stuff where they can sometimes kill you with chops for 10mins! Both great cats! Both have the ability to play beautifully!
@salvadoredelle To me, its this guy that is masturbating... If by masturbating you mean liking what you play, I masturbate everyday, but to another kind of groove. I like his "The chicken" playstyle a lot more.
Anyhow.. to each his own masturbation style I guess!
@salvadoredelle You are right, this is great stuff. But, it is a style of playing and all kinds of people like all kinds of styles. The bassist that play extremely fast with skill and precisian are just as talented as this guy. There's no need to trash them for their chosen style. I'll be willing to bet that this guy in the video can play fast and flashy solo's if he so chooses. In any case, I really enjoyed this video.
Great to see you're back, Emilk!! Youtube was not such a great place without you in it.
I showed your Gary vids to my friend Vance's daughter Lily (who is learning the bass). (Vance is the surrogate Ian Anderson in my Jethro Tull tribute vids).
Vance let us know that Gary hung out for an afternoon in Vance's kitchen, playing a standup bass quite a while back. I also recognize the mountain bike trails in his current lead video... they are very near my house.
it's a of best gary´s videos.that version of this music is fantastic.Very beautiful!
