i started to pick up licks from duane then to warren and then to derek. Ive been playing slide for probably around 3 years and only now have i weened myself off of using a pick.....arlen roth helps too

If memory serves, Derek uses DR strings. I'm not sure what kind specifically though

They are DR's, you have to combine a heavy gauge pack and a medium gauge or somethin. I have mine strung like that and it sounds great.

something that helped me with slide: bend and tuck that left hand pinky under the neck. that helped my control a ton.

no special set up for slide. if you want you could raise the action a little to make it a little easier. people usually like to play slide in an open tuning such as open E or open D or even open A. other than that theres not really any special set up. i wondered the same thing when i first picked up a slide cause it sounded like a whole forest of creatures all dying at once, but the unfortunate truth is that it just takes lots and lots of practice

My name is Dylan, I'm 18 and from Louisville Kentucky and I love what you're doing in your videos. I play a dobro in open E for my slide instrument of choice. Playing derek trucks licks in a different tuning than open E sounds really awesome. Because you aren't in open E they aren't half as easy to play(it looks like)and you have to do alot of moving of your slide to get those notes that are now spread several steps apart. Haven't heard a better derek trucks approach
