I love the sentiment behind freeganism. I think the problem is that it has a bit of a silly name, so people dont take it seriously. his is perhaps a silly comment though.
I didn't realise just how much food, or anything fo that matter, was being thrown away until I started working in a large chain super store. It sickened me to see carts full of cakes, roasted chicken, produce, you name it, being tossed in the trash compactor. No one at work likes it, but we do it because there are too many self-centered fools out there that would just love to give us a lawsuit. It's unfortunate, that throwing things in the trash compactor has become a form of insurance.
you are so right about how u have to throw away food as a form of insurance so that some selfish person doesn't sue the business. talk about too much right for the common man and how they abuse these rights given by law.
Best times to dumpster dive are late evening or early morning when temps are cooler and these are the times stores are restocking because new deliveries have come in. Also pay attention to favorite restaurants and when they put food out. I recommend sandwich shops that place wrapped sandwhiches out. And if possible take one of the ice chests on wheels with you that you have cold packs in to keep the fruits/veggies/dairy cold.
I think opening a restaurant and making food from dumpsterdiving freegan co-op and reselling it would be a great way a for a Chinese immigrant like myself coming from Xiamen could do to make money.
I can understand this freegan ideology. It just kills me to see the reckless waste at most if not all fast food joints. Take this for ex. You order a double cheeseburger with no onions. You get onions, so you return the burger. They replace the whole burger, and throw your old, hot burger with onions on it in a garbage bin. It then likely goes to a landfill. Great waste, something that some poor family could eat in a 3rd world country and live another few days.
My fiance told me about freeganism and how he was one in college. I got bored and looked it up. So here I am and tomorrow Im going to tell him I want to go dumpster diving. and for those of you defending the economy. There is nothing wrong with recycling the planet and its gifts to us. By consuming and spening money for the "economy" you are supporting slave markets in other countries, being wasteful and only thinking about yourself. If something is good why reinvent it. Im converting tomorrow.
(continued) hink like this. the decades most influenced by consumerism in the 20th century were the 1920's,1950's, and the 1980's. now look at those times. notice how we were happy, prospiring, and had that "american dream" attitude. those were good times, anyone can agree. take a llok at our world today. inluenced by movements such as freeganism, and look at our country. i dont know about you, but i'd say we were better off with consumerism.
its also these type of people that are half the reason why we cant get our economy back together, the other half is obama. and while i hate obama, these people are worse.when i buy an new car, im not just buying it for me, im helping our economy. i like being a consumer. think like this. the decades most influenced by consumerism in the 20th century were the 1920's,1950's, and the 1980's. now look at those times. notice how we were happy, prospiring, and had that "american dream" attitude.
Interesting that you mention the American Dream bullshit, prosperity and liking being a consumer in the same post. You truly have been brainwashed and are a model citizen of the Brave New Consumer World.
If you are into consumerism commentary and sarcasm, have a look at channel "StillUsing". We're looking for other users who, instead of buying the latest technology, are happy to keep using older ones, for the lousy reason that they still work. We're hoping for some real finds: typewriter, tape recorder, etc.
We're also making fun of consumerism with our "still using" channel. Pretending that using outdated technology is like drug use that needs to be cured. Because that's the message we get from ads and media. Gotta have the latest iPad, iPhone, etc. We're hoping that other youtubers (that's you!) will come and share their usage of "outdated" technology...
People that dont believe in consumerism are the Consumers themselves having no care for the word ruining our planet causing pollution and Global Warming
I can understand fruits, vegetables, breads... but stuff like meat and eggs (or anything that needs refrigerating) would concern me because you never know how long it's been in there without refrigeration.
I know places like bakeries and places that sell produce waste a lot because consumers tend to be picky. There is also so called liability reasons for so much waste. Where I work currently they have a small grill and put stuff in a warmer to keep till a certain time. After that time anything left is throw out. I make it a habit to ensure someone gets the food so it doesn't get thrown out even if I take it home myself. I also seen bakeries throw out good bread because it's not "fresh".
I think this is great. Why get rid of good things. I did this back in my study days, and I am going back to it because my income allows for Rent OR Food. I pay rent and cant afford much else. I have very little clothing and my food is scarce. I am inspired to do some ultimate recycling. I encourage others to reuse and recycle as it makes for a better future. Good luck everyone.
Not a fact. Yes you have consumed to acquire a computer. However, depending on your reason to buy and your intended use, it doesn't make you a consumer. For example, buying second hand, maintaining and repairing your computer instead of throwing it away and replacing every few years.
@anthonini7 A used computer for $40 can still have working discdrive, printer, software, monitor, keyboard, etc. Why throw it away? When you upgrade sell used computer but erase any personal information you don't want others to know.
@anthonini7 A used computer for $40 can still have working disc drive, printer, software, monitor, keyboard, etc. Why throw it away? When you upgrade sell used computer but erase any personal information you don't want others to know. I bought 4 suit jackets and a raincoat for $1 each at one yard sale, also 4 pairs of shoes for $1 each at another, 178 used vhs tapes at another yard sale for $10. If I bought all that stuff new it would be several hundred dollars, why waste good merchandise?
i think a lot of this can be over politicized, i think its common sense to 'not let good food go to waste' i think thats quote unquote my mam! It seems like an awful waste that so much energy and effort goes into making these products from farmer through production and packaging for all that to be dismissed and just chucked back in the landfill, "sur fuck it we'll just make some more" .
Wow, you are no better than a catfish being a bottom feeder. You don't even want to work for food. The Free Market wouldn't even consider consuming you because you taste like the crap you eat.
@redicculus ??? what are you trying to prove.. some people are starving not because THEY DONT WANT TO WORK.. but because there are no jobs or they dont make enough at there job to pay there bills. im watching a video on how to get free food because i dont have money to buy food.. you are obviously some wasteful careless person.. go do what you do .. but dont make fun of these ppl or call them catfish bottom feeders.. there finding fruit and vegetables that still look editable to me.. bye
@gman586 ...or get a computer for free ! i actually know someone who didn't pay for any of the parts of his computer since he found all next to trash cans. but you can also find a lot of things on one of the now numerous ad sites where people propose to give away things instead of throwing them away.
I do my part not throwing good food away. And there's always someone here who needs your old shoes and clothes. Also, there's people who collect reciclable good to sell, and they make a living of it.
So, I think it would be unfair with these people, if I can work and make a living, why would I compete with people who can't?
But in the USA, known worldwide as the most consumers and wasters in the world, I would surelly practice freeganism!!!
That's very interesting. Too bad i can't do it here in Brazil. First, there's the heat, wich makes every food that is out of a refrigerator rot in a couple of hours. Then, there's bugs and rats that contaminated everything on the garbage (wich is not placed separated, everything is trown away together). And in the end, you have to compete with the thousands of homeless and very poor people who really need this to survive.
@sucodefeto Looks like it'll be the same way in America soon enough the way things are going. Perhaps it's a good thing that Americans will learn the difference between what they want and what they need.
@TheLonghairraven i found a lot of my clothes in trash cans. and generally , you clean vegetables with water , scrubing them thoroughly. you can also clean them with a brush , but when they come out of a trash can it would be more appropriate to use water.
Not the waste that the world produces only the countries that waste are the countries with the plenty lot. A starving person does not waste, but we are told to buy, buy, buy not save!!
I find this very interesting but I doubt I'll be able to do that. I am trying to change my consuming ways I am unhappy with how America is these days.
@Gerlandox How exactly is TAKING garbage from the dumpster GIVING anything? God, the comments for this video are awful. It's sickening that an elitist attitude can come from dumpster diving. America being wasteful should not lead to "I'm going to eat from a garbage can and that makes me a better person". If you had any sort of desire to be less wasteful, then you should only buy what you can eat and recycle instead of hoping on the freegan circle jerk train.
You guys think you have invented something? People have been doing this for decades, if not centuries. But to assume that making purchases is "overconsumerisn" is a jump, & certainly not very free market capitalist.
Why does it sound as though you have a grudge? No-one has claimed to have invented anything, the people involved are giving an insight into their lifestyle. This was about re-using food and having a different frame of mind. If you have watched the full film they talk about over consuming food and the act of throwing away good food, so yes 'over consuming' is bang on. No-one says making any purchase is over consuming, that is not the point. You seem to have missed that any way.
