A few things about the Winchester campaign. As someone else noted before this ad came out after the ban on cigarette ads. Winchester got around this temporarily by claiming what they were advertising were not cigarettes but baby cigars. However eventually the censors got wise to this and pulled this ad as well.
I believe Farrah Fawcett also did some campaigns for Winchester around this time but due to the ban probably never appeared in any television commercials for them.
So, let me get this straight.....the babe sees Mr. Winchester ambling by, stops her rag-top (she's the one driving), pops her hood, pulls the wire from the distributor cap, and tells fancy-boy they've run out of gas. He buys it and trots out to the gas station. Ooookay.
bevep I remember a commercial for little cigars (may have been Winchester) featuring a gorgeous brunette (may have been the same woman as in this commercial) with strikingly beautiful blue eyes singing 'I like it long'. Because of the song title the commercial wasn't aired for very long. I not only can't find any info on it ... I can't find anyone who's even seen it. - If you have any info please contact me thru YouTube... thanks
What are special about Winchesters? There's a guy who comes into the Rite Aid I work at and buys a pack a day. Even though they're like 7 bucks a pack.
Thanks but I was refering to back when those commercials were on the air. I've been smoking real cigars for years. I like a variety of imported hand rolled cigars.
These are the cigars Burt Reynolds used to smoke. I've tried them and all I can say is whatever you do DON'T inhale or you'll cough till you throw up a lung. Carol Burnette did a parody of these cigars on her old tv show. It's hilarious.
I have mixed thoughts watching this video. It's great to be the cool dude that the girls all swoon over, although "Mr. Winchester" would probably be laughed at as being a pretentious dork today........and there's this: I wonder if "Mr. Winchester" was in the cancer ward a couple of decades after they made this commercial? And since when would a man walk off and leave his wife / girlfriend / whatever with a total stranger? He's probably a smooth-talking serial killer stalking the roadside.
I remember those from when I first wanted to smoke cigars, partly because I loved the smell of a cigar.
I bought a pack of those and was really dissapointed. They didn't smell anything like a real cigar. I hadn't learned to smoke cigarettes yet and didn't inhale, so I didn't enjoy those at all.
i "dig" her "groovy" sunglasses!!! and the blonde cowboy with that sexy mustache, uhhhh!!! if i could just go back in time and find me a "sex machine" that looked like that!!! i would be in "heaven"!!! he was TOO DAMN SEXY!!! i wish i knew who he was and where i could find him. i bet he still looks good after all these years!!! BABY!!!!
These ads originally appeared during the 1972-'73 season, and used Santana's "Evil Ways" as its jingle (which wouldn't be the last time a classic rock song was used for "profitable purposes").
Damn--this shit give me the willies in a bad bad way. Watch out for people who smoke these things--they look to be pedophiles who are on something a whole lot stronger than tobacco. Also, the idea that smoking this nasty shit will make you sexy enough to be an asshole with impunity--just hilarious.
This ad is most interesting, primarily because it came out shortly after *cigarette* advertising had been *banned* in the US. But Winchester is not a *cigarette*, but a "whole 'nother smoke" . . .
This is a VERY cool commerical. I also like the Winchester commercial that takes place on the beach... Does anyone have any of those Edie Adams Muriel cigars commercials?
This gorgeous girl is a Classic me-generation totally 70's chick. Her beauty haunts me to this day. Kudos to the collector who uncovered this clip. I'm also searching for another equally compelling clip featuring an Alaskan Babe touting 'the taste of freedom' in a Tijuana Smalls little cigar advert from the same enchanting period.
how did they get this commercial on tv? I thought cigarette commercials were banned.

Triva ... That's Jimmy Griffin (of Bread) singing the vocals.
BTW, Farrah Fawcett did the commercials for Muriel Cigars.

The kind of stuff Carlos Santana smokes is a little stronger than this.

I wonder if it was deliberate to make the boyfriend very jewish to contrast with their WASPish hero.

That woman is gorgeous. She looks like Sharon Tate, only brunette. The smoker guy is pretty easy on the eyes, too.

No, they draw the smoke into their mouth and blow it straight out, just like any other cigar.

I usally smoke Djarum cloves, so going to these to save a few bucks was a big mistake... they're AWFUL.

I do have to say that the actress is very hot. But she is now probably in her late fifties, wrinkly and speaking with a deep raspy voice.

Why did Santana authorize this? In those days it was a career killer to license a song for a commercial.
MondoBeno 4 years ago
Santana may not own the copyright. That's why someone else is singing the song.
