Sonic 3 with Knuckles is my favorite of the 2D games. If you put a non-Sonic 2 or 3 game on the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge you could play the special stages. Good for practice! :D

if you really want extra lives, the easiest way to do it is to spindash on those alarm thingys on launch base. some stupid birds keep diving to their deaths and give you more and more points. its like one bird each 3 seconds and 1 life every 5 birds. you can get as many lives as you want like that. not that you'll keep them, the counter glitches after 99 lives and im not sure exactly what happens, but im pretty sure you dont get to keep anything more than 99 if you die even once.

The thing that sucks about modern Sonic games is that there is a S. Sonic stage. Don't get me wrong, they are very awesome, but why can't you just do what you do in the older games, collect the Emeralds in one mission, then use them throughout the game?

FACT: After you beat the Sonic 3 stages, you can go to Hidden Palace in Mushroom Hill and depostet any Chaos Emeralds (If you had 7, when you leave Hidden Palace you CAN'T GO SUPER!!!) Then you jump on a "Sleeping Emerald" and go to another special stage. The easiest ones are near the Master Emerald in the center. Once you get all seven you can go HYPER SONIC!!!! There's only a few diferent things about HS from SS: HS is color changing and he double jumps. He might run faster, I haven't tested.

Fun fact: stick sonic 1 into sonic and knuckles, when the "hey you're doing it wrong" screen pops up, you can hit some buttons and you get a bunch of different random special stages you can play through for shits and giggles.
