I think Jack's character was more true to the Joker of the comic strips. I also like his better, personally, although Ledger's was pretty good too (RIP)

This arguably makes him a more powerful villain, but the Nicholson one is generally regarded as more entertaining (in a show-stealing way.)
Heath , he is amazing , truly sensational :) sure jack sticks to the 'original' joker look , BUT Heath absolutely destroys everything that has been before and set a NEW look and feel which is so much more realistic and epic . RIP Heath ledger
So, this Joker was made when another, future, Legerian, Joker, was a child. All I can say for Leger was that he earned an-hero status; Jack is alive and still doing what he loves (and people love him for his being alive, not some shoddy, almost-botched suicide).

there is somthing that is really scary about this film, especially the joker. This was the first film i watched as a young child (from the age of about 2/3?) i used to run behind the TV looking for joker... LOL. maby its the reason i turned out the way i did. ha ha

I think both Nicholson & Heath played the part wonderfully, but personally I prefer Heath as his character was more believable. However It does all come down to personal choice and we must respect eachother's views. Both actors were perfect choices for the role.

The Joker doesn't just sit there without a smile on his face and then murder mobsters with a serious look. Nolan's Joker was more on the psychopath side. But he wasn't lacking the crazy qualities that the Joker was made from. Nicholson's was the smiling, laughing side of the Joker from the 30s onward. The newer comics are more on the evil-motivated side
Nicholson's Joker had everything Ledger's character didn't. It's a damn shame Nolan had to squander decades of comic mythology, Joker wasn't even the biggest problem in TDK. If only Burton had made the films...

I like both jokers, but Nicholson is the ONE. No one will ever touch it, I said that before the Dark Knight was released, and I said it after Ledger's death. He did a great portrayal of a messed up individual, but the joker of Batman 1989 will always be the one and only. He scared the living piss outta me as a kid, and nowadays he cracks me up so bad its just an all time perfect film.
Now that's a joker. Much better than Ledger- he's more charismatic and has a much better make up :D Ledger's joker isn't bad, but I don't know, he's kinda... Not Joker-style.
Loved Jack Nicholson. Loved the newer Dark Knight movie. Just love this one, because it is more of a classic Joker, using tricks like flowers that spray acid and all of that. While Dark Knight's joker was straight up knifes. Only thing I did not like about Dark Knight, they did not give much back story about Joker (with the exception with his stories about his scars) as Tim Burton did in his Batman. Dark Knight made Joker pop out of no where.
I remember playing the game for this movie on the Commodore 64. I used to be absolutely terrified of dying in the game, because the Game Over screen was Jack's Joker grinning at you menacingly. Scary as fuck.

@ryanthethird heath ledger's version was not over-acted...it was just a different spin...he was a psycho who didnt need the swag that the joker is supposed to have...it was different in comparison to what we saw played by Jack Nicholson (who did pretty good) but heath ledger's (or Christopher Nolan's) version of the Joker was sooo good cuz it was not expected!
Nicholson or Ledger... both are brilliant, 100% perfect to wear the Joker's face. I couldn't think of someone else.... maybe Morgan Freeman... hahahah...
I'm inclined to edge more for the Ledger joker because of the "Realism" of his psychosis, but Nicholson's is so in keeping with the comics and animated series. THe over the top, chaotic nature, in which he acts and formulates schemes is captured beautifully be Jack
I like Jack's Joker better. He IS actually a darker character, it's the make-up (I think) and the visage of the character that overshadows the darkness of Jack's Joker's heart.

Nicholsons joker wasnt really based off of the comics. Jack Nicholson actually said he didnt portray the joker as "true" to the comics.. Heath Ledger did.

Heath Ledger was the absolute perfect fit for the world Christopher Nolan created. There is no comparison. Both actors, while playing entirely different character types, were absolutely masterful in their work.

@ThePoetech actually the Dark knights joker was more closer to the comics joker bc nolans joker was a crazy mother fucker and thats pretty much who the joker in the comics was suppost to be.
Example: Nicholsons joker went out screaming, but when Ledgers joker was thrown off the building he laughed because he was happy batman killed him but when batman saved him from falling to his death he was disappointed but i know even after all i said and proved you wrong you wont care think your right

The Joker doesn't just sit there without a smile on his face and then murder mobsters with a serious look. Nolan's Joker was more on the psychopath side. But he wasn't lacking the crazy qualities that the Joker was made from. Nicholson's was the smiling, laughing side of the Joker from the 30s onward. The newer comics are more on the evil-motivated side

Nicholson's Joker had everything Ledger's character didn't. It's a damn shame Nolan had to squander decades of comic mythology, Joker wasn't even the biggest problem in TDK. If only Burton had made the films...

I like both jokers, but Nicholson is the ONE. No one will ever touch it, I said that before the Dark Knight was released, and I said it after Ledger's death. He did a great portrayal of a messed up individual, but the joker of Batman 1989 will always be the one and only. He scared the living piss outta me as a kid, and nowadays he cracks me up so bad its just an all time perfect film.

Loved Jack Nicholson. Loved the newer Dark Knight movie. Just love this one, because it is more of a classic Joker, using tricks like flowers that spray acid and all of that. While Dark Knight's joker was straight up knifes. Only thing I did not like about Dark Knight, they did not give much back story about Joker (with the exception with his stories about his scars) as Tim Burton did in his Batman. Dark Knight made Joker pop out of no where.

I remember playing the game for this movie on the Commodore 64. I used to be absolutely terrified of dying in the game, because the Game Over screen was Jack's Joker grinning at you menacingly. Scary as fuck.

Heath Ledgers Joker wasn't scary; it was over-acted.
Jack Nicholsons Joker was perfect! Hilarious, Evil, and Funny as shit, but funny in a way that you still know he'll kill you when he's done laughing. This is probably my favorite villain role EVER PLAYED BY ANYBODY!!!

@ryanthethird heath ledger's version was not over-acted...it was just a different spin...he was a psycho who didnt need the swag that the joker is supposed to have...it was different in comparison to what we saw played by Jack Nicholson (who did pretty good) but heath ledger's (or Christopher Nolan's) version of the Joker was sooo good cuz it was not expected!

I'm inclined to edge more for the Ledger joker because of the "Realism" of his psychosis, but Nicholson's is so in keeping with the comics and animated series. THe over the top, chaotic nature, in which he acts and formulates schemes is captured beautifully be Jack

@ShawniBawni i'd say that nicholson was more creepy, and ledger was neurotic...i honestly feel like pure mayhem is the jokers character...although nicholson is chaotic, ledger was pure mayhem, they both were brilliant at producing chaos, in the end ledger WAS the chaos, not just the cause of it, but his very being WAS chaos....he had nothing to lose and nothing to fear, he showed how much he cared about the world and himself by burning billions, and by risking his life in the flip of a coin!

Nicholsons joker wasnt really based off of the comics. Jack Nicholson actually said he didnt portray the joker as "true" to the comics.. Heath Ledger did.

@ShawniBawni I absolutely agree. Heath Ledger said basically the same thing- it was a different world entirely that Tim Burton created, and Jack Nicholson was the absolute perfect fit for it. Heath Ledger was the absolute perfect fit for the world Christopher Nolan created. There is no comparison. Both actors, while playing entirely different character types, were absolutely masterful in their work.
