  • Imagine bands today experimenting like ELP, ELO, PInk Floyd, King Crimson and others did back in the day? lol Let's see Lady Ga Ga, Britney, or Jessica be real musicians. Today, if you're hot, can dance with half decent voice, your in. Sad.

  • Hè! bèh! ....c'est beau.... èh ?

  • This "Does it for me" when strung out and heavily in need of my ELP fix. One of their earliest and imo best tracks. Still brilliant nearly 4 decades later! Great upload and thanks for sharing!

  • Great voice.

  • camcon, nice and accurate point

  • omg i havn't heard this tune since the 70's. gee i had this 8 track tape also.

    wow! thanks

  • God i love this... to guts. I've always kept Lake really good singer too btw, like his voice a lot!

  • First time I saw ELP was in 1973 on the Trilogy tour at thr Academy of musioc in NY. They did Take a pebble and opened the show with Hoedown. Sorry, but the new group today are not even musical. Who plays a piano like Keith EMerson or can play the drums like carl palmer?

  • Where is this show played at?

  • @rocker70sman Lyceum Theater, England. It's from the Pictures at an Exhibition concert in 1970.

  • One of the greatest bands of all time!

  • Anybody here who could give me the lyrics that Greg Lake improved in the second part .... ?

  • @27FreedomMan "Ihad a dog and his name was blue, betcha five dollars he's a good dog too, blue chased a possum up the cinnamon tree, the possum looked down and blue looked at me" It's actually from a Byrds song called `Old Blue' .

  • @beebfader - Afraid not. It was around long before the Byrds. "The Ballad of Ol' Blue" is a 19th century American folk song. The opossum was in a "simmon" tree, a rural America pronunciation for "persimmon" tree. It does sound like Greg says Cinnamon" tree, though. :-)

Betcha five dollars he's a good dog, too!!!

  • @48Sage Didn't know that ! We live and learn :-) I notice others mentionned it too....I guess Roger McGuinn `borrowed' heavily from all sorts of places...thanks for the education !

  • @beebfader - You're welcome! I love these guys!! :-)

  • just look at Greg's smile at 4:58.

  • Thanks a lot for putting this up! Absolutely AMAZING!

  • Wow they're so young back then! I mean duh, but lol. It's just so strange to see them that young.

  • I saw them at the now (very defunct) Fillmore East in 1971. Amazing then...and still amazing. They are reuniting for a show in London...next month or two I believe. Would love to go.... I had tix for Emerson and Lake in LA but had to go out of town last minute....I'm still not happy about that! Heard it was a great show.

  • Got to love ELP and this song

  • seen them live in Atl. Ga. 6 times O M F G first show was72

  • . .cool . .I wondered how he got that autoharp sound . .

  • Where is the 2nd part of this ? At he end of this clip Emerson just starts to rip on his solo.

  • Comment removed

  • j'écoutai "take a pebble" il y a 35 ans et c'est toujours aussi magique!!

  • Yea, I agree, it was the best of times. Artist experimented with all kinds a ways to record (analog) way before digital took the creativity out of things. Don't get me wrong you can get creative with digital but think about it if you didn't have it, how would you create that sound you are looking for? Hummm?

  • one of the few piano solos in rock history and for sure one of the best keith emerson is a beast...

  • the middle country part is something greg wrote but would just play live sometimes for take a pebble

  • Re: scottybeans - Sorry, but Greg Lake did not compose the "middle country part". The "Ballad of Ol' Blue" is a 19th century folk ballad.

  • i apologize 48Sage

behind on my 19th century folk ballads i guess

  • @scottybeans

    No problem. Now you know.

  • wow just so nice

  • Music doesn't sound like this anymore.

  • is the folk song in the middle part of take a pebble, if not, what's its name?

  • This is how it sounds on the album.

  • Actually, this is not the way it sounds on the album.

  • I don't care what anybody sez. The 70's were the absolute best of times for recorded music.

  • @glimmer2158 amen- concerts too.

  • @glimmer2158 Recorded, concert, whatever.

  • @glimmer2158 Fact.

  • Greg is just magical ^^

  • ELP is AWESOME.

  • perfect

  • Saw them in Chicago in 1972 - a great show, even if I did have to sit through Dr. Hook first :) We were so lucky to have been around for all of those concerts in the late 60's and early 70's.

  • no such bands anymore...

    :/

  • Marvelous

  • there are lots of different videos of ELP named like this, that's why I asked d'OOOOOOhhh

  • @noctisimperatrixx - There are different videos of ELP performing "Take A Pebble" from their first album from 1971 entitled Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

  • What is the name of this song?

  • What? It's the title of the video: Take a Pebble

  • It's "Just Take a Pebble"

  • No ! But is the intro of the text of this song

  • True ! is the title !

  • Great Video Thanks! i saw ELP at Hollywood Bowl In1972 they were fantastic!

  • I'm envious. I saw the '74 tour, but always wished I'd discovered them earlier. Would have LOVED to have seen the Tarkus or Trilogy tour.

I would drive 500 miles for a good concert back in the day.....

  • In 1974 was a big concert in California Jam

  • 4:57 what a smile. omG

  • How fortunate I was to find this classic on you tube. It is certainly one in a million - what incredible talent all in one group - and that Greg Lake voice - wow

  • I'm 30 years old. The first time I came across ELP was 15 years ago. And I was impressed - the combination rock and classic. Now I refreshed my cd collection and I could cry: this is simply the best, most wonderfull, most intelligenct, most emotional, other superlatives music I've ever heard. And I totally agree: the voice is just perfect.....................

  • Greg's voice always sends me to another place, but his rich range is particularly beautiful in the beginning of this song. I'm glad Keith is playing the piano in the back instead of the moog. Playing the piano strings was originally done by Keith Jarret and sounded great in "Forest Flower" but on this tune, it's a bit too contrived.

  • Forest Flower is amazing, very true.

  • Gregs voice takes me to another place.

  • Yes absolutely!

  • Great Song!! Greg Lake...what a voice, what a voice, what a VOICE!!!

  • Yeah rorrance, absolutely unreal!

  • thats simply, i love the voice of Greg Lake and the music is fantastic, all them are a masters

  • I saw them several times back in the day. keith always had the show stuff going. Knives to the keyboard. A moog that opened up into a monster and the grand piano that was flipping end over end while he was playing it. But I think I was most impressed when they were playing some of that wild off time stuff and instead of looking like total concentration Greg and Carl were joking with each other while doing these crazy hard time signature thingys

  • It is wonderful...nobody can explain this song 'cos it simply perfect...love ELP.

  • Damn, this is one of my favorite live performances from them, sometimes they butcher their stuff live but that was great.

  • They are all fantastic, a true supergroup.

  • Keith and Greg are awesome, to be sure, but what about Carl Palmer? I only saw them once, during their Brain Salad Surgery tour in '73. Carl had the most awesome drum set up ever, and he was a machine! The concert was four hours, and he is one hell of an athlete! I think he could have won a Tour De France Stage for sure, if not the whole thing!! ahis timpany and gong work, plus the synth boxes he had were truly breakthru stuf. What a lucky man I was to see them at their summit!

  • exactly ..couldn't have said it any better..they were soooo great

  • Saw them on this tour, I remember Greg's dead animal on his shoulder, ha ha! And Keiths knives, fabulous! But I don't remember the year. Spectrum, Philly.. anybody know when it was?

  • That was a bit before my time, but based on their appearance, this is most likely between 1971 and 1973. Plus they're playing a small venue here, and by about '74 or so they were doing arenas and stadiums.

    That's my guess, anyway.

  • boy does EL&P bring back memories.... listening to this with big ass bass heavy speakers... his warm honey voice, wow, we loved these guys!

  • Este video demuestra que ELP, fueron grandes maestros del Rock,y lo seran por siempre

  • Great Song.

  • The Fathers of Progressive Rock! Its just so much talent, no words. I have tears in my eyes.

  • One of the greatest music of every time.

  • Hendrix almost joined but he died. Would've been a sensation.

  • HELP?? ELPH?

  • it' s one of the best band of all the time, the part of lake is so beatiful, do you know what is the guitare that he use ?

  • Lake is really a bass player by trade, but he developed into a first-rate but underrated gutair player

  • Really?? I thought Greg Lake was the most underrated vocalist on the rock scene.... ever!!

  • Quote: "Lake is really a bass player by trade, but he developed into a first-rate but underrated gutair player."

Actually, Greg started out as a guitarist and played guitar in his pre-King Crimson bands. When he joined Crimson, they already had a guitarist (Robert Fripp) but needed a bass player, so Greg switched to bass. So the story goes anyway.

It would probably be more accurate to say he's more a guitarist by trade than a bass player. Obviously, he played both in ELP. :-)

  • and Lake even took lessons from Fripp.

  • @onnomon - Negative. Lake and Fripp had the same guitar teacher. :-)

  • @camcon05 LAKE WASN'T a bass player. He was lead guitarest. There is a difference

  • What DVD is this on?

  • omg to see them live first show was 1973

  • Leave it to Keith Emerson to use a grand piano as a huge zither! Saw them live in Asbury Park Convention Hall. Keith sticking knives between the key of a Hammond M-100.

    so amazing!!!!!!

  • is the video avalaible on DVD???

  • Yes, the video is part of a DVD that you can buy

  • Correction: The entire Pictures at an Exhibition suite -- from the same concert as this -- is commercially available on DVD. However, this song and several others from the same show did appear briefly at one time (either as part of a concert film, or on Laserdisc or video -- I'm not exactly sure about this) but have since dropped off the commercial market. Traders have it if you really want it.

  • So beautiful... love ELP.. love this song

  • My all time favorite ELP Song!

  • and they were so young; carl may have been about 20, greg 22 or 23 and keith maybe 26; that is a lot of talent on stage...

  • ELP Forever

  • Wow... what talent!!! I saw them at CalJam and got so close I could see the gleam in Greg Lake's eyes and the red of Keith Emerson's eyes as he shredded the keyboards after the show. A memory that will remain with me forever... and then some!!!

  • Un attimino pacchiano sto video eh...però vabbè sono forti su

  • This is really a beautiful song. :)

  • This is the one I was looking for! Don't know how I missed it when I searched before. Thanks. My favorite (of many) ELP album cuts & a good live version of it.

  • Fab

  • Everytime I hear an ELP song, I say "yup" that one is my favourite. The truth is I'd be hard pressed to decide. I love love love Knife Edge, but hearing this again - wow.

  • strin^g

  • I never knew that sound effect was a result of diddling with the piano strin

  • Greg Lakes guitar playing is so crystal clear!

  • could you not continue this with a part 2??

  • You can find a sort of part 2 here: v=DHlyhnCjEg0

  • shame you cut it short. why?

    plenty of time for more.

  • at last some people don't scratch unless its absolutely necessary

  • sheer poetry !!! greg lake is the best !!!

  • I play the piano. And I can tell you that the piano part here is everything but easy.

  • I'll second that!

  • Has Anybody Ever Thought That The Wah-Wah Guitar On "Still...You Turn Me On" Was Lake's Tribute To Hendrix?

  • Great stuff. Haha, I could not picture Randy Bachman being in ELP.

  • What a trio...Greg has pure and strong vocals..love it!

  • Great Song.

  • Awesome!

There are no videos of "Tank" on youtube...

  • It is fun to toy around with the thought of Randy Bachman or Jimi Hendrix in this band.

  • If today's music had the depth and beauty of ELP, I would turn on the radio more often. They took the intensity of symphonic harmonies and fused it with modern rock. What a time it was.

  • does anybody has the score of the solo ?

  • I found one on Ebay. There's occoasionally one floating there.

  • simply brillant

  • music at it's purest...masters of musicianship...had not heard this song since 1982...1st video too...awesome!!!!

  • WHERE IS THE PIANO SOLO NOOOOOO

  • that version is too long to upload the one with take a pebble, lucky man, piano improv, than take a pebble is very long and I dont have a video...but if you want the recording i could e-mail it

  • 22 minutes.

  • I love the first album. Good stuff. Sounds even better live.

  • Takes me back to a time when tomorrow was forever...

  • One Of The Most Beautiful Songs Ever...

  • Great song!
