I don't think peta was trying to straight up attack mario without a message, the video on their site says something like "in mario e wears a tanooki suit but in real life they are beaten and skined alive for their fur". they were probably trying to use the fact that it was mario to grab attention to the real issue, that tanookis are actually being tortured for their fur.

Peta knows Mario didn't actually skin a tranooki alive. They aren't really saying the creaters of Mario are bad people.
But because Mario is such a popular character, they used the game to send their message, as they knew it would be widespread. They are simply trying to show the world how the tanooki are skinned alive for their fur and that it needs to stop.
You have to do something big and stir attention to get real things done, in these times.

He's been stomping on turtles, wearing other different COSTUMES of animals, and riding Yoshi throughout his career and only NOW are they complaining?

I've never actually thought about it being a real fur at all, i only saw it as being more of a cosplay thing, or Mario actually becoming the flying squirrel (or whatever the fuck it may be).
Kind of like the frog powerup actually. But maybe that's different since minks and shit like that actually do get skinned while frogs don't? I don't know...
