there are indeed many styles of singing byzantine music. i myself have been trained in the aghioritic style which is more simple.I find the patriarchal style too elaborate , but that is my personal opinionwhich may not be shared by others.
Angelopolouos has resurrected tropararia comp[osed by by St john Koukouzelis which are absolutely beautiful and belong to the style sung in the 14th Century
If Patriarchal style, is the style of chanting that was heard in the Liturgy when the Pope visited the Phanar and Patriarch Bartholomaios, then it is one style I never want to hear. It was sad enough that there was a Pope in an Orthodox Liturgy, but the choir that sang was HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE! A group of OLD men with weak, terrible voices, who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket!
congratulation for your clip with Lykourgos Angelopoulos. can u help me to get the full version ? i've searched everywere. It's very important to me as a psaltiki lover and singer.
Patriarchal style is not the only traditional practice of byzantine music. There are many ways one can interpret the music; and Simon Karas has a very interesting method of understanding byzantine music.
Those dealing with the "theory" of "Simon Karas" are PROTOTYPES of FALTSO "psaltic" singing= isochronous temporal divisions, Occidental tone and quarter tone intervals ("elxeis"), RETARDED trills, (= pathognomonic "seal" of the Simon Karas "hyphos").
Albeit, the choir is well co-ordinated.
It's time that people TRULY KNOWLEDGEABLE of our psaltic tradition speak out AGAINST the TOTAL Psaltic IDIOSYNCRASY of Simon Karas and his "students" such as LA.
Lykourgos Angelopoulos is a very serious chanter and performer. He promotes a serious ethos among his students, not only in regards to the music but also in regards to the Typikon.
1st) In Byzantine music we have a tradition which, since Byzantine age, was kept pure mainly in the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Archontes
2nd) I agree that Byzanine Music is not static, as all the other arts has different expressions through time. But the term "expression" or style you mentioned, is totaly different comparing to "tradition"
3rd) I think that it will be good for all of us with obligation on Byz. Music if we try to talk more polite, especially with people we don't know...
I believe that you, kyrie tsagaraki, are the one who has made the abrasive comments.
Lycourgo is a wonderful singer and a wonderful human being. Have you met him? Please discuss your disrespect with him personally. I'd rather hear my criticisms personally rather than falsely authoritative statements made to others who are not expers like Lycourgo.
You can see above my only comment on the video and my response to GeorgeEconomou. If you read them carefully and you can still spot anything disrespectful or abrasive for Mr. Angelopoulos in person, as you mentioned in your reply, please tell me to be instantly removed! But, also, please let me have my opinion on what is tradition in Byzantine Music, either if it is different from yours.
Don't say silly things! Who are you to judge what is Byzantine and what is not? There are many styles in the Byzantine music and above all is not static!
Mr Aggelopoulos maybe is the best byzantine music teacher in Greece - however I partially disagree with his chant form (his style is not originally patriarchal). In additional his choir is great.
J'ai eu d'occasion connaitre Lykourgos Angelopoulos..

Mr Aggelopoulos, great "psaltis" (cantor) and Choir conductor, is maybe the most recogniseble pupil of our teacher, late Simon Karas.
Any conflict related to different chanting styles is not relevant.
Music is made to calm and educate! At the same time music is a science and must be considered as such.
Thank you for uploading greek, arab and roman religius music of the midle ages, especially of that quality.

@cinefurhelga You are wellcome!
I have worked with L. Angelopoulos and his aptitude is extraordinary!
In Greece we lack proffesionalism! We do not face our composers with due respect!
Mr. Angelopoulos is an exeption!

Despite his excellent technical knowledge, his chanting has nothing to do with the original, traditional byzantine music...
