Oh no! Not the farkin duck again! fuck the duck it's a blade off test as others have already mentioned. This duck is getting some serious mileage, I mean how many times can you keep using the same duck!!!!
hope you know what you are talking about.... even a human carcass won't create an explosion violent as this.... it will just go through the back of the engine... how much more a duck?
I love how despite everyone's comments, the author still refuses to change the title of the video. Maybe they're just trying to get a lot of video hits by making something like a duck vs engine seem more catastrophic and crazy than it really is.
this is ACTUALLY a test to determine whether a blade, if detached, would leave the engine casing. if the blade broke free, the engine would fail the test.
You cannot be too careful. In Australia people sneak up on parked airliners and place explosives on the blades when nobody is looking all of the time. You would be surprised how often it happens without anybody noticing....
Hey thats the engine Trent 900. Its being used for the A380 and yah it was just explosives planted on the orange Fan. They did the test to show if a blade fails dramatically the engines cowling can keep deadly debris from flying everywhere and causing further damage to the aircraft
@snowman4839 I'm assuming it would reduce air intake. And plus the birds would then just get stuck on them anyways and would create even less intake, reducing power.
@snowman4839 I`m not sure either but I assume that it would have a negative effect because it would be distorting the intake airflow and also create too much drag. Seems like screens could really restrict the plane when maximum power would be needed for take-off and emergency situations.
well i know some russian planes had mesh grills to avoid taking rubbish into the engines such as the mig29 and 2u27 families. They even went so far as to put intake gills ontop of the wingroot extensions and use those for rough field taeoffs where mud and dirt could be ingested.
However that sort of thing isnt really viable on an airliner. But who knows maybe one day they'll figure out a way
this is absolutely NOT a bird carcass test.. the sole fan blade marked with the flourescent paint has explosives on it. thats what was detonated. it simulates a "blade-off" instance, testing the fan shrouds structrual integrity.... definitely not a bird test.
Nope, they certify the engine with frosen turkeys. However, there is not guarante that the engine will operate indifferently after a duck hit. But a disintegration of the compressor is out of the question. Watch the coloured blade. A typical sign of that this is an arranged dynamite charge on ONE blade. And where is the duck in this sequence????
That is an explosion test. Not the Bird Strike test.

This test is called a blade out, performed mostly to test the kevlar jacket that protects the aircraft from an encasement breach.

if it were a duck it would have been ripped to shreds hardly leaving a mark on the engine

did the duck survive?

it was no duck, they released one of the fan blades of the engine to test its stability.

wonder why they don't put screens in front of the engine for things like birds

You bird brain!
This is NOT a test with a duck. It is a test (small explosives) demonstrating the effects of a broken/damaged blade - note the single coloured blade!

Dynamite 1 - Engine 0.
This is a test that shows the consequences from when a turbine blade gets loose. No duck here, but dynamite.
viggenxfiles 3 years ago
I would think a turbine blade could get loose from hitting a duck at 300 mph.
