1000 Hz is the "test" frequency in the television broadcast industry.
For example, say a TV truck is televising a football game. Before the game starts the truck sends out a 1000 Hz audio signal to master control. Master control receives the signal and verifies that it is 1000 Hz. If not, then the audio equipment is adjusted.
Usually the 1 kHz signal is sent along with SMPTE color bars signal to calibrate video. Both together are called "bars and tone."
