@thescatterbrain123 The synth is set up so that there are 2 patches playing the same sound. One going to the left output one to the right, so I fade the second output in at a certain point. The sequencer records step by step and then loops.
@rondroyd EMS built them to go with the VCS3. Usually in wood but a few were built in the perspex cases. Basically a Synthi AKS sequencer in a box but with much better interfacing.
dont add a 909 or an 808 as it will just turn into awfull 90s cliche house music(see comment below) this is proper 1970s electronic music as it should be,very cool.
fantastic sounding vids! all of them :) ... BUT THEY NEED A 909 BASS DRUM !!! everytime I listented to one of your 'jams' I wanted to add them myself :P
Bloody hell mate, how do you keep your inspiration for tracks going? it must be a nightmare with so many of these synths at your disposal. You could easily lose a year just mucking about with the sounds.
Seriously, it is hard to focus sometimes, but I kind of circulate amongst the synths! some don't get used for ages and then I go for it with them for a few months..
thanks for this video. now I know what a VCS3 is. I just bought pink floyd's dark side of the moon vinyl and had no idea what david and roger were playing when it listed it.
it seems surprisingly easy to do what you're doing on these videos... i've done the same on fruity loops and reason in my studio and thought i was producing stuff that wasn't that good because it was too easy.
Excellent synth, but you can do more than make it sound like a TB303. Perhaps I'm not being fair, but there are fatter sounds that instrument is capable of producing.
Your definition of what a TB303 sounds like must be different from mine I'm afraid!
And yes I am aware that you can do more than this with it. It is just one video of me doodling. I'm not pretending this is the ultimate VCS3 sequence.
Perhaps you'd care to buy my CD and see what else I can do with my synths or post some videos yourself ;-)
the TB303 is a very nice machine, and of course can makes better and more "aggressive" bass loops than this old VCS3... but the VCS3 can produce incredibly amazing sounds, sci-fi effects and patches that a TB303 can't even imagine!
Its so rare to see both in action....Thanks so much in sharing this with the world..If only EMS would re-release the uni-seq. etc...Oh well, the synth-e sounds pretty good for the price..
In the beginning there's a familiar sound I think I heard from a Sony game or something and at 1:02 the classic C64 SID sound resurfaces. If it weren't for these guys twiddling knobs on synthesizers, we wouldn't have the classic game soundtracks.
how would you program that main rhythm? would you play it in the sequencer and then save it and loop or something else? love the eerie sequence

@buchla300 so if you were to do it note by note how would you achieve note lenghts and time signature?
thescatterbrain123 8 months ago
@thescatterbrain123 You can specify rests and you basically just count notes until you get the length required! Not very high tech

I had a Buchla 300, hence the name. I think it's now in the Audities collection.
Check my other videos for my Buchla 200..
I don't know Don, no.

best synthesizer ever (the vcs 3 and the A/AKS etc... )
clarius1973 3 years ago
It's certainly one of them. I'd quite like a Synthi 100 though ;-)
buchla300 3 years ago
the synthi 100 is a real monster, but has a thinner filter. The 18 db/oct filter of the vcs3 is far better, imho.

Also I have not seen the EMS on the side that looks like a sequencer, what is it???
It looks a little like a modified Synthi E
Do you have a Synthi 100 hiding in a corner somewhere????
Take a look at my book video, I'd like if some Buchla went in there

The EMS next to the VCS3 is a Universal Sequencer. Very rare and recently sold :-(
Lottery? Don't play it! Buy at the right time and sell at the right time!
