eric clapton is an amazing songwriter, no one debates this. However, john mayer has the leg up on him in solo originality and speed and variety! John Mayer Rules, as does EC!

...it's probably the other way around. EC redoes a lot of standard blues tracks that come from way before him. In his heyday, EC was as fast as anyone and as for variety in soloing, they're on a par. But John is only 30 ish so there's still time yet...
