In so many of the opinions about the superiority of a style over another, most people say Muay Thai is the best. "The best" referred to here is understood in this way. Suppose there are 2 exactly the same persons: same in every aspect like motivation, strength, height, weight, determination, etc.. and the only difference between them is that one learns Muay Thai and the other learns some other style. Then Muay beats all. Just look at fight scenes between Muay Thai fighters and you'll see why
Nice vid, never though you'd actually be able to use vovinam in real situations. Maybe the basics, but none of the complex stuff. I reached "Lam Dai III" and quit after realizing none of the stuff I learnt would help in a real fight. Moves such as the legs techniques 1~12 were cool, but would never work in a brawl.
@CantoOrigin actually leg attack 1-6 are the best to use, my favorite is 1 becuz its the simplest, but the most deadly, done correctly u can snap a guys knee easy.
@WIGGEDAsianDude yeh but realistically its better to spend your time and energy to practice the ones that have a higher chance of success. and I'd rather break their knee than their neck, i personally wouldn't want that on my conscience-killing somebody.
@bling6 True that, killing someone would give you a guilty conscience, but the higher sucess rate of something breaking is their neck not their knee. The knee is sturdier then the neck. Also a higher chance of success still comes with practice.
@WIGGEDAsianDude i'd have to disagree. the knee is much closer to u, therefore much more accessible than the neck. in combat both ppl stand a certain distance from each other, to use #11 u have to be up close, whereas #1 u dont have to. With the distance everytime they attack u they have to step forward, say for a punch they have to reach forward at which point u could easily do #1 to break their extended leg, or if they try to kick, u can break their back knee.
@bling6 when you say they step forward you mean they're getting closer to you right? If they throw a punch they are going to get close to make contact right? So if they threw a punch you would be able to get close to them when they step forward to attack and so you could do #11no? I agree doing #11 when they use a kick is a bit tricky. But either way #11 is a counterattack not a first attack u hv to be close , #1 is also designed as a counter attack for when they kick you catch their other knee.
@WIGGEDAsianDude basically dude ive been practicing vvn for a decade, we spar everyday in class with/ without gear against opponents of various levels, only 6-8% of the time can u even try 11, usually when u are really CLOSE within 1 feet can u even try to attempt it. Meanwhile #1 is more versatile, it can be done 3-5 ft away from the opponent, thus taking very minimal risks. i can do #1 in 50-70% of the fights. watch the vvn comp fights, they do 1,2,3,6 ect but never 11 because its too hard.
this martial art is really cool but i live in england do any of u know if there are any vovinam schools in england or in fact many at all outside of vietnam
Once again, the roundhouse kick dominates the highlight reel. Doesn't really matter the style. Karate, Muay Thai, taekwondo, Vovinam, and american kickboxing.
I agree that if you pratice Taekwondo or Karate or Wushu with the purpose of self-defense, not of competition, u may be able to use them in real lfe, But the probem is most masters of these arts now teach you how to do it well in a competition, not a real fight.
I practiced Vovinam last summer, and even it is a civilian club, the master and 2 instructors really stressed the real effectiveness of the art, and I must admit that it helps a lot in my self-defense skills.
that is true, buddy, but the point is how lethal t is. It may take Judo a few throws to kill a man, but it may take Vovinam and Muay Thai and any other non-Olympic martial art one strike to finish the opponent. You know, a chop to the neck or an elbow to the bridge of the nose or a right strike to the pit of the stomach and that's it. And that is not to mention the scissor techniques in Vovinam, which, once applied, spare the opponent no way out.
When u break someone's nose completely, he cannot breathe. Moreover, when people see their blood, they always lose morale. So if he doesn't die by the first strike, u can give him another, which must be much easier because he's lost the will to fight.
wat is vovinam exactly? i thought i heard of everything wen i saw Shuai Jiao (which it's existence already confused my brain) but now this?!?!!? where are these old styles popping up from? lol
hey um if someones in black belt in vovinam there not the highest belt..white is and this very old man has it. ONLY HIM and it took him YEARS to get it lol no i mean DECADES
I agree with you, buddy. I don't know why some Vietnamese people want to practice foreign martial arts when actually they have a very good martial art in their own country.
@o0KrimsoN0o yo, where do u live in Vietnam? Vovinam is famous mostly in the South and is getting more and more reputation in Hanoi. You should consider the art, it's worth your time.
@quanarius oh i forgot to mentioned i was born and living in Australia, but there is a vovinam center pretty close by where i live so yeah ill consider it
@quanarius i think its because its not very popular. since tkd, karate, and shaolin are probably the most popular ( i'm not sure where you're from) in the us. i didn't know there was Vietnamese martial until i actually started practicing 5 years ago.
@quanarius i rather go study vo co truyen for god sake..vovinam is one of the most useless martial art out there ..all of the move that ur vovinam master teach you will most likely get u kill or beat up in real self defense
whatever this is, TKD kung fu? i like it i like how its full contact but uses good tecniques not just mindless brawling and throwing aimless punches and kicks. gr8 style of martial art
that is true, that's not Vovinam. It's extreme martial art, whose roots lie in Karate. It's just to show that a Vovinam dark blue belt can do exactly what a Karate black belt can.
Why do you think its TKD... It dosent look like TKD at all accept the roundhouse kick which every asian martial art has... TKD is very very new, this style is from vietnam and has a HUGE base in Kung fu
Watch some history about it, its cool. I dont know alot about it, but I do know it isent TKD lol
you're right, the round house kick is so typical of any martial art.
and Vovinam is not directly derive from Chinese kung fu. It is a combination of all the best techniques of Vietnamese martial arts, with a few good things of other foreign martial arts.
Of course you may argue that Vietnamese martial arts originated from Chinese kung fu. It may be true, but u should know that Vietnamese have made so many changes to them that they are no longer considered Chinese.
I don't have much faith that one strike can kill an opponent. People can take a lot of abuse and keep fighting. and a strike to the nose mostly just breaks cartilage and won't slow a tough man down.
BS breaking anyones nose will at least hurt them ALOT and make them back up, maby they wont go running away, but dont act like being big means you cant get hurt. Breaking your nose can in fact kill you depending on how you get hit, you cant strengthen your face... I dont care how big you are, if someone breaks your nose, you will think twice about charging in again...
Yeah its definatly crap seeing as science and alot of other stuff has proven it. Why would self defence classes and army guys learn that if it was a myth... It makes sense that hitting their nose upward with your palm shoves the nose bone into their brain, you cant say thats a myth, whats a myth about it??? It might not be a easy thing to do, but it will work if you can do it.
Science has not proven it. Pick up this month;'s Black Belt mag. They dispel martial arts myths and this is one of them. they asked doctors if it was possible and they said no!
I get that magazine and alot of it is just a one sided view on martial arts from guys that basically hate everything accept UFC... Im gonna have to agree with history, and some of the best self defence martial arts like Krav Maga, and MCMAP training. Even if it dosent kill you, it still hurts alot and they will back up and be hurt. Maby not dead, but it will definatly hurt them more than say if you palmed their forhead or something. Its a good move
Actually, mattm1836 is right. The bone of the nose can't penetrate the brain. At worse, the entire part of the skull will break, which won't kill the person.
Like I said, even if he dosent die, I dout someone is just gonna be like "Oh, broken nose, but it didnt penetrate my brain and kil me like you thought so im gonna still attack you" They will definatly be hurt, and think twice before attacking you again...
That actually was my point, which I already said from before. I learned that from lots of people that you can die from that, I dont know if that is true or not. No offence to you, but I still dont know what to belive about this, iv heard it from lots of people both ways. But al lI know, and the only important thing is, a palm to the nose will get someone off you, and it will hurt very bad...
you can check out anatomical books about the human skull. If you punch someone in the nose and push the nasal bone back in his head, it would have to go through the maxila, lacrimal and/or frontal bone before hitting the brain.
ANYWAY, it still hurts very bad and is a good move that will break your nose reguardless. It hurts very bad and will most likely get an attacker away from you.
@phutsaulang121 : I challenge you to prove what you said. Can you define the term "the best"? Does it mean the best is beauty? If so, then I agree with you that Vovinam is the best in terms of beauty in demos. What about being effective? If you kick 3 times at the opponent in order to knock him out (supposing the kicks are on target), and Muay Thai needs just 1 kick to knock him out, does it mean it's the best?
well i take vovinam and from my understanding it will include form 1, fighting techniques 1-5, self defense from hugs and chokes and also on your obedience and discipline. mine is in may as well. Good luck. VOVINAM!
Vovinam is hard as hell to learn. i had teacher told that vovinam got some elbows and knees but when i started learning the forms in vovinam im head almost explode, and the stretching geez in vietnam ,vovinam everybody there was doing prefect slitp
well not all MA are easy to learn..but the thing abt vvn..if you're a beginner of course it going to hard, but if you spend a period of time with it then you'll get use to it.. Practice makes it Perfect, if you don't then you'll never going to improve :)
lol keep at it! ull get the splits i was in vovinam for 10 years n i only came close to doing the splits when i first started so ur probably better off than i am
when i was learning viet quyen dao, there was this not vietnamese guy who couldn't do the splits so my grandmaster put plastic bags over his feet so he'd slip into the splits
well, flexibility is the most basic but also the hardest and the most important step in any martial art. Once you've been able to do a whole bunch of kicking techniques. So, be patient, and train hard!
@bnguyen25 huh? what you talking about, I'm not arguing or fighting with no one ? I'm talking about how the style vovinam is, and how they teach it in Vietnam.
it starts with light blue and goes to dark blue, yellow, red, and then white. yellow is instructor level, and you earn stripes as you get better in order to get your next belt.

thats kool. who ever takes vovinam then please agree with me!
kutiekutie909 2 years ago
I agree with you, buddy. I don't know why some Vietnamese people want to practice foreign martial arts when actually they have a very good martial art in their own country.
quanarius 2 years ago 29
@quanarius i'm nearly 15, and i've never heard of vovinam until now, even though im vietnamese O_O. I even use to practice karate.
o0KrimsoN0o 1 year ago
@o0KrimsoN0o yo, where do u live in Vietnam? Vovinam is famous mostly in the South and is getting more and more reputation in Hanoi. You should consider the art, it's worth your time.
quanarius 1 year ago
@quanarius oh i forgot to mentioned i was born and living in Australia, but there is a vovinam center pretty close by where i live so yeah ill consider it
o0KrimsoN0o 1 year ago
@quanarius i think its because its not very popular. since tkd, karate, and shaolin are probably the most popular ( i'm not sure where you're from) in the us. i didn't know there was Vietnamese martial until i actually started practicing 5 years ago.
theeviltwin135 1 year ago
@quanarius i rather go study vo co truyen for god sake..vovinam is one of the most useless martial art out there ..all of the move that ur vovinam master teach you will most likely get u kill or beat up in real self defense

You're right... But Vovinam seem so hard~
TKD seemed much easier so... I kinda~~~~
Sorry~
LolitaAngel1996 1 year ago
@quanarius i think it's cuz ppl didn't know since it's rare to hear about it.
Kairadragon 1 year ago
whatever this is, TKD kung fu? i like it i like how its full contact but uses good tecniques not just mindless brawling and throwing aimless punches and kicks. gr8 style of martial art
shuriken86 2 years ago
It's because of the vests, that everybody think that this is TKD :D
WTF TKD is famous for its vests ^^, but they aren't allowed to punch with the hands to the head. Furthermore they do not have such big hand gloves...
ITF TKD are allowed to punch with the hands to the head and they use exactly those big hand gloves, but they do not carry vests, so...
it's not TKD :D
PS: Vovinam is famous for its blue Dobok/ Gi. A traditional TKD Dobok is always white. Dan's(black belt) have a black revers.
WimiBussard 2 years ago
oh oh oh...the last one performing is not vovinam at all...it looks like wushu or maybe shaolin kungfu but not vovinam
sheissshinese 2 years ago
that is true, that's not Vovinam. It's extreme martial art, whose roots lie in Karate. It's just to show that a Vovinam dark blue belt can do exactly what a Karate black belt can.
quanarius 2 years ago
This is not real vovinam!!Dont forget the roots......

what style is this mixed with? it looks like TKD and Kickboxing mixed in with good grappling??
shuriken86 2 years ago
Why do you think its TKD... It dosent look like TKD at all accept the roundhouse kick which every asian martial art has... TKD is very very new, this style is from vietnam and has a HUGE base in Kung fu
Watch some history about it, its cool. I dont know alot about it, but I do know it isent TKD lol
GuamKomudo 2 years ago 3
haha oh ma bad they have the same gear and Gi in TKD i think. haha ma bad. but hey it is a very good looking style though, its pretty cool
shuriken86 2 years ago
you're right, the round house kick is so typical of any martial art.
and Vovinam is not directly derive from Chinese kung fu.

People can take a lot of abuse and keep fighting. and a strike to the nose mostly just breaks cartilage and won't slow a tough man down.
mattm1836 2 years ago
BS breaking anyones nose will at least hurt them ALOT and make them back up, maby they wont go running away, but dont act like being big means you cant get hurt. Breaking your nose can in fact kill you depending on how you get hit, you cant strengthen your face... I dont care how big you are, if someone breaks your nose, you will think twice about charging in again...
GuamKomudo 2 years ago 2
The whole thing about breaking someone's nose and killing them is a myth. It's crap.
mattm1836 2 years ago
Yeah its definatly crap seeing as science and alot of other stuff has proven it. Why would self defence classes and army guys learn that if it was a myth... It makes sense that hitting their nose upward with your palm shoves the nose bone into their brain, you cant say thats a myth, whats a myth about it??? It might not be a easy thing to do, but it will work if you can do it.
GuamKomudo 2 years ago
Science has not proven it. Pick up this month;'s Black Belt mag. They dispel martial arts myths and this is one of them. they asked doctors if it was possible and they said no!
mattm1836 2 years ago
I get that magazine and alot of it is just a one sided view on martial arts from guys that basically hate everything accept UFC... Im gonna have to agree with history, and some of the best self defence martial arts like Krav Maga, and MCMAP training. Even if it dosent kill you, it still hurts alot and they will back up and be hurt. Maby not dead, but it will definatly hurt them more than say if you palmed their forhead or something. Its a good move
GuamKomudo 2 years ago
Actually, mattm1836 is right. The bone of the nose can't penetrate the brain. At worse, the entire part of the skull will break, which won't kill the person.
bloodloss might though
lordtains 2 years ago
Like I said, even if he dosent die, I dout someone is just gonna be like "Oh, broken nose, but it didnt penetrate my brain and kil me like you thought so im gonna still attack you" They will definatly be hurt, and think twice before attacking you again...
GuamKomudo 2 years ago
That wasn't the point.
The point was that you were wrong, but I guess you already know that so my statement was uncalled for.
lordtains 2 years ago
That actually was my point, which I already said from before. I learned that from lots of people that you can die from that, I dont know if that is true or not. No offence to you, but I still dont know what to belive about this, iv heard it from lots of people both ways. But al lI know, and the only important thing is, a palm to the nose will get someone off you, and it will hurt very bad...
GuamKomudo 2 years ago
Yeah and that's all we need to know don't you agree? :)
lordtains 2 years ago
you can check out anatomical books about the human skull. If you punch someone in the nose and push the nasal bone back in his head, it would have to go through the maxila, lacrimal and/or frontal bone before hitting the brain.
walatalalaw 1 year ago
OK I GET IT!
ANYWAY, it still hurts very bad and is a good move that will break your nose reguardless. It hurts very bad and will most likely get an attacker away from you.
GuamKomudo 1 year ago
@lordtains you for got one part it will knock you out and a lot of blood will be lost and you will be in a coma
killingspree5000 2 years ago
Isn't that exactly what I said? Read the "bloodloss might though" part.
Though the breaking of the skull is something that will not likely happen, and a broken nose won't bleed enough and won't get you into a coma.
lordtains 2 years ago
Ahh yes thats sounds like a good fighting style as long as it isnt olympis tkd
wushustuntman 2 years ago
lol yea, anything with full contact punching to the face and kicking is good though

@phutsaulang121 there is no such thing best martial art it depends how you learn it
enkhbattsenguun 1 year ago
@phutsaulang121 : I challenge you to prove what you said. Can you define the term "the best"? Does it mean the best is beauty? If so, then I agree with you that Vovinam is the best in terms of beauty in demos. What about being effective? If you kick 3 times at the opponent in order to knock him out (supposing the kicks are on target), and Muay Thai needs just 1 kick to knock him out, does it mean it's the best?

Vovinam is hard as hell to learn. i had teacher told that vovinam got some elbows and knees but when i started learning the forms in vovinam im head almost explode, and the stretching geez in vietnam ,vovinam everybody there was doing prefect slitp
hotpopcorncake 3 years ago
well not all MA are easy to learn..but the thing abt vvn..if you're a beginner of course it going to hard, but if you spend a period of time with it then you'll get use to it.. Practice makes it Perfect, if you don't then you'll never going to improve :)
HMCKhanh 3 years ago
lol keep at it! ull get the splits i was in vovinam for 10 years n i only came close to doing the splits when i first started so ur probably better off than i am
hien2b 3 years ago
yes but in Vietnam in the first level the guys there are doing prefect splits tho ,and i felt stupid going half way in Vietnam doing vovinam
hotpopcorncake 3 years ago
lol
when i was learning viet quyen dao, there was this not vietnamese guy who couldn't do the splits so my grandmaster put plastic bags over his feet so he'd slip into the splits
sjanimefreak 2 years ago
well, flexibility is the most basic but also the hardest and the most important step in any martial art. Once you've been able to do a whole bunch of kicking techniques. So, be patient, and train hard!

vovinam belt system is different.
it starts with light blue and goes to dark blue, yellow, red, and then white. yellow is instructor level, and you earn stripes as you get better in order to get your next belt.
