This game and this entire setting take a lot of ideas from eastern and Indian religious and philosphical beliefs regarding existence and reincarnation. Look at Taoism, Buddhism and Shamanism for example. They have some of the same ideas.
@Welther47 Yes, I'm running it on Win 7 64-bit right now. You'll probably have directx problems when you cast spells but it will be playable...and well worth it. Try the windower program that shoudl get rid of the spell glitches.
They should make - maybe even remake - more of these games.
I don't mind the text heavy game - it's like reading/playing a great book- as long the story is good and the text is in the middle. (NW had it up in the corner)
I'm a huge Icewind Dale fan, and just found out this exists whilest cruising through Wikipedia. I'm giddy with glee and am going to find this game. I. Will. Find, This. Game.
I loved playing this game when I was little, the lights cut off and a heavy blanket draped over the window so that no light would shine through. Often scared the piss out of me! A great, yet tragic story with beautiful art. Some of the puzzles and quests though really made me wanna pull me hair out.
Developers only design what sells nowadays, regardless of how brilliant it is. Since there's a push to have the best graphics on the block, that means less time (and less disc space) in development for other things like gameplay, story, soundtrack and the like. Also, don't forget about how consoles have taken over. Consoles have a lot of limitations that PC's don't...even still. Eye candy eats up resources, so the better your game looks the smaller and less interactive your game world can be.
@Iconoclast12100 You have to remember that in the mid 90's games were brought to market for a couple million dollars, so you could sell 200,000 copies and break even. That meant you could cater for niche markets of myabe a million people. Now we have games costing 30 million dollars and have to sell 3 million just to break even, so they have to go after ALL the market. This leads to bland shallow games and sales decline leading to 90% of all games not making a profit. Something has to change.
@drchoas2000 so true! Played this game for hours solving puzzles and stuff and its a quite difficult game but damn its a beauty. I like the fact that its so huge. Its not like do this and that and well your done. Its Pretty long in my eyes.
anyone know if it works on windows 7? i'd like to get it, but i don't want to splurge $50 on an old game (can't believe they haven't knocked down the price after all these years) that might not run on my comp...
call me an oldfag. but i play computer games since 1985 and THIS game has the best story i have ever encountered in a game, its not just a game this is ART
@TheSpyChecker you found JE story better than PS:T? I agree it was the only good thing about the game but it has nothing on PST story/plot/character wise
@drchaos2000 You are an oldfag. (Just because you told me to call you that) but I agree. It's just something way more impressive than the relatively uninteresting stuff we get these days.
@yararu well today, most games focus on sales, and that's about it. kids have very little talent these days, (on average, obviously) and most play things in easy mode, or auto aim, or other pointless features designed for the handicapped mentally..
would be great if more great games like the classics were made.
@nejiharuno i'm not one for playstation games to be honest, and you mean you can play games NOT on the hardest difficulty first time round? woah ... i never actaully do play on anything aside hard (except UT, but that's a different story). but thanks anyway, i have reasonably enough (156 ;[ yeah, i'm broke now) games to play through before i need to buy any more new ones.
Yeah, that game is hard enough on normal difficulty. Hell on Hard, can't run away from enemies and higher chance of critical from them too, which give either side another chance to attack as well (Imagine my shock when I died the very first battle in hard mode because of that). I don't play few games on Hard mode on the first time, switching over to normal so I can get used to the system.
@drchaos2000 I agree. I am an RPG gamer(both computer and real life) from the 80's also, and this game is gorgeous. If you are not one for dialogue tho, you won't enjoy it.
BioWare, a development team who were within Black Isle, developed the four Baldur's Gate titles, and would go on to do Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
Members of Black Isle would form Troika Games and Obsidian Entertainment - Troika made Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, as well as The Temple of Elemental Evil.
Obsidian made Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2, and are currently developing Fallout: New Vegas and a new RPG based on The Wheel of Time.
This game is using the Infinity Engine same as the Baldur's Gate games. However, it is not set in Forgotten Realms, it is set in another AD&D setting called Planescape.
Man I never played this game because the trailer they packed with TOTSC just showed the cinematic sequences but no gameplay so I assumed it sucked. That's a shame. Ten years later I wonder if I can find it anywhere.
Will there ever be a game like Planescape:Torment, again? It almost seems impossible to achieve such level of complexity of dialog and choice-system where so much of the work has to be done on 3D models and 100% complete voiceovers. Maybe some day.
They wouldn't bother doing anything like this again - The gamers nowadays are all "couch-gamers" and could never appreciate a work of art like Torment.
Not only couch gamers. The younger gamers have a short attention span, lack patience and demand immediate gratification. Also, they can't take challenges, solve puzzles. Everything is dumbed down.
@papalolita I'm 17.. I enjoyed this game, and baldurs gate 1 - 2 to DEATH. And I've played them for about 5 years.. Shadows of amn is in my opinion the best game ever made. You shouldn't judge everyone like that. Most people are stupid, it's just to accept. I like this game because of its deep story, it's like an interactive book... I just wish they would make more masterpieces like this..
@K4inan I'm the exact same way. Most gamers of our generation think that if the graphics aren't realistic and you ever go 5 seconds without killing someone, it sucks. That's why I mostly stick to older RPGs that make you think even after you're done playing, like Fallout 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and Planescape: Torment, as well as some very artistic horror games like Sanitarium and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. All of these Call of Duty kids couldn't even play these games for 5 minutes.
@papalolita It's not their fault i think, it's because of the world we live nowadays, you see a lot things, yet you do nothing 'cause there's too much input going on. Im with ya on this, before i play something that draws you in, i tend to turn off my phone, and "exile" anyone on the house :D
the KotOR games, especially the sequel, were very much in the spirit of Planescape: Torment. give them a try if you haven't. the second one was written by the same guy who wrote this game

Fallout 2 ( not 3 ) was really hard to get into when I first bought in 2009( Yeah , 2009 ).
I could not even make it out of the first cave and gave up.
I gave it another shot and as soon I know how the skills , combat and controls work , it was a very entertaining game to play.
Still could not complete it XD , many things were not obvious and always took me a few hours to complete one quest.
I think the same could be said about this game.
