Scooter led off the video I was lucky enough to see him in the press box when he did Yankee games on WPIX TV he also worked with Bill White, Lou Pinellia, Reggie, and Greg Gumble. Those fun days.
I been to Fenway Park probaly about fifty times in my life.I love it there and had been to Yankee stadium twice and it had that certain feel the same as Fenway Park but the first time I went to Yankee stadium it was a warm September day and you can smell the grass(from the field). The first Yankee player that came to mind was Mickey Mantle
That was good to see. No standing at home watching go, no bat bat flip, no hamming around the bases. As soon as he hit that ball he ran hard out of the box with his head down and only slowed up a little as he rounded second. It took about 17 seconds for him to round the bases (360 feet) - that's a good brisk home run trot. I'll never respect an a-hole like Barroid Bonds* who did not respect the game anything at all like the Mick did.
if he took care of himself , didnt drink, stayed in shape he could have been the top 3 ballplayer ever to play the game. In 61 he wa sliving with maris, who watched over him and he kept in shape that season and look what he did he hit 54 homers. Only to be injured at the end of the season he could have hit 60.
@ruffzspree thats not true, were was maris in the 50s mantle ruled baseball then with out maris dont be fooled by what you see in movies or books.....Maris and all of baseball drank but mick was the most popular so he got all the press..
they say that mickey would run around the bases very quickly with his dead down because he was embarrassed that his homerun had 'showed up' the pitcher, so he didnt want to give the pitcher any more grief
no batting gloves, no sports science tricks, no technology to study ur swing, no special club chefs to fix you the best protein shakes, no 5hr energy or red bulls, no roids or hgh, this was fucking baseball!!!
If they have this much of that game on film then you'd think that they would have all of the game. So, where is it? Why just archive a half inning or so?
Do you notice how restrained Mel Allen's call was? It's the 7th game of the World Series and Mantle's shot put the Yankees ahead. Allen was the Yankee announcer. Today some lunatic announcer would be screaming his head off as if this were the Second Coming. But in the 50's announcers were content to let the game provide the thrills and comment in a level headed manner on the action. I miss that style of broadcasting.
Note also Mickey's tremendous bat speed. We all know of his great power - this coupled with his great bat speed is what enabled him to get all those homeruns. What a player!!
No, they just don't make them like they used to. How I miss those great days of baseball.
In the same telecast, earlier in the game, Mickey grounded out, and the camera cut to a shot from the third base side, looking straight down the right field foul line.
You get to see Mickey EXPLODE down the line, and despite hitting a routine grounder, he's barely out. Not only great power, but absolutely explosive speed.
A man hits a home run in the 6th inning of the 7th game of the World Series and puts his team ahead, and he puts his head down and runs around the bases.
On the other hand, next season someone will hit a meaningless home run in a meaningless game, and will skip out of the batter's box, pound his chest, point to the sky as he crosses the plate, and execute a secret-society handshake with the next batter before dancing to the dugout. OK, that's an exaggeration, but not by much.
Teddy Ballgame always said that there were only 2 Hitters that when they hit Home Runs, sounded like a " Cherry Bomb exploding"; The Mick and Double X, Jimmy Foxx ! I am a HUGE lifetime Red Sox fanatic but am still in awe of the tremendous talent of #7 ; many long time, hardened Scouts insisted that Mantle was simply the greatest 5 Tool Player in the History of Baseball ! Hard to argue with them... he was tremendous!
did anyone else notice that the Mick was almost on second base when the announcer said that ball is gone. Todays players jog to first when they "think" the ball might be a homer
I was thinking the same thing. "Hes at second like he is running it out." Todays players would be safe at first half the time if they legged them out. Go Yankees!!!
can u imagine if he stood and watched that ball go out after he hit........ i cant

536 home runs playing with injuries 18 years. If Mantle had never gotten hurt, he might have been the greatest ballplayer of all time.

Ahh. Feels good to see a homer from someone besides a 250lb player who cant run to second. Its sad to see the good Age of ball gone forever.
