ok so im about to move and wen i do im gonna get hermit crabs i waz just wondering if u could mix a couple of store bought hermit crab food together ( like a salad...?) will it affect the crab??? PLZ ANSWER ASAP 

Remember, hermit crabs are harvested from the wild, so being taken from their normal scavenger diet of fresh foods vegetables, and dead animals, and being fed "formulated pellets" that have harmful substances in them is not good.

Most of the commercial hermit crab foods have copper sulfate or other harmful preservatives in them, some are mutual with the chemicals in pesticides as well. The best diet for a crab is natural foods. Fruits, vegetables, proteins, are the best to offer. Calcium source is a must as well. Crushed or scraped cuttlebone, or oyster shells are good sources of calcium.

I get a bit upset at how little pet stores actually know about hermit crab care. Even I know more about it just from google! By now people should know hermit crabs are exotic pets that need special care and they are not cost effective. For a low maintenance low cost pet I'd recommend beta's. Still I hope people take the time to learn proper pet care. And purple pincher crabs that are commonly sold are now endangered in the wild. I hope people get that message.

Everything was right, and they had plenty to climb on; night or day, they just sat around. The day I put them in tank about that same size, they ran around like mad men!

@y0od2x You can just about feed your hermit crab anything. DO NOT give them dairy food. And I wouldn't suggest spicey stuff either. Be rezanable (how ever you spell that) with it. I like to give my hermit crabs lettice and fresh fruits. They just love it :) And you can see how much they ate by looking at the food. You see parts dug out in them lol. And make sure you take the food out after a day and put new stuff in, just like you do with the water in there bowl.

You know what I wonder? How do hermit crabs react to dairy foods? I have yet to hear anyone try it or talk about it. From a completely nutritious stand point, I imagine the calcium from a dairy product would be very healthy for them. However you would definitely have to make sure it doesn't have any preservatives in it first.

First off, any hermit crab food is not fine. Preservatives can kill a hermit. Second off, fruits and veggies are great for hermits as are they for us.

The hermit crab food with the blue lid in this video has garlic and onion powder. Two things that are unsafe for crabs! It also contains many preservatives and chemicals that nothing should ever eat. Do your crabs a favor and feed natural foods. They like it better and it's way better for them.

I don't feed my crabs with the commercial food unless I'm out of town for two days. My crabs hardly eat the pellets. Electra my eldest, that I had for over 5 years and she is 16 years old and counting. Natural food I find makes crabs more active and healthier. I have never seen a crab drag and hide pellets like they do with their favorite fresh food.

Actually, after many trials, it was found that hermit crabs CAN eat citrus and dairy, except for lemons. However, it can only be fed once a month. Calcium is important in a hermit crabs diet, and milk contains a lot of calcium. Some hermies love dairy and citrus. It's fine as long as you don't feed eat too often.

For the pizza crust, make sure it doens't contain salt or other spices. But it sounds like you feed them awesome food! :) Great job, cloie!

I wouldn't recomend feeding hermits all the same thing every day, I'd get atleast two diffrent kinds of food and switching between them reguarly, and honestly I would feed them more fresh foods then comercial diets, first off the comercial stuff stinks up your tank, and will make you think that one of your hermies are dead.But do feed them organic foods that have not had pesticides spraied on them, Hermits are so closely related to bugs it hurts them...

i have a hermit crab from Jamaica and he's not eating.. i bought food like the powdered one but they're kinda like grains of sand. i just got him 3 days ago and he didn't eat or drink at all so i feed him the food straight to his mouth with a tweezer. he doesn't really like the tweezer, but i still hold his arm and manage to put it in his mouth. i do the same thing with water (1 drop on each tweezer) he eats it though, but is this good for him. plzzz reply!

Often hermit crabs appear to not be eating since they eat at night and they eat very little. So don't panic unless your crab begins to seem obviously ill. Also, sometimes hermit crabs bury food in a safe place so while they're hiding during the day in whatever shelter you've provided they can munch whenever they feel like it.
