Guys, you can't compare jazz trombonists to classical trombonists. It's a completely different style, they come with different feelings, and the players have different sounds and different ways of going about playing. They're different worlds.
Heeeeeey ouwelul222. Shut up. These two are amazing. The top trombone players in the world right now. You say you don't like classical... Well where the hell do you think jj got his inspiration from??? It's different styles. Listen to any one of these two on another solo and their tone almost over passes JJ's. Am I dissing JJ? Nope. He's my hero. Just don't dis these two.
@ouwelul222 This is just a poor quality video, neither of these guys actually sound like this. Go listen to any of the videos on the side of alessi or lindberg if you want to know what they sound like. That's fine if you prefer jazz, but don't make your opinion based on this video.
I may play Trumpet but MY EARS CAN NOT HANDLE THEIR COMBINED MUSICALITY!!!!!!!! To me it doesn't matter what instrument you play as long as you make great music with it.
There are just so many amazing players out there, and many are living legends. We should just stop thinking about who's the best, and just listen, enjoy and feel good knowing there are this many outstanding trombonists out there.
And watch out for the new generation. We've already got at least 2 rising stars with Fabrice Millischer from France and Keith Dyrda from Canada (being part of the legendary Canadian Brass at age 21 is quite an achievement!)
This is true, but it's much harder to get solo recordings of them, let alone videos. I've met Keith, he's a pretty cool guy, and I'd like to see him do some solo stuff outside of canadian brass (he is certainly very talented). Yeo is actually pretty popular already, he has a few videos on here I think. Vernon is awesome, but he doesn't have much solo stuff. I have a few recordings of Jay Friedman in various ensembles, but nothing solo either.
That is my point exactly. We don't need a solo recording to compare them. Maybe some of them are not as good soloists as others. But then again, they might be better at what they do, orchestral playing, for example.
There are different roles, and different styles. There are a bunch of great players that are at the top of their art. But is there a single best trombonist? I simply don't think there is such a thing as a 'Best trombone player in the world'
And then, we are not even considering others that are in the same league. Alain Trudel? The best alto player IMO (listen to his CD Trombone Concerti, same repertoire as Lindberg's Classical Concertos). Also he has a unique tone, that some people love, and some people dislike. And then, Michel Becquet? Jorgen van Rijen? That's only for soloists, we are not talking of orchestral players. Pete Sullivan? Jay Friedman? Then, bassbones. Yeo? Vernon? Ben van Dijk?
The debate would never end. I think they are at a level where they can't be compared with each other anymore. You can like one better, but you can't say one has more skills. For me Alessi is the perfect orchestral player, Lindberg the perfect soloist, but then again, some may prefer Alessi as a soloist.
Alright. This is the stuff in my opinion.. Joeseph alessi (in my opinion but i feel like many of you would agree) is the most technical player in the world (that we can find!). his accuracy in both upper and lower registers is jaw dropping. he is built for technical pieces. i would have to say he is a better tenor trombone player.. but Christian Lindberg is a INSANE alto trombone player. his flexibility is crazy. but My bruhh super hakan is improving on alto and is comin from behind!
I think Joe Alessi would agree a gentleman named Pete Norton is in the same class. unfortunately there isn't very much documented evidence. He presently plays bass trombone with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He was previously principal with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. And his version of blue bells of scotland is staggering. He may actually have more technique than the other two.
@rickdynes There are more than just Mr. Norton. Check out the entire trombone section of the Pittsburgh Symphony - Pete Sullivan, Jim Nova, and Murray Crewe. Each among the finest in the world.
@landhunterr It is absolutely impossible to compare the two with a straight "this one is better". They both have certain things that one may play slightly better than the other, but not nearly enough to make a comparison, Give them both any solo and they will both play it pretty perfectly. Its just one plays with an American style, bright and huge. And the other is European, thick, dark tone. You may like Lindberg better, but they are equals in skill.
Are you guys seriously arguing who's better? That's jive, they're the world's best plain and simple, no one is better, they are merely different. Joe is an orchestral player, Lindberg is the world's foremost trombone soloist. Arguments as to who is better are irrelevant.
I think it would sound cool on trumpets too, but the composer wrote this piece specifically for these two giants. I would love to team up with another bone player to play this some day
You should get the music to see who has which part. (They are labeled Joe and Christian). The top voice on this recording seems to jump out really loud while the lower voice - whoever it may be at the time - gets slightly covered up. I say it's the quality of the video sound. Good observation though.

Mastodon, the best trombone player in the world was Carl Fontana....Carl eclipsed JJJohnson who pioneered the modern jazz trombone style....
I don't like 'classical trombone' whatever that is....
These guys look and sound angry, like they have something to prove!
I'm sure they're both good players, but who needs the over blowing!
Give me Carl and/or JJ any day!
