i am trying to learn this pattern i've only learnt until the twin forearm block and i'm just having trouble moving on from chon ji's movements lol my instructor is pretty cool too at teaching me but usually the seniors do that :)
I just started Taekwondo about 4-5 weeks ago 1-2 times a week for 2 hours a go and I must say Jaroslaw Suska's vidoes are perfect training material, Although at the moment I am only yellow belts Jaroslaw's videos have allowed me to practice up to green belt pattern with generally accurate movements.
Thanks Man!
Hopefully since I know my step-sparring and other technical stuff, Ill get to green belt In no time! :)
Been training for 57yrs in taekwondo and just perfected the tie-in my belt technique! I have not had a school education, girlfriend, job, dedicated myself in my bedroom from the age of 5 tie-in my whit belt! Dedication is the the key!
I have done this a few hundred times now, I have been an instructor at my dojo for quite a while, and teaching this form to the yellow belts is probally one of the easiest to teach. Just remember, Practice doesn't make perfect; sloppy practice makes sloppy work, perfect practice makes perfect work.
@Trininty3000 Different schools teach moves different ways. Depends on the type of school. He could be doing it wrong to you, but he's doing it completely correct to me.
Master Suska is fabulous, but not perfect (as I am sure he'd be the first to admit). He demonstrates one mistake (repeatedly) in this form. On each of the left hand punches, his wrist is not straight. Striking with the knuckles lifted like that is a good way to injure your hand. I've noticed this in some of his other tul, so perhaps he has had an injury that prevents proper positioning of his wrist?
@Myhstic Are you kidding me? ... I'm seriously speechless at your comment. Either you weren't taught right, or your just spouting ignorance. Suska is amazing with his forms...
Uff. In two days I have my blackbelt exam, and I'm sooo nervous. I can't remeber anything... God Bless Youtube and Suska, I can practice at home now. haha
The second low block into the high block is one movement with one exhalation of breath. I have yet to see anyone do this properly. I have notice that he never finishes where he started so maybe one or two of his stances are too long.
he did it perfectly. All you people who said he missed the starting spot he didn't. That is how it is suppost to be. So when you go back to Baro(paro)(attention) he will be on the starting spot. And that is perfect timing, and everything. You guys are jsut ignorant and can't see when someone does something awesome. Tae Kwon-Do is a great martial art, and you guys can stop disrespecting it. I go to Sundance Tae Kwon-Do, and i have the best instructor ever. I love tkd!
@pookymuffin101 Hey man I was just wondering what Sundance Taekwon-Do was? It's one of the earlier forms of Taekwon-Do, isn't it? I'm getting graded for my Blue Belt this September the 22nd; feeling confident but also quite nervous. I always watch this guy's patterns; they are wonderfully performed.
Very good! I was taught to use the lines on the floor to give u guidance! He starts centered then finishes to the right from were he started meaning his stances are not even! The lines form a perfect I shape to follow! No big deal by the way just something I was taught!
@AStranger999 Its called sine wave technique, its the use of gravity to increase the force of the body as it comes into contact with the target, its a bit like jumping onto a measuring scale
beautiful rythem, had a bit of a struggle to get back to the starting point, but still one of the best examples of movement and composure on the net, and i still have to meet a student of proper ITF TKD that hasnt used Mr. Suska's videos to help them on their journey to black belt and beyond. @taekwondoBEN Don't think I could put what you're talking about any better than what my instructor said.
My instructor has been doing the TKD school that I attend for 25 years and has only graduated 50 some black belts. However, there are schools out there that have been around for 5 years and graduated 100+ black belts. Some places just rush people through, teaching them bad forms. In return they graduate less than par black belts and have poorly taught people under black belt level.
Thanks a lot, your videos inspired me to keep training hard on Tul. Mather of fact, Dan-Gun Tul was the one which made me win the Belgium championship two weeks ago.
yeahh every sensei teaches differently, i did taekwon do up to redbelt black tag and then my sensei moved and i got put with this new one (who looked rather similar with tongue peircing and all)(which i thought was eery) and she taught us different. there thats my story lol
In my school we are taught to have a certain "stye" to our pattern. Not just to blankly rehearse them like a robot. We have a certain timing and flow to go with our patterns. The way this man is doing his pattern... It looks so... Empty. Where is the feeling or emotion? Odd...

What the heck? Seriously! I don't care what form of martial arts you are doing, you do NOT bob up and down like a piece of driftwood! He's not very good for his rank. He ought to know better. I've studied Shaolin Kung-fu and I'm a yellow belt in the Sun Soo system and both require you to stay leveled as though you had a tea cup on your head. He just spilled the tea all over his uniform.

zambokschwammkopf, everyone is taught differntly. Thing is you obviously do not train ICTF or ITF TKD and therefore are ignorantly opinionated and therefore openly disrespecting Yaroslav and General Choi! What martial art teaches that!!!!
Of itself an ok performance, but disturbing when YouTube masses oft use Mr Suska's performance as some kind of reference. Serious issues: during punch, wrists bent upwards so top knuckles won't hit first. During twin blocks, wrists bend inwards which invariably makes the blocks prone to collapse if struck hard. Mr Suska turns his head as he delivers low block, rather than looking before moving. Punches don't reach in front of his centreline. Given views, worth correcting & re=uploading.
Kata is about getting the movents into your muscle memory while at the same time learning how to transfer from one move to another, it also helps get your upper body and lower body working together which improves balance
Also it allowes you to systematically find a practical use for every move, you have to know why you do each move in the kata or tul in order to perform it properly
and also. And in my opinions forms(katas and tuls) also help you learn how to flow from one move to the next, without it being to awkward. Forms help you learn power, stances, the technique it's self. So before you start saying how pointless and useless a kata or tul is, try learning the reason we practice them in Tae Kwon Do and in other martial arts as well.
To all you idiots out there saying a "tul" or "kata" is pointless to learn, you're exactly what I called you. Idiots. The whole point of a tul or kata is to learn the moves, and be able to present them to others. It would be very boring to watch a Tae Kwon Do testing if all they did was stand there doing a punch, then doing a kick, then a punch, and so on and so on.
couldn't have said it better myself. yes they serve a very particular purpose. i train in shotokan karate, and we try to visualize an attack while performing our kata. usually these are inexperienced people making these comments, and if they train in any style, they have no respect for the fundamentals of karate. every movement means something. by the way, beautiful form with this guy. so much different from the way we move in shotokan. i've also been watching larry tatum, and some kenpo forms.
Definitely crisp form. I'm glad you guys/gals post so much TKD instructionals. I just started this form in November, and these videos are super helpful! I train BJJ usually, but took up TKD to learn solid striking techniques. I'm glad I did it, cause I'm having so much fun, and have learned so much in a short period of time, and I think videos like this are helping me out, practicing at home.
Nice video. If one isn't aware of this, his breathing sounds are "Chi" sounds and actually enhance his power and abilities to continue through his "Tul" or Pattern with full power, instead of wearing out due to using too much strength. In person one would realize the kind of Power he is exhibiting throughout his Pattern of Dan Gun. Well done...! If I may say so, sir.
Nah,not that hard,u just need to pay attention when being thought these forms and practice them and u should learn the one that u are though in less than a day(in my case)
well that helpz a bit sorta cuz im a yellow belt and ive just learnt my pattern! itz a bit weird cuz i go 2 glades taekwondo and we do it differently there! he's freaky it d help if he went through it step by step wudunt it: plz make a comment on wht ive put! lol:D

Mr Suska turns his head as he delivers low block, rather than looking before moving. Punches don't reach in front of his centreline. Given views, worth correcting & re=uploading.

arms were so loose... didn't keep his height constant...

Are you supposed to in TKD? Don't remember my saeyong-nim ever mention it, but I could just have forgotten. It's been a few years
veshkeat 2 years ago
@veshkeat, it is how I was taught, its possible for all the instructors to have different perspectives I guess
NedYahNRonnoc 2 years ago
Suppose to be loose .. when you become stiff, your performance suffers
RepPhilly215 2 years ago
@RepPhilly215, when fighting yes, that is correct, but if your loose while doing form, its not as beautiful or sharp

The dancing was a bit crap, but the rest was really beautiful :-)

Kata is about getting the movents into your muscle memory while at the same time learning how to transfer from one move to another, it also helps get your upper body and lower body working together which improves balance
tommiesmallz 2 years ago
Also it allowes you to systematically find a practical use for every move, you have to know why you do each move in the kata or tul in order to perform it properly

what are you talking about?
BlaZeSSJ 2 years ago
Whoops! I'm not sure why I said that, or what I was thinking, lol. Must have been the wrong video. He was correct.

There's no such thing =/

and also. And in my opinions forms(katas and tuls) also help you learn how to flow from one move to the next, without it being to awkward. Forms help you learn power, stances, the technique it's self. So before you start saying how pointless and useless a kata or tul is, try learning the reason we practice them in Tae Kwon Do and in other martial arts as well.
brokenshadow202 2 years ago
To all you idiots out there saying a "tul" or "kata" is pointless to learn, you're exactly what I called you. Idiots. The whole point of a tul or kata is to learn the moves, and be able to present them to others. It would be very boring to watch a Tae Kwon Do testing if all they did was stand there doing a punch, then doing a kick, then a punch, and so on and so on.
brokenshadow202 2 years ago
couldn't have said it better myself. yes they serve a very particular purpose. i train in shotokan karate, and we try to visualize an attack while performing our kata. usually these are inexperienced people making these comments, and if they train in any style, they have no respect for the fundamentals of karate. every movement means something. by the way, beautiful form with this guy. so much different from the way we move in shotokan. i've also been watching larry tatum, and some kenpo forms.

Moreover, the technique is that one does not blow up from the waist, but at the height of the breast.

i dont like wtf tuls instead of korean team ones
topohg 3 years ago
We have to learn it over the head. Not next to the head.
Robean15 3 years ago
Well, I have to learn it next to the head. I don't think my sabum is wrong.
Ankanira 3 years ago
just ask yourself, what good would it do to have it next to your head if someone is striking AT your head?
my sabum says over the head and i don't see why it shouldn't be.
Pattunka 2 years ago
You want it over the head so that the force of the blow, like a hammerfist, doesn't push your arm down enough to make contact with the skull.
Grigorim 2 years ago
No its head high
jakIIfreaks 2 years ago
i think you're right. chookyo makgi is over the head, it's in the twin forearm block that it's supposed to be slightly next to it.
Pattunka 2 years ago
It seems to me that he Jaroslaw Suska, doing more things wrong. See. Others tuly.
Robean15 2 years ago
Chookyo makgi he does wrong. I have a true?
Robean15 3 years ago
No, I think he all does right. Why do you think that his chookyo makgi is wrong?
Ankanira 3 years ago
Definitely crisp form. I'm glad you guys/gals post so much TKD instructionals. I just started this form in November, and these videos are super helpful! I train BJJ usually, but took up TKD to learn solid striking techniques. I'm glad I did it, cause I'm having so much fun, and have learned so much in a short period of time, and I think videos like this are helping me out, practicing at home.
helitack11 3 years ago

So bassicly that noise is a short sharp kiai?
razrblade12345 3 years ago
in this video he took his time to show his pattern of dan gun step by step so you can see each move how they are performed.
brianvinal1991 3 years ago
its that AND the way ITF people are taught, they are taught to release all their power at the end of every move thats sorta why he's so slow
