@frankrail - Sorry for the delay in responding. It is called a "sd card reader." I purchased it at Wal-Mart in their camera section. I just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 that has a built in SD card reader, and it works better than the USB SD card reader.
I made a video on how to convert videos with a script. Now afterwords I realize that I got to technical but you can use the WinFF software that I used in the tutorial.
The narrowing thing is the 4:3 and the 16:9 aspect ratio.
If the camera is filming with 16:9 and the video is converted to 4:3 then the picture looks compressed.
16:9 is for wide screen display.
Zoom is actually not impressive. It just looks impressive in low resolution.
You can compare the zoom if you make a moon zoom video with your best zoom. Do not use digital zoom because it decreases the quality very fast. Compare the video with other moon zoom videos here on you tube. Then you know.
@nattsurfaren - I just downloaded WinFF. However there are many variables in the settings. Can you please tell me what to set for “convert to” and “device preset?” Thanks.
Don't underestimate how much you can find on youtube. It takes some practice to have this mindset. Do a search on WinFF and you get some nice tutorials. Let me know if you still have problems and I do some effort to install and configure WinFF on my new machine.
Use SDcopy to download your videos to your computer. It flags them in widescreen like they should be. Windows has problems with the file format.

Hi, what is the official name of the device you inserted your SD card into and where can I purchase it. What should I ask for? Thanks!

@nattsurfaren - Thanks for the excellent comment. Can you tell me how I can solve the compressed problem, if it can be solved?
