  • Is this a heavier version of this dish. I like the heavier, "meatier" versions. In other words, not soupy or having lots of crunchy vegitables. I love crunchy vegetables. I am just not looking for that in this dish.

    Thanks

  • @LuvLuvJesusAlways This is not soupy at all, and, if you cook it according to instructions, it will be soft, but not mushy.

  • Hi Betty! I'm a vegetarian so I would use vegetable broth instead of the meat broth but I have yo ask you, we dont have black beans over here in the UK (Or at least any that I have found) can you tell me what kind of beans are Black beans? Is there another name for them? Thanks xx

  • @thephleblady Black beans are a distinct type of bean. If you can't find them, you may substitute kidney beans, red beans, or white beans in this recipe.

  • Betty, I want to try this and I have watched you do it several times. Here is my question. While you are cooking the ingredients I noticed what looks like a stick of butter in the rice. Is that what it is and should I add it to the rice? Thanks

  • @rockydog0 That is 1/2 stick butter that I cooked with the rice. It is optional, but makes the rice taste a little richer. Thanks for alerting me to the discrepancy!

  • looks good! Can't wait to try it.

  • Hi Betty, I love your recipe's! I was wondering, do you have a recipe for mexican style beans. Looking for something to serve with enchilada's. Thanks :)

  • @bbughtiful Actually, this recipe is probably the closest thing I have to Mexican beans--other than chili. I do have vegetarian chili.

  • i haveeaten beans and rice my whole life since i am poor and southern but never black beans so i will give this a try

  • @dragonflychainsaw I hope you enjoy the black beans!

  • This is one of my all time favourite recipes from Betty, and if you haven't tried it yet... seriously.. you have to make it. Delicious simply doesn't describe it. I make this in my household now, at least once a week and sometimes more! It's so adaptable too, I've added beef strips on occasion, or pork shoulder pieces - it quickly becomes an entire meal and it just doesn't get any better than this. The combination of herbs & spices Betty uses in this just takes it to another level. YUMMY!

  • @slmaia Thanks for your great feedback, Delia! I really appreciate it!

  • Looks great will ge making it tonight. Thanks

  • this recipe looks so good ~ could i substitute brown rice for the white, if so, do i use the same "one can rice to two cans liquid?" thanks

  • @ownhomedog Yes, you can substitute brown rice and it will be great! You can still use the ratio 1 can rice to 2 can liquid, but you may want to check the instructions on your bag of rice, and that will always be accurate for the type of rice used.

    --Betty :).

  • Betty your so pretty i love how natural you make up looks!

  • Do you think leaving the chili powder out (a few in my family can't handle spicy food of any sort) would alter the taste?

  • @Pepsicarwash Yes, it would alter the taste; it would be less spicy. It would still taste very good, and your family could eat it. The other ingredients make it very flavorful.
