  • So open are you still using this system? If so would you provide me with the dimensions of the plate the drivers are on and the four side pieces surrounding that plate that form the wave-guide?

  • @thetubeguy845

The whole size: 456mm(W) × 1030mm(H) × 280mm(D). As to the wave-guide, the right and left pieces are 1030mm high and about 200mm wide. The longer edges are cut diagonally (45 degrees). The top and bottom pieces are trapezoids and all the edges are cut diagonally (45 degrees and about 30 degrees). You should make a precise drawing of the cabinet and check the dimensions of the wave-guide pieces.

You should also think about the tweeter placement. The plate might be a better place.

  • Are all the drivers running fullrange at the same time? I like this idea a lot and may even build the same thing using Tang Band W8-1772 drivers!

  • @thetubeguy845

Yes, they are. It may possibly be better to use one or two of them as mid-high and/or mid-low range drivers with condensers and coils, though I haven't tried myself yet.

  • i prefer the 2nd larger baffle , better bass more controled mids , just like i like to setup my hifi system

  • Less echo on the second config.

  • I don't y agree that the first baffle sounds the best. The highs sound more detailed due to not having enough upper and lower mid-range. It sounds somewhat boxy to me. The 2nd baffle brings out the drums more naturally, and sounds a little overall more balanced. The 3rd baffle seems to just have less detail espeically in the mid-range while not really improving the very low bass response. A lot probably depends on the PC speakers and sound card one is listening to..

  • que marca de av es ???

  • Play California grils please;))

    And gratulaction for nice diy

  • I love this song, it reminds me of a simpler time.

  • I think the first baffle sounds the most open and lively but lacks bass and impact. The second one has more bass. I think the third baffle has the best mix of both worlds. But what do I know I'm listening to a recording on youtube but on a very nice bi-amped, active digital system. :)

  • The first baffle was the best in my opinion, The music is clearer and sounds more vibrant with more detailed highs. Very Very nice speakers by the way. May i ask what speakers were used?

  • @bvagansfan

You describe the sound of the first baffle quite precisely. The problem with the first baffle, however, is bass. The speakers are Daito Voice DS-16F (full-range driver) and Fostex FT66H (horn tweeter). They are Japanese products.

  • Wasn't a cunt hairs worth of difference between all 3 examples. Or at least one wasn't detectable through the low quality audio of a YouTube video. I think you have too much time on your hands.

  • @oooowwwwdddd

Thanks for your comment. You are honest.

  • @openbaffle3 Wow! And thank you for being so humble!

  • @oooowwwwdddd

I can hear the difference quit clearly.

p.s. how did you improve this planet with your time?

  • @oooowwwwdddd coming from someone listening on computer speakers or pieces of shit anyways. Too much time on his hands? And you took time to comment on this? You should try getting laid.

  • @david42018 Oh David, do you have a cock up your ass again? Didn't mamma teach you right?

  • One problem is that the baffles nearly intersect between channels, creating closure. There is also conflict between the vertical driver array and the disadvantage of a vertical horn. Horns should be lateral. BUT... in all 3 cases I hear "shouting". I think that the best arrangement would be with the drivers front mounted and instead of the "horn", fold the baffles back 45 degrees to make an open back direct radiator enclosure, line it with absorbent and bring the tweeters to the front.

  • I could live with both the first and second setups - the second may have been my favorite at least for this track. The first was very open.

The second baffle sorta had a harmonic or tonal rightness between the singers. The decays also sound fine on both these two.

It is a little like a linn vs harbeth argument.

I could say more but I am sticking my neck out already on this.

  • how about some ludacris ?! play GET LOW and make a video of it thanks dont blow ur woofers

  • Also some acoustical absorbed placed over the baffle to reduce shrillness as the sound reflects back onto the baffle will improve quality.

  • The problem is that if you are recording the video at 480p only, Youtube is converting the sound to something about 96 Kbps. So it is much better to record in 1080p but the best for more realistic comparsion will be if you post the recorded files in lossless format like Flac.

  • The differences are subtle. You know how tracks get released (or re-released) in the UK, US and Japan (for example), and they are remixed and sound subtlety different? That's almost what we're seeing here! 1st is more 'open', 2nd and 3rd are probably better staging. But wouldn't the 'sweet spot' move with each baffle setting? The mic seems to be in one position throughout...

  • I would go with the first setup and augment with a bass system that plays in only the lowest octaves...-6db "join" to the OBs.

  • I like your set up there.

I prefer the second baffle set up over the first because the second one to me, has a nicer attack. The first IS more open and extended, but I like the attack in the second one better. The decay is great in both the first and second.

    Great demo!

  • I'd try a full length 'phase plug' shaped out of a 4x6, or a 2x4.Just curious

  • The second baffle setup seemed to add a nice "reverb" to the sound but the first baffle setup seemed to be the most clear and direct to the listener position.

  • The bass guitar does seem to 'jump out' when played through the second set-up.

  • econd setup sounds slightly fuller in mid-bass, but i have to say that i agree with tubesandvinyl. the craftsmanship on the wood wonderful, by the way.

  • is that a picture or what??hahah LOL

  • this is nice.... know how ...regards

  • Nice sound! Exactly the same sound as my PC speakers that I'm listening to this on

  • surprisingly good sound, you got a good recording setup there!

I've got a really good idea for this kind of speakers, the baffle is a aluminum plate in a wall, isolating the back side of the cones perfectly from the listening room, and using the whole room behind as a HUGE sealed enclosure. anyone thinking this can be a good idea?

  • I like the 1st baffle best. The sound is more open because there are fewer reflections from the extended baffles in the 2nd and 3rd setups. The decay on the first hit of the drum is most pronounced in the 1st baffle. Nice video!

  • I see. You have good ears. If I play pop music only, the 1st baffle might be the best. Thanks for the comment!

  • @openbaffle3 It’s hard to tell unless you make frequency sweep with the two baffles to see which one strengthens the bass response up. Then you can look at the frequency graphs between non-baffle and the two other baffle designs.

  • @openbaffle3 Just curious,,,, what drivers are loaded into these????

  • Nice sound! In you tube, I cant judge which set-up has the best sound , but like other viewers said, I think the second one is the best. It is well- balanced sound.

  • I like the sound of the second setup. Of course I'm hearing it on my computer speakers but I think the third setup is starting to sound like a cabinet.

  • the second setup might be just right, but can't really tell in this circumstance of recorded material.. what did you choose in the end?

  • At present I'm listening with the second set-up. The third sounds a little indistinct and lacks 'openness.' It might be a bit too big for my room.
