I'm so sorry that this happened to you, it's terrible. :(
Somehow my ID card case got lost in Atlanta (a 12 hour drive from where I am), and my military ID was in it.
If you have military ID, when you renew it (or you can just go and renew it right away) tell them to not display your SSN on your card. It's safer. It will say "SSN on file."
I'm sorry to hear this happen to you. It hurts many people. I'm a Certified Identity Theft Specialist. My website DKDPPL-com has more info on how people can take a proactive step towards protecting themselves from America's Fastest Growing Crime!
I had a worse experience. I once went to get my car and it was gone. My car was towed because somebody had stolen my identity and gotten tickets in my name! I had to pay $960 to get my car out of the pound and was never reimbursed.
One of my friends is on disability due to his managers being careless & seriously injuring him ...
His SSI benefits got cut a while back ... he couldn't figure out why ...
Until he found he had to pay $2500 in back taxes for a job IN SEATTLE!
He lives in Nevada ...
