That he knew he was wrong for taking Nettie away from Celie. Like she points out to him later, that he knew she was the only somebody in the whole world who loved her, so he hid those letters to hurt her more, when really, he was just hurting himself until he did right by her.

I love the way Nettie's letters take Celie away from her world...the scene with the pots and falling rain turning into the children playing the xylophone, for example...it was great!

And the way Mr.___hid the letters underneath a loose panel...it was hidden from sight. I might be reading into this too much, but I felt like it was symbolic of the bond Nettie and Celie had as sisters...that nothing could ever separate them or the love they had for each other.
