James Moody was one of the GREAT tenor saxists and flutists, playing at a peak of performance until he passed at 85. He won many DownBeat jazz polls for his flute playing alone. His last CD "Moody 4B" won the Grammy award for jazz instrumental performance. A longtime associate of Dizzy Gillespie since the 40s, his "Last Train from Overbrook" and amazing solo on "Moody's Mood for Love" are among his best. Another great jazzman has left the bandstand for last time.
A brilliant mind and a wonderful soul has gone to rest. A terrific musician and an inspiration for us all! Long live the memories and the recordings of Mr. Moody!
James, who left us a few days ago, was the ultimate jazz musician. He was a humble, brilliant, and creative man who was a giant among sax players. I always appreciated that he had no need for a neck strap, and he PLAYED. He just PLAYED! He spoke in this tribute the truth - reflecting his essence as the most encouraging and inspiring of all the teachers I have ever known. We will miss you, Moody. Thanks for the memories.
I loved Moodys playing when I first heard it...Saw him in Amherst MA, Glad I saw him, Im saddened to learn of him having pancreatic Cancer Read about it at artsjournal do t co m slash rifftides Thanks very much for the vid Tribute
a beautiful tribute to a great musician , my brother & I use to play the old 78's before we went to school and everyone sang & scat Moody's Mood for Love.
