I think the reason this movie gets a bad wrap is because there wasn't so much action like in Aliens. I liked it because it really explored the darkness in the human soul. At least, that's what I got out of it....
I saw this in theaters when i was a kid expecting this one to be as cool as the first 2 but was let down, it did grew on me with it's directors cut but better than Resurrection
Looking at his work over the years, imagine what an awesome film we would have got if Fincher didnt have all the suits and hacks harranging him about how to direct this movie.
I admire Alien3 alot becus atleast it tried to actually end Ripley one character in the Alien universe for good, I think that was noble. And it brought bk sum of that same suspense feel from the original first Alien movie. It is a very underrated movie out of the series.
It is an underrated film. There are parts that didn't work at all (I can still remember the weird cut of a character starting a word with "Buh--" only to be cut off with another shot, and some people in the audience at the premiere going, "Buh--buh--hahahaha!").
But Fincher was just learning, and what he delivered in the good parts make this a very watchable film.
(I can still remember leaving the theater, and my friend yelling, "She dies at the end!" to the crowds waiting in line, lol)
I think this is one of the most underrated films of contemporary times. The first Alien is just impossible to match, but Aliens (the second, i mean) wasnt sooo great as everybody says. Aliens is a fine action movie, with astonishing effects, but nothing new to add to science fiction history, in terms of ideas or inventions. But the third has an amazing job in character development and in the horror part, as well as an amazing work in what refeers to suspense. I think Alien3 is better than Aliens
@MrMrEFE I agree looking bk now, as a kid ofcourse I luvd Aliens, but now I just see it as a great sci-fi actioner of its time, dont get me wrong I think Cameron is a great director, All his films r groundbreaking, but I do think hes lost abit of his magic touch lately cus sorry, Avatar I think is just way too overrated lol. Alien3 gets so much hate becus fans see it as the film that undone Cameron's work, but they forget even Cameron undid everything wot Ridley had already defined.
@RaikenXion You have a good point there, everybody loves Cameron, but no one seems to realize that Alien and Alien3 are the only films that maintain the same essence and interesting story. Aliens is a great film but it's another idea. And Resurrection... well, it's controversial. (Personally, i love it)
@MrMrEFE Yes Alien Resurrection tried sum interesting Ideas, but it didnt go all the way with them. Like here we see a different Ripley, one who has took on sum of the DNA of her once adversary. The one enemy she has spent literally centuries to eliminate for mankind, and instead Humans hav undone all her work. She lost every1 she ever cared for, it wud hav made more sense, if Ripley ended up totally giving hum on humanity in that film, and joined the Xenos, as her only true family.
@MrMrEFE I absolutely luv the scene (In Alien4) where Ripley goes in2 the nest and theres this kinda understanding, u can even call it a kinda Bonding between her ans the Xenos, they now recognize her as one of them. At this point Ripley shud hav just chose to stay with them, and fight against the humans. None of those characters really cared bout her anway, the only real friend she had in that film was the Android lol. This Ive felt was always Alien Resurrection's greatest flaw.
@RaikenXion The nest part is amazing... and the whole idea of the xenomorphs accepting her is brilliant as well. But, personally, i agree that she decided to go back with the humans, i think that that fact claims her as a character, all along the film she had this struggle between being an alien or being a human, and in the end she decided to be a human, despite all the shit we do and continue doing in the future. I see it as a optimistic idea.
@MrMrEFE Yes thats a very good point. Wrestling with her humanity, but this wud hav made way more sense to me if Ripley actually had sumthin to make her want to hang on2 that. But in the film shes brought bk and has nothing, ofcourse newt was gone, every1 and everything she ever fought and cared for. She'd even forgotten sum things, and was struggling to remember them. So this is why Ive always thought it wud hav been way more easier for Ripley to join the Xenos, but it was nice Idea.
@RaikenXion The one mistake that i cant really forgive is that shit about cloning her... you cant clone a creature with another inside. It's not like a had ever done it, but i dont think thats possible, and that makes the movie improbable from the start.
@MrMrEFE That whole Idea of them cloning her with the creature still inside, I guess comes out of the whole Idea that they managed to replicate, her from before she died, so just still with the creature inside her, and through so many failed attempts, which ultimately showed how cruel the humans can b trying to play God. I just think of it alittle like how a human can b born with it's own twin (feteus) still inside it, and this has happened to people in real life, so its abit similar.
@MrMrEFE Ive always been able to forgive that whole Idea, just the very thought of them cloning her I thought (at the time), oh here we go Hollywood just cant leave a good thing alone. I wud hav rathered they made another sequel, only about a whole load of new characters, and just left the Ripley chapter alone. But once I saw the movie, I didnt mind once I saw it trying to explore the whole new Ripley and Xeno thing, just they didnt go all the way with it lol.
@MrMrEFE If anything, Id hav rather them made that Xeno/hybrid creature look abit more human, not entirely but maybe where we wud hav alittle mix of the two. So I mean sumthin similar to the creature in that recent film "Splice." Sumthin like that wud hav been better, instead of just a empty monster, with nothing for us the audience to really Identify with it. If they cud hav done that, and where Ripley chooses to protect it, that wud hav been more interesting.
@MrMrEFE They cud hav really hav done alot more with Alien4, it cud hav even helped create a whole new trilogy, even saga to the franchise. I will admit, I dont absolutely hate Alien Resurrection, but I was disappointed that they didnt choose to explore the Ideas they had set up in the film. I mean them getting to Earth at the end means nothing really lol. Where r the Xenos? r there even anymore left in the galaxy?? the film does nothing to even hint at these questions.
Good old movies where people were dirty, unarmed and desperated, that was real and funny. Today there is always an idiot with lots of guns and sying impact frases.
Alien 3, Terminator 3, Alien Resurrection and Terminator Salvation - they all followed James Cameron masterpieces and FAILED to live up to them in ANY WAY! You can't blame these hacks for not being nearly as great as Cameron. But, you can't forgive what these dog turds did to two potentially awesome franchises.
Alien 3 was creepy as hell. killing off newt and hicks was bad but made it more depressing, which adds to the horror. that funeral scene where they throw their bodies in the furnace - one of a kind and very dramatic. Not to mention the beginning where it shows the death reports, that was just intense when you find out the died and actually see their bodies. DUDE - they killed off RIPLEY and youre worried about Newt and Hicks?
@5613n8 Yup, same with me. I've just recently watched that (144-minute) assembly cut just a little while ago. The assembly cut was all right, had some changes along with new scenes but I still admire the theaterical cut. Anyway, I still like both versions of the film and yet still one of my favorites.
