Just watched a Mr Rogers interview about early TV. He said the first time he saw TV was after college and this guy was getting hit with a pie in the face. He says he thought what a waste of a children's program. He was drawn to go into TV but to educate not throw pies. I think you need both. I loved Soupy and am better for it.
I just ordered it, only one lp left! Hope I can get the Roxio to put it on disc as well! What a great find. I was almost guessing les Brown after Elgart did not pan out!
Glad we got that settled....I have wrecked my brain and my music colelction to death...not to mention the great stuff I tried on Amazon and itunes. Sorry BusterTV1, but we both got a 'gift" thanks to TGmovier! I love coming here!
I used to stand 10' feet from him when his shows aired. It was soo much fun. He came to our LI home for a backyard BBQ that was given to select WNEW talent and crew. I was told never to tell any of my friends that Milton aka Soupy was going to be there. Fred Scott, Sandy Beck and Sonny Fox was there too. I thought they were really nice guys. All had a great time. This is when the crew and talent worked TOGETHER to create magic on LIVE TV
Found the Nightlife audio from searching Wilcox..thanks @radiokng...love the tune. I wish they would do a marathon of Soupy's old shows sometime..but seems the family or friends want his stuff to be limited..too bad for his fans.
Good bye Soupy not many of the old gang left!! Thanks to all of them for some real good times and laughs my DAD loved soupy and the boys so did I Good \Bye Soupy
I am almost certain that it is Les or Larry Elgart..the tune I'll try to research for you since I have quite a few CD's..they used LE's music quie a lot on WNEW TV for Soupy and Becker's show.
It is Les Elgart, of that I am sure. The LP I had is a bit moe cloudy. If you check out Amazon/CD Now you'll see one disc "The Great Sound of Les Elgart/ It's Delovely which I think is the one that has this song. "Trees" is the one I think it is, but not fully sure. Lots you can check out. You'll recognize the sound immediately.
@gmonet46 It's Nightlife written by Larry Wilcox. Was the NYC Tonight Show's Second Theme song, used for sign off. Might have had another name on the Elgart recording and been the same tune.
That's great, I'll check it out. Larry wilcox is a new one to me, I had about 23 Elgart LPs and sold them to some collector in South Korea of all places. I noticed that Soupy's Stuff is now gone from YT. Sad..but was fun to see. I belong to the WNEW Museum group..and sure am surprised that at least one AC from W.B. Williams never showed up. I take it you are a radio entrepeneur by your User. Thanks again.
@gmonet46 HELP! I checked the Les Elgart music on Amazon.com and it's not Trees, Ginger Snap. The sound is there, so, most likey it was Elgart, but does anyone know 100% for sure what the title of the songs is and who did it which is used on ths Corrective Surgery video? Souoy used it alot to close the show also. Thanks.
@BusterTV1 - The tune is "Night Life" written and arranged by Larry Wilcox and performed by the Skitch Henderson Tonight Show Orchestra on the recording "Skitch Tonight" on the Columbia label , catalog number CL 2367/CS 9167 recorded in 1965 . This was one of the greatest Tonight Show bands (Clark Terry in the trumpet section, Bob Haggart on bass, Bobby Rosengarden on drums)
@TGmovier Thanks so much. I just checked it out on Amazon.com that's the song allright. Skitch's version is slightly different than the one used by Soupy. Maybe Wilcox had it out also?
@BusterTV1 Just wanted to let you know that IT IS the same one. I just got it (LP) from amazon, and the 'seg" they use for sampling on amazon is later in the track, but is the very one. I am so thrilled...my copy was in excellent condition too! I have got to put it on cd. Roxio here I come.
@TGmovier Thank you, thank you, thank you for identifying that tune. It took almost 4 years, but I knew someone in YouTube land would know what it was.
If you've never seen the episode where they brought the stripper in behind the door, you haven't lived. It should be here somewhere. His real name is Milton Supman.
Well, excuuuuuse me, but he was first in Cleveland then Detroit on channel 7, WXYZ-TV. I'll guess that this is Rube Weiss, his producer. He did the voices for White Fang & Black Tooth and a lot of other voice work like "Sunday, Sunday, Motor City Speedway" and the "Call 1-800-STAY OUT" Guardian alarm spots. I remember coming home for lunch from elementary school and watching him while I ate.
Hey you East coast guys forget that we had Soupy in LA before he ventured to Metromedia in NYC...He was so popular in LA that my Dad would head home early two or three times a week so that he could sit down with me and watch Soup...Today's kids have no idea how we related to good LIVE TV back then...Such is their massive loss...Ah, so sad!
Hey, don't forget that we had Soupy in LA before you East coast guys...He was so popular I remember my Dad would be home early two or three times a week so that he could watch Soup at 5pm...We all have such fond memories because we related to his show and characters...Today kids have NO IDEA what we lived and breathed day in and day out...Ah, their massive loss...So damn sad!
Dear chengloki, Pardon me, being from the Island myself, Ch. 11 was WPIX and Ch. 5 was WNEW...I remember when Soupy told us all to go into our dad's wallets and send him the the pictures of George Washington...Soup was OK...

Yes, I agree. Give me Soupy anytime. TV today is total junk. I'm glad I'm not a child now.

tune?

Dear RSK, No..Rube Weiss didn't do the voices for Soupy's
Puppets:"White Fang & Black Tooth". Clyde Adler and later Frnak Nastasi did the voices
and manipulated the puppets on Soupy shows.
They also played alot of live characters on the shows.
143AC 3 years ago
Dear RSK,
Soupy actually began his tv career in Cincinatti..then
Cleveland,Ohio. Before he went to WXYZ TV Ch.7 in Detroit,Mi.
to do his kidult tv comedy show..and as they say..
the rest is history!
