How i forget Paco while am listing to his piece ? You are the stupidest man i ever ever know and because you insult Flamenco while you don't know ever ever what Flamenco is
As a classical-turned flamenco guitarist, I prefer Grisha's version because it follows the compas much better. Laughlin plays beautifully, but he frequently pauses on chord changes. That might just be his interpretation, but I suspect it's also to make the piece easier to play cleanly. In my opinion it loses the rhythmic drive of the piece. Still, a great player. Wonderful tone.
I just want to add that it does not always alternate, at least in this piece. For example the intro is all in 6/8. I have a score of the piece where the meter is notated incorrectly in many places. Never trust sheet music!
Cada vez que se sale del compás, me saca a mí de la canción.
Si te tienes que saltar una nota para seguir el ritmo te la saltas y en paz. Queda la música muy fea con tanto salirse del compás para tocar perfectamente todas las notas.
Nowhere does it say he's performing this in a flamenco style. This song stands up perfectly well as a classical peice, which is obviously how hes attempting to perform it, not as a flamenco peice. This song is amazing in both those styles and I think you did an amazing job with it, the speed runs dont sound forced at all, in my opinion. It fits with the rest of the performence. It would sound strange for him to go into a full 160 bpm super trebely speed run in the middle of that.
good, but still lacking the 'attack' of a flamenco guitarist in the picado, and not sufficiently fluid..shows you how classical guitarists (who think themselves more sophisicated musicians than flamencos) can't match a good flamenco guitarist in passion, attack and rhythm..still good for a classical version though
I actually have seen you perform live at St. Xavier years ago. Simply amazing. You also taught me at St. Xavier. I received 2 college credits-- your grade was gracious. I was no natural and you were very patient. But I have retained my love of classical guitar. It's great to see these videos.
I appreciate your comment. I am a classical guitarist, and I chose to perform this work because I feel that it stands up as a "classical" composition. Thanks for listening.
its true i'v been a flamenco for many years and classical guitarists are always the same with flamenco they can't hack the technical challenge, classical guitar music is beautiful but stick to what you know!
Man. Who are you fuckin' people? Where's YOU'RE Youtube videos? This piece is very technical, very difficult & I doubt Paco de Lucia composed this to have people pick eachother apart over it. Hats off to you Sir. I thought this was a wonderful version. Slowing down on picado runs could simply be a matter of interpretation. This is ART remember?! Christ, I found this to be very well articulated and moving as well. Great Job Mr. Laughlin. Ignore these High-horse sitting, know it all "critics."
Once I finish learning it, I'll post it played at the proper speed with the proper attitude. I started learning it 2 weeks ago, but I'm about 85% done with it.
I use to be a flamenco guitar teacher and your speed may not be as fast as it should be for this piece, but in a few years it may...If you go to (flamencoconnection) you will find every CD and flamenco music book in the world there...Nice job!!!
Typical classical guitarist trying to play flamenco. The most important thing is to keep the rhythm, since a dance usually accompanies it. This guy slows down alot. I give him respect for learning it, but its much more effective when played straightfoward without the classical "slowing down and speeding up" sensibility.
A great source for published guitar music is GSP - Guitar Solo Publications. They have an extensive catalogue of guitar music, classical and flamenco. They are located in San Francisco and have a good on-line store. This transcription of "Guajiras de Lucia" by Michael Hess was published in Germany. It should be obtainable from GSP. Good luck!
WOW! That is incredible. I haven'theard the flamenco version. But that was absolute bliss to listen to. I just started, but sir that was one of the most beautiful songs. When I imagine fow beautiful David must have played his harp, thats what I picture. Thank you!
hey, well played but NO, a classical guitarist definitily can't play flamenco for one reason : the rythm ... Don't play slower when it's hard, and don't play speedly when it's easier ... your technik is pretty good (really more than mine) but really, no, I can't listen ... It really misses something ... But it's really not agressive from me ... I'm sure that you are really good at playing other classical pieces more free (rythmically)... but definitely I'm really not impressed. Regards ...
Definitely a classical player. I play classical and the way the Flamenco players pick the "picado" passsages is faster and more effective than the way I do it as a classical player. Clean video none the less and would impress any crowd of non-flamenco players.
I think this piece can be played by either a flamenco or classical guitarist as long as you play it All in time and not slow down on the difficult sections thus stopping the flow of rhythm. That is very annoying. You are a great player though and would like to hear you play it all a tempo.
First of all, nice job on just getting all the notes cleanly. But, I wish you had played it at an even tempo all the way through...flamenco is very rhythmic and I felt like the flow of that piece was interrupted every you would speed up or slow down. But still, great job...
Por Dios, porque frenas la secuencia? porque fuera de tiempo? simplemente porque? porque no tocar limpio pero a tiempo? si lo escuchas suena lindo, pero no como es..de todas formas tiene merito, porque es una pieza muy linda
Good played!! But i think classical guitarists are very limited themselves to plays flamenco correctly. for example, they haven´t got "compas" , and some tecniques as "picado" "alzapua" "rasgueado" etc.
That was excellent! I wouldn't take much stock in people criticizing speed - after all, you're being compared to Paco de Lucia, ya know? Millions wish they had his frightening speed. I see you as a guitarist who values musical sensitivity over crazy circus acts anyways.
This a flamenco piece played in a classical style. It looks like the 'picados' are not 'apoyando'. This produces a 'clean' sound. The flamenco picado are more powerful. BTW, nice interpretation but I still preffer the bright and colourful sound of flamenco style =)
Strong work. This guajiras always puts a smile on my face. BTW, I find your slower interpretation just as enjoyable as the original. Thanks for sharing, cheers.

Sounds wonderful. Don't ever ever match this to flamenco pieces. This is outstanding in its own class, the classical guitar. Thanks for posting!!!
