I thought those riots started because some idiot pulled the fire alarm in scott hall, consequently banning himself from the UW system. I guess everyone "knows" someone who started it, from one story or another.
From what I heard from my dad that worked for the city at the time is that 15 cops busted up this drinking party and roughed up a bunch of students which sparked a riot and before it was said and done surrounding counties where called in and the national guard almost had to show up
I actually had a good view of the riot on Algoma Boulevard where they tipped the dumpster. I was in North Scott Hall watching from my dorm window with my friends. I noticed North Scott Hall was in the last shot with dumpster, so I was watching above the camera shot.

Halloween yes but the riot was started when 2 girls flashed a crowd and wouldn't come out and do it again. most of the damage was done by people from other campuses though and not by Madison students. the girls were charged with enticing a riot and indecent exposure.
St. Patrick's was before my time, but I have heard that it was total chaos. Fires, cars turned, dumpster races, and lots of vandalizing. So they changed the springbreak dates at UWO.
You are only seeing part of what went on. I was there. There was a huge fire in one intersection with couches and benches that were on fire. They tipped plenty of cars... The riots were more than just one day and a few 100 people. It was a few weekends in a row and 1000 plus people. They called in police from surrounding communities to help in full riot gear.
that was stupid, they all cheered when they tipped the dumpster, what is so horrible about a tipped dumpster? i live in oshkosh and i didnt even hear of that when it happend
it started from a frat keg party that got busted. when they let the fratties go they pulled every fire alam in the dorms at about 2am saturday night. 2000 drunk kids on the street....hello!
This is not why they close campus on St. Patrick's Day. Waaaaaay back in time (before I attended UWO in 1990), Oshkosh was THE place to be on St. Patrick's Day. Johnny Carson would even mention it on his show. However, the party atmosphere got to be too much for the local force to police. After that, spring break in Oshkosh always landed on St. Patrick's Day so few students would be there.
I remember this...of course I was only 9 years old, but I remember waking up because of the noise... After watching this video I now realize that I didn't miss much.
I saw this take place, but did not partake in it.
