  • French Horn all the way.

    Double?

  • Fantastic rich sound. Good going band of 2002!

  • Hey sounds cool.... But where are the singers on min. 2:40?? ;)

    regards from Germany

  • Aww... I went to high school here! I am currently in Germany doing an internship at a music festival, and one of my colleagues didn't know who Percy Grainger was. It was kind of cool that I found this recording that predated my time at BHS by about 2 years =)

  • I <3 LOW B FLAT!

  • im kinda disappointed that there was no singing, and as a fellow clarinet, i would say the clarinets could have done better on some parts, but other wise, good job to all

  • clapmoreplz

  • How many Horns did you have in your section when you played this the 1st and 3rd horn parts in this march are killer lol

  • Percy Grainger sure liked children.

    He really liked children......

  • yeeah bassoons! get it :)

  • We are playing this right now in band, fun song.

    Cornets/trumpets all the way ;)

  • Good job on the horn parts. As you probably found out this peice is one where you really need all 4 parts to be very strong and prominent. But thats pretty much the case with anything Grainger.

  • We played Children's March last year in sympho band at Hill Aud.This is deff my new fav song, and cause my dude Brando held it down on the sax solo!!

  • Yes, Pluh 1; I tend to agree with you. I have listened to these different versions of this piece, I like the version on concertbandland the best. The sound is the best and the important details come through best of all. It has become my standard in the event that I would like to listen to the piece.

Too bad there is only one version extant of the Lads of Wamphray.

  • horns 4tw

  • ohhh i play bassoon and i love this song :D

  • I'd have to agree with the euphonium comment. That was a challenging euphonium part.

  • It's all about the euphoniums. The trumpet part is easy and pales in comparison.

  • Played this in band and we sounded amazing! =)

  • We're playing this in my concert band class. I'm stuck on second trumpet :( I hate my band director for giving us this I like the way it sounds and all I'm just having trouble playing it.

  • My only regret about this song was that I played third trumpet on it. I really wish I was good enough to play first then. I am now, and we're playing the Light Cavalry Overture, but Henry Fillmore is NOT Percy Grainger...

  • i love playing this song this year

    go trumpets XD

  • playing it this year in band! ode to the first trumpets!

  • really good

  • this is my favorite band song. :-)

  • this sounds kind of sluggish

  • making love at 2:56-3:11

  • played this in boston last year

    gold and superiority award

    best song ever

    clarinets rule!

  • Used to be in love with a clarinet player... Made a dumb mistake, and got my ass kicked.

  • LOVE IT!! it reminds me of those old toon town cartoons from disney :D

  • I love this!! it´s amasterpiece!

though it might not be played perfect, but who does that anyway, i still think you kicked ass!

    keep up the good work!

    btw: trombones rule!

  • riko, don't know what's up with all the dislikes on your comments. if i were part of this band i would be grateful for the constructive criticism. it's not like s/he's saying "YOU SUCK!!!"

  • your'e an idiot. This is from 2002, the band is surely disbanded and isn't looking for criticism. It's downright rude to criticize and say that "my 30 person band played it better."

  • and there are videos here from when i was in a group that has since disbanded. just because i'm not with THAT particular group does not mean that i am not up to take the criticism on those videos so that i can further my musical ability. learn from the past. it's the only way to make yourself better. If i were part of this band i would check back regularly to see if someone noticed some bit that i could have played or expressed differently to make it sound better.

  • The ending sounded hesitant in the percussion section. Sorry if I'm overly critical, but I played this song in a thirty person band and to be honest sounded better.

  • And I can hear the french horn take breaths...unless there is just one of you...

  • As much as I like the trumpets...if I recall right, they come in just a tad bit softer. Correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't have the score in front of me...but I do have the trumpet part more or less memorized.

  • The bass clarinet part is fun in this

  • yeah i know right? i play bass clarinet in our school band. it's fun.

  • @avenged7xguitar

i know i play bass clarinet too!!!!

    YAY BASS CLARINET!!

  • Bassoon sounds nice and smooth on it's solos

I've played this many times, it never gets boring and always sounds nice, great job.

    Bassoons all way.

  • @xxporkxsodaxx As smooth as it is, I don't really think that's what was intended by Grainger. I mean, it's a march, so even under the slur there should be a bit more of a marcato length and articulation to notes. The recording from concertbandland's channel is a good example.

    Bassoons ftw

  • Yeah!! Go flutes!! My high school is playing this next year and we've been working on the music a bit this year. I love it.

  • Played this a few times in various bands during high school. I love the clarinet harmonies in the opening passage.

  • I played this song with the Manly band that just went to Japan for a tour, and its SO catchy!

It;s one of my favourite songs, and we all have great memories from playing it :)

    go flutes.

  • we played this song for fun today. yes this song DOES get sstuck in your brain!!!

    FLUTES BABY!!!

  • a mi me encanta este cancion!

    hermosisimaa.

    i love the basoon line

  • Wow, this is awesome! I played this back in 9th grade, and I played French Horn too, 1st chair. I've always remembered the main melodies, so it's awesome to hear a good arrangement of this.

Percy Granger is one crazy dude, but he makes crazy awesome music~

  • it gets stuck in your head and won't leave, we played it first semester and i still find myself humming my part haha

  • i love thiss! we jsut sight read an arrangement of it, not the original, but the first half of it was pretty much the same and the real ones longer. anyways..it was su much funn. i loved playing it p.s. im first clarinet and i told my band director im going to go home and buy it bc its so stinking cute!!

  • This is my favorite song I ever played in band. I mean, you just don't get bassoon parts like that in high school.

  • Tuba here. This is like DEF my most favorite song ive ever played. we played this in our district 7 honor band in Louisiana. Its so fun. I love the singing parts too.

  • GO FRENCH HORNS! :)

  • Hell yeah, french horn! ♥

  • Just out of curiosity, how many french horns did you have? we're playing this for our spring concert, and i'm the ONLY french horn. i've only been playing it for about a month too. i switched from flute. any suggestions from a veteran player?

  • focus on pitches i have played french horn for 5 years now and pitch has always been an important part of playing french horn but good luck with switching from flute to french horn

  • I am a third year horn and am actually performing this piece tomorrow in a band festival and tomorrow night in a concert(busy day)...It is a great piece. the big thing with this song is pitch and tone, just practice and you will do great, it is pretty easy. French horn is so much better than the flute, I am glad you switched.

  • haha hella played this is band.

one of my favorite songs ever.

totally got to be the only first trumpet, the other kid didn't show up. it was EPIC. haha.

  • I play French horn for this in a college ensemble :)

The horns sound out of tune in the violent and detatched part (you know the one I mean) and a little behind on the triplets, but otherwise it's very good. I like the dynamics.

  • you play this in college? we are playing it in high school and i agree about the violent section

  • Well, yeah. A lot of us have played this in high school and junior high. I mean, it's an easy piece of music. We're playing it for elementary school children, to get them interested in music.

  • im plain bari sax on this song this year, AND I LOVE THIS SONG!!

  • where's the soprano sax!?! you can't make a clarinet pretend to be a soprano, thats a big no-no!

  • Well, not all high schools can have soprano saxes. it's a very difficult instrument to play y'know.

  • I'm playing this in eight grade. (our honor band/wind ensemble/whatever you want to call it)

I play euphonium and I love this song for it. I've got a sweet soli at one part. I think at 0:59. Yeah.

It's not that high in my opinion. I can play a high G and high A after a lot of warming up and playing higher.

  • I'm playing this song on an upright bass in a wind ensemble. really cool song.

  • I played flute to this song once

  • YEs

    i love this song

The tenor part is sweet and fun

  • I LOVE THIS SONG WITH ALL MY HEART, THE GREATEST EVER!!! <3 It's so playful and so FUN to play, being a clarinet we got the really jumpy upbeat fun parts, I loved it so much. Well done though, you guys played it very well!

  • OMG MEMORIES. I played French Horn and my big sis was on bari sax. We loved practicing this together. She was our only bari sax and she was the best!

  • You know, that the full song is Children's March: Over the Hill and Far Away, which is an Irish reference to death. That kind of gives the song a story. I really like the singing, and I'm sad that it's not here. :( But other than that, it's really good!

  • Baritone here, awsome song. So, so high though.

  • Ahh, I just got to the end and remembered the bassoon! My friend was our only bassoonist and I just loved the ending!

  • Flute here, this is by far one of my favorites to play. It's just so fun...I played it first as a freshmen in high school, and we would play it every year just for fun. However when my band director retired, we never really played it again. We played it once and I was on french horn, so it was all new to me. Anyway, I looooovee this song.

  • If anyone was gunna put a story behind this. Whot do u rekkon it would b? I think each character definitely is a different instrument. I'm attempting to do an arrangment of this for a play at my school...very hard, but having such good music makes it easy!

  • Clarinet here!

This song was really fun to play, though a bit tricky in spots.

  • Its one of those songs that will dance around your head forever, I'm currently not sure whether I'm playing the clarinet or piano part, but they are both tricky! BTW, have you heard the US marine band perform this? It is just magnificent performance and it's currently up on the itunes site!

  • f yeah i loved this song, i played it 2 years ago as a senior hornist, i love anything grainger, its always best to find a composer that loves your instrument and play them all the time.

  • hey, great recording. im playing this in my band now and had it stuck in my head so i decided to check it out. im a french horn player too. those high a flats on the third page really suck.
