@aurielMoon it's not a very good film, but it's a much closer adaptation of LeGuin's work than that dreadful scifi live action TV movie. It's based on the Tehanu book I believe.
@snillocgromreturns yeah, I just watched it, and it was 20x better than scifi's. therru's song definitely was the highlight for me. I thought the villain's were too evil without explanation, but at least the main character wasn't a gary stu!
I have dedicated an entire hard drive to the Studio Ghibli Collection Movies and their OSTs - it is a definite mark of my respect for Miyazaki and also Hisaishi - - - <3
where can i download this songg?? or can you send me the filee??? or can you post me a link or somethingg pleaseee i really love thiss songg need itttt!!!!!! =)
i dunno, their movies seem to be becoming increasingly wandering. I mean, they don't seem to make as much sense as they used to. Ponyo was like this. actually, they were kinda like that with Whisper of the Heart too. i still like them, i just wish they had made more sense.
@Fikakillarna well it was a while since i read them all but i seem to remember that you'd have to read all of them to understand all of it, plus the story is quite a lot different from the books, but i'd have to say my favourite was probably Tehanu so i think it's the best (but it's the 4th book so i'd recommend reading the others first anyway) :)
The movie was decent to me, flaws and decent moments. Hayao didn't get along with Goro very well and didn't want Goro to direct it. Then Hayao unexpectantly went to see its premeire and wrote to Goro. "it was honest. It was good." That wasn't Hayao's final apology and expression of love for Goro. Goro's completion of a medicore (by Ghibil standards) film gave Hayao the strength to create again. Ponyo, for his son.
The ironic thing, to me, is that Studio Ghibli got where it is today by making original, groundbreaking movies. They were movies that "broke the mold". Yet over the years, they created their own mold through their success.
This movie isn't LIKE most of the Ghibli movies. It actually "broke the mold" in the way it was made, and the kinds of messages it sent. Because of that, people have been convincing themselves that it's inferior.
I think this movie is ON PAR, though it is different.
There are obviously legitimate reasons why people wouldn't like this movie. It didn't make much effort to convey the principles or follow the books it was based on. The plot is also really bizarre at times. However, I still think this movie is a masterpiece in it's own right. And I DON'T think it's inferior to the other Ghibli films tbh. I like it the way it is. It has a style to it that some people don't, for some reason, see...
I'm blabbering. This is all just my opinion. I don't REALLY know anything, this is just based on my impression of the movie. I like all the Ghibli movies I've seen, and I've never quite understood why this one is considered one of the worst. Sure, the story is a bit jumbled up. But... I felt like that was the case for some of the other movies as well.
It depresses me that people have convinced Goro not to direct again -.-

@Locke217 I agree with your thinking that this movie has a different style. When I first saw this movie, I was expecting it to leave the same impression on me as all the other Ghibli's did. However, I soon realized that it had a completely different air about it and to be honest, it kind of shocked me in an exciting way. I eventually learned to love how fantastic and so incredibly different it was. I sincerely hope Goro will continue to direct more movies despite how people reacted to the movie.
@PhaserDude374 I've never read the book. I should give it a try. I was under the impression, though, that it was trying to be too close to the book. There seemed to be a lot of discussion of world events that are left unexplained and meaningless in the context of the given plot. The time could have been spent in character building and exploring character relationships to make for a more impacting climax.
@PhaserDude374 Which book would that be exactly? I know Le Guin has written a lot, so I was just wondering if you knew which one(s) would best help me understand the movie.
@ItachiMoon17 well the film was actually based off the first 4 Earthsea books: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore and Tehanu, although the story is different i seem to remember, but it may help you get a feel to the characters a bit more ^^
@PawPants I agree, having read the original series, it seemed that the only similarities with the novel were the names. The characters were shallow and not even true to the book itself. Though the music was amazing.
this film has more of a nicer art to it, which is my way of saying that Arren looks cuter than the other guys in the other studio ghibli films, although Howl is still hot!! XDD i sound so stupid right now....
@DarkenedChaos101 ya they do, me and my sis are kinduf having a marathon thingy (over a few days) watching all the Ghibli movies we can get, gonna finish with whisper of the heart and the cat returns tommarow
@submarinesunk thx for the info ^^

Is it like the Scifi movie? Are all the books rolled into one? I know LeGuin was disappointed at how it turned out, but is it worth seeing?
