Better than what I used on this would be the Canon T2i which is dropping in price since the T3i is about to hit the market. $769 seems to be the price at both Amazon.com and B&H. Add the EF 50mm f1.8 at about $120 (looks like Canon lenses just took a bit of a price jump!) and you can do what I did in this video. Canon's current affordable offerings have full manual control over aperture, shutter, and ISO in video mode.
FWIW I sold the T1i shortly after Canon came out with the 7D. I now shoot this type of night video with either a 7D or T2i and the primary lens is a Canon EF 28mm f1.8 which gives a "normal" perspective and has excellent low light performance.
With the Nikkor lens I was using changing the aperture is as simple as turning the aperture ring. Shutter control is then somewhat possible using ND filters. ISO remains on AUTO no matter what.
The T2i has full manual in video mode if you have selected this in a menu. You can set desired aperture and shutter, then work the ISO to give desired exposure effect.
Only shutter and ISO control will be neutral density filtration. Both the 50mm F1.8 Nikkor and the Canon EF 50mm F1.8 have 52mm filter thread so what I've done is to order (from B&H) .3, .6, and .9 ND filters. These can be "stacked" to get any strength ND reduction from 1 stop to 6 stops.
No firmware upgrade is likely at this point. I think Canon considers the 7D to have provided most of the requested features.
If you could go back do you think you'd get the Panasonic GH1 or look at one of the other micro four thirds with video? I've heard a rumor that a new Rebel will be announced next week that will have selectable fps but there are way more problems with video from the T1i then just the fps- like the audio. My hope is Canon does more than just make 24 fps available. I'm waiting to see- as I'd like to get the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and it's only available at present for Canon/Nikon.
I considered the GH1 The T1i at the time offered me an affordable video capable DSLR I could use my Canon HF100's with.
For audio I already had the ZoomH2 and found it was not difficult to synch it's separately recorded stereo. The other solution would be to run a Canon HF100 with Rode SVM at the same time and replace it's video with that from the T1i leaving the HF100 audio intact.
The F1.4 Nikkors tended to have a lot of flare, and more noticeable chromatic abberration at the wider apertures. While this is true of many lenses the performance of the 50mm F1.8 was generally sharper than the F1.4 at it's wider apertures. The "speed" difference between the two is less than 1 Fstop
By the way, do you think you could have shot in this lighting with 2.8 or is 1.8 as low as you would feel comfortable with. I've heard the Nikon D5000 and the Pentax K-x are better when it comes to low light situations.
Most of it was actually stopped down to 2.8 with some at f4 and one scene at f8 (ISO was 1600), the test was for a "film noir" darker look. 1.8 gave better detail in shadows and brighter overall look had I wanted that, but also showed "blooming" in light sources I would not want when trying to build suspense.
i just got one of these camra and i cant seem to figure out how to turn down the iso on video mode and allow camera to catch more light at night any help would be great.
I know there's probably some, ISO was only 1600 and Canon typically is fairly low on noise at that level. I've viewed it on youtube with several different computers and don't see much if any noise.
Great job! What even more amazing is to play this video without the music, BIG DIFFERENCE! I intend to compare the HV30 to the new HMC40, any thoughs?

@teamkvs i know I'm having the same problem/question. I think its not possible because it might just be auto ISO but I'm not sure.
