Maria Callas - Massenet - Pleurez, mes yeux

I followed 'angalafan' suggestion and did listened over and over Felia Letvinne's "pleurez mes yeux " and found it totally ordinary; I might not be an expert of French opera but Calla's version is breath-taking and it remains my favorite so far.

a voice with a passion and emotion like no other,..(and for me to relent to that as an alto is no easy feat.) This photograph of her in particular is all at once fierce..yet beauty personified..breathtaking. Maria brought us a gift,..and mercifully we are able to still listen and savor her incomparable talent.

I worship Callas, for me it's a Godess, and when somebody critise her, I'm furiuous.

But... here, I must say that it's a really bad performance... This aria is just sublime, and she isn't far to massacre it. Anyway french music was not her thing...

I am french too... Mais en fait ça paraît assez normal que tu aimes la Callas dans l'opéra français précisément parce que tu n'es pas intéressé par le répertoire français. Elle, elle te l'a fait apprécier justement parce qu'elle en fait autre chose... Mais ce n'est pas l'art lyrique français. Elle est faite pour l'opéra italien, elle EST l'opéra italien. Ça ne colle pas avec l'art français, mais certes dans l'italien, personne ne peut l'égaler (Claudia Muzio, si, quand même).

@fan2jnrc Je ne sais pas si @512gontran est convaincu, mais j' en doute un peu. Dire qu'elle n'est pas faite pour l'opéra français est aussi impensable que dire qu'elle est faite pour l'opéra italien. Callas aurait pu chanter dans toute autre langue si elle en avait exprimé le souhait, car les mots n'ont pas de frontière pour elle. Ce qui justifierait un intérêt particulier pour l'opéra français chanté par Callas, c'est justement la façon qu'elle a de s'approprier le texte de façon magistrale.

@angalafan Le malheur c'est qu'en ce qui concerne le chant français, les mots ont des frontières, justement. Des frontières implacables. L'opéra français, c'est avant tout la diction. Un grand chanteur d'opéra français, c'est avant tout un chanteur à la diction parfaite - c'est d'ailleurs pourquoi il n'y a plus de bon interprète pour l'opéra français, puisqu'aucun chanteur ne sait plus articuler. D'autre part, ici, je suis navré, mais même vocalement, Callas n'est vraiment pas au top...

@fan2jnrc Mais la diction de Callas est escellente ! Elle a un accent, oui, elle colore les mots à sa manière, oui, et alors..! L'avez-vous entendu parler, et bien dans toutes les langues, anglais, italien, grec et français elle a la même coloration " particulière" dans la voix, que l'on retrouve tout naturellement dans son chant. Les italiens eux-mêmes lui trouvent cet accent "particulier" ! Mais sa diciton elle est parfaite.

@angalafan Vous ne connaissez apparemment pas assez la tradition du chant français pour saisir en quoi Callas n'est pas faite pour l'opéra français. Peu importe. Ce qui m'étonne toujours c'est l'absolu manque d'objectivité des fans inconditionnels. Je l'ai dit plus bas, je vénère Callas, il y a des rôles dans lesquels je ne peux entendre personne d'autre qu'elle. Mais quand elle se loupe, je l'admets. Ici, elle s'est loupée, c'est tout. Les aigus sont affreux et il y a presque des faussetés...

Mais précisément pour avoir une idée de la juste valeur des choses, écoutez plutôt sur Youtube "Pleurez mes yeux" chanté par Felia Litvinne, enregistrée en 1908... Et même dans des conditions d'enregistrement si rudimentaires, Felia Litvinne vous aidera peut-être à comprendre ce que c'est que le chant français, et pourquoi Callas n'était pas faite pour ça. Callas after 1959 was never the same Callas; It takes knowing her earlier recordings to be able to listen to these. Start with the 53 Lucia and Tosca.

Absolutely. "Fat" Callas was a peerless singer. After the weight loss she became something else: icon, star, actress, but the voice did suffer, whether is was the weight loss or not.

One remains grateful for all she was, her transformation, her courage, her art. She always astonishes.
