I had two of these in about 1980. Clyde Beatty Rocket fish, one was shaped by a guy named Steve Brom? They were fun but the tails were a bit wide. Fast boards for sure.
try driving it off of your front foot. thrusters are designed to drive off of your back foot. I was the same way when I started riding a single fin shortboard.
It's actually sort of the opposite, assuming you're talking about a thruster setup shortboard.
They're great at catching waves, and they're amazing boards if you know what you're doing. But they're a lot looser and faster than what a lot of people are used to.
They're easier for me to perform on, but if you're just starting, get a thruster or a longboard.
i am about to get a fish but i dont know whether to get a twin fin or quad setup i am about 5ft 10in but only like 130lbs i have been getting mixed responses from people any pointers?
Dude iv got a 6'1 fish 21 wide retro twin fin but i cant rip like this... my board wud just die in tiny surf like this.. is it cos this guys the man that he can surf like that or technically shud i b able to do that shit 2...? i weigh like 80kg
I'd recommend going shorter (like 4" shorter than whatever size shortboard you've used). im 65kg, about 5'9" and i ride a 5'6" in the traditional template (i ride a 6'0 shortboard).
as long as the board is thick enough to really float you well you shouldnt have any bother. performance foiled rails help too.
what used to be the song on this video... i liked watching this vid just for the song as well as the surfing. Im building my own hollow wood fish...im excited to see how its gunna ride
I've got a twin fin - 5'11 X 21, retro style, but still, I'd sink in waves like that at 102kgs (225 pounds). I wish I was 70kgs to tackle anything like these guys do. Maybe I just need a bigger board.
i have a twin fin... its absolutley awesome, im out in the line up with longboarders on those small shit days and u just pump along the small mush and snap off the lip its great..
They are quite different and require a different approach than a thruster. but I much prefer them for most of the surf I encounter in So. Cal. The Twins (from what I have heard) are quicker, but don't hold as well (in size) as a quad would. Give one a shot, it will definitely open your approach to surfing.
If you haven't surfed before, it is going to be a little more difficult, only because it will be so loose and fast. If you are able to get this board with the three fins, it will stabilize the board a little more which I believe would make it a little more user friendly for a beginner. YOu can virtually get any kind of style board (fish, etc) tailored to your ability, just add a little more foam here and there.
I wouldn't start with a fish myself. As Sprite222 says, it's too fast and too loose. It'll go all over the shop and will be harder to control. Start with a longer board (7ft+) but not too long cause large longboards are also large to control and can be a menace for others in the surf if you don't really know what you're doing. Go for a nice, stable 7'2 or so with a thruster set up.
If you guys are interested give Proctor a call. He is located up in Ventura and very knowledgeable and appraochable. I got my first shortboard from him and it was a great experience.
I have not tried a twin-fin fish, but I have ridden a quad fish or two, and they are great. Because of the volume and the wide point forward (on mine at least) they glide into waves great, and absolutely go off on point break waves, as seen in the above film.
Ahhhh another day surfing 1st point with 100 kooks from the Midwest

you should try the quad fish. We built some in the mid 90's here in Texas and they are so fast, you would never know you were riding a Texas wave.
Here's to Steve Lis and the lis fish!

are fishes a lot easier to ride than shortboards?

im 90kg and ride a 5"6 fish has a bit of thicknes and width - the smaller these boards are the better they go

see a shaper, just get him to add a bit of volume to the deck, might help, and be a lot cheaper than getting a new board :)
i wouldnt add any length, fishes ride best when they're short!

It also helps if you can surf like Jay Phillips.
