I don't think there could have been a more perfect ending. Better to leave off with the incredibly powerful moment that we know they all recognize eachother than to have the lovely song end and August be all like hey! Not only is the climatic moment over, but for the next several minutes it would be "Where have you been??", "I can't believe I didn't know you were my son!", "I didn't mean to put you up for adoption!" etc. It'd subtract from the tearjerker that is this final scene.

@MrFaulconbridge Why it was bad? Look at the conducting....the cello playing from that despicable woman.....its just PURE acting. No real playing involved. And especially that kid conducting, just mindless flailing arm movements to compensate for the fact that he is looking like he is conducting.

@xbasket12x Her cello playing is real. Not Keri Russel's, but the woman at 1:23. This is the actual New York Philharmonic that is playing. They really were featured in this movie.

@OxyTintin Actually, the New York Philharmonic was paid to have their name used, but the musicians you see in the movie were just freelancers put together for the filming in New York. They are not really the New York Philharmonic. They are also not actually playing the music you hear. The music was recorded in a studio in Hollywood by a freelance orchestra and the film's editors pieced everything together (video and audio) to make it look somewhat like a performance. Hollywood Magic!

I mean, I know that her performances were not the actual recordings used, but I just assumed that the actual orchestra was featured.

I think it was the perfect ending. The whole point of his rhapsody wasn't to end up in their arms, it was merely to lure his parents to him, to find the ones who gave him the music. The ending shows that accomplishment and nothing more and I'm glad they spared the sappy embelishments of the "reunited in each others arms".
