  • At last a film for adults whose well acted story meshes beautifully with exceptional cinematography that transforms us totally. I saw it on kookíca today. I was entranced by this film from the opening scenes to the final credits.

  • Congratulations, Rosy!

  • i saw the trailer to this at the DC APA film festival. i would love to watch this! where can i do that?

  • Congratulations Rosylyn for tackling such a difficult subject. I'm sure it took a lot of courage and a lot of love but it is a testament to how even the most strained relationships can be repaired. I hope your film gets a nice life. You deserve it.

  • Rosylyn, thank you for being courageous enough to document the hardest part of any relationship, reclaiming it. Your take on "same place, different languages" summed up nearly any dispute or coldness I have ever seen between friends, families or countries. Both you and your father's honesty made me cry. I look forward to seeing your full film and learning from your journey, both physical and emotional. Congratulations on your touching film.

  • It's confusing enough that there are such different understandings of the world in the general population. But to find incomprehensible language--figuratively or literally--in your own family really challenges your sense of self.

It's a relief to hear about someone else's struggle with this tension, and Rhee's seems a particularly difficult one. But to learn how she has pushed herself and her father to overcome it and to recapture closeness is a challenge to the rest of us.

  • hey Rosy

your film made me cry. Your father reminds me of my father. I think they express emotion perfectly in different type of silence. THE WHOLE FILM! whole film! It would be appropriate on BBC at 8pm.

  • I also think Rosy would make a great addition to the Supreme Court. Film looks so amazing, can't wait to see it!

  • such an intimate and honest portrait of family, love, expectation, and the cultural divide that happens in american families of color. can't wait to see the full length!!!

  • congratulations, rosy! we love how real this looks -- just you and your dad in these little - and big - human moments. looking forward to seeing the full-length feature.

    -david & sarah

  • Congrats Rosy. It looks terrific. You should be proud.

  • Congratulations Rosy! It's really beautiful. Woody's score is really special.

  • What he says says volumes... his openness in saying it says volumes. From these excerpts it seems like a privileged glimpse into a very tender moment in these two people's lives. And the thought that the daughter is behind the camera, the very action of making her father feel comfortable, makes it all the more engrossing. Very excited to experience the full film.

  • What a deeply moving "translation" of a father/daughter relationship. I, too, can't wait to see the entire film.

  • wonderful! makes me fell like I know the man and have experienced the same things. . .

looking forward to seeing the film!

  • Rosy, congratulations on finishing this project - I certainly enjoyed watching it!

  • note 2/2

"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain"

    John Adams

  • Congratulations Rosy. That was lovely.

You should be proud to be an artist. You are obviously very gifted. He may not see it, but your father's studies and work have permited his daughter to pursue a calling higher than the law.

    note 1/2

  • Great trailer on the interesting dynamics of a parent/child relationship. Can't wait to see the final film.

  • dope dope dope... gonna be a great flick!

  • This new film, by a brave, compassionate and talented young woman is not just about two people. It says volumes about the hope of a parent's deferred dream and of the never-ending desire to please that anyone who's craved a parent's love and approval (in other words all of us) feel.

  • Amazing - I can't wait to see the full thing!

  • wonderful! i am so curious as to what happens next!

  • heartwarming. i am so curious about what happens next.

  • Heart. Soul. Revealing. Personal. Inspiring. This is one of the best documentaries I have ever viewed. Not because it's perfectly produced or that every single editing decision was Spielbergian. In fact, its absence of perfection makes it perfection. It's real in every way revealing a daughter's struggle, a daughter's journey of discovery. I can't stop thinking about this documentary. It helps me

to understand this filmmaker's truth and in doing so, helps me to better understand my own family.

  • Very poignant - you can feel their love and desire for connection, and the hurt caused by their estrangement. It reminds me of my relationship with my own father, hard enough (and some similar issues) without the cultural gulf. I'd really like to see the whole film.

  • The tension and story that unfolds from parents projecting their ambitions to their kin is a thread that appeals and connects with most Asians. As does your father's keen fashion sensibilities. Our fathers seem to share the same taste for wild, Matisse-print ties.

  • This is so moving. Very well done!

  • Rosie,

I am absolutely moved and astounded by the beauty of your film. I cannot wait to see the entire piece.

I am so hugely proud of you!

  • I am especially drawn to the idea of actually speaking a different language than your parents. It is such an American experience and one that hasn't been deeply handled in film, making this a relevant and much needed story for our nation right now. So many of us have disappointed our parents and the courage of the reconciliation portrayed here is astounding and makes me eager to see the film and find out how it plays out. This preview is both profound and intriguing. I can't wait!

  • I really appreciate this film's nuanced and delicate handling of its subject. The nature of the narrator's relationship with her father makes it very easy to slip into melodrama. Instead, it seems like she crafts a very tender story, teasing out the humor, the lyricism, and the prose, providing a multi-faceted snapshot that is much more than angst.

  • Wow! Just from the trailer you can tell how complicated the relationship between her father and her is/was, and the journey they go on seems incredible. Looks like great filmmaking and the music is great! Way to go!
