I dont think emissions were as much of a concern back when these were new, however fuel consumption was very poor in comparison to cummins and bedford engined versions. Any TM is very rare in the UK now, a lot of the detroit variants were broken up for the engines, which were popular in marine use
The Detroits were more popular in both marine and "off-highway use" (as in Gensets/Pumps etc) because they were so high revving. Average 4-stroke Bedford/Leyland/Perkins would do maximum 3,500rpm, Detroit Diesel 2-stroke approx 6,000+ rpm, mite be wrong, just going on what I've heard.
Markthebusman, Detriot Diesel typical RPM is 2100, some 71 series were set at 2300 RPM. The screaming 53 sieres were 2800 RPM (sorry but not even close to 6000 RPM)
They fire twice as often as a four stroke, that's why they seem to run twice as fast, and if you try to run an average four stroke at thirty five hundred, you'd better stand well back!
great sound! just awsome!

I think they did make TM tractor units with 8v71 engines

I've found out that it was only the tractor units that got 8v71s, and then only the wide cab version. they are mega rare now

I'm still yet to see someone that own's a TM to put an 8V92TA in it!!!

didnt they stop putting the detroit diesels in bedford trucks because of high emissions and poor fuel consumption?

I agree, the average four stroke will be red lining around 2000-2400 rpm, and produces all its torque at typically 11-1400 rpm
