I have an SG (Epi) and although I can probably say I prefer the bassy-ness of the LP, I definitely like the sharper twang n crunch of the SG in this video more. In your older video featuring No Surprize, I can say I prefer the LP sound for the depth. Great post. Cheers.
I appreciate the comparison, but as a guitarist, I really need to ask... What's guitarists obsession with blues? Damn near every guitar video is either really crappy metal, or ridiculously overplayed blues.
Aside from my dislike of WHAT you played, I most definitely appreciate the comparison.
@CompassRose87 in terms of demoing gear, generally playing slow licks where you can hear the notes ringing out into a lightly overdriven amp is better for demonstrating the subtleties of the guitar's tone.
I take the SG for comfort own all of them. But, Every instrument eg; like an LP they all havef a distinct character of their own, You can play several LP's, SG's, ETC. Depends on you and the instrument, And, Your setup, Amp is very important I'd rather purchase a less expensive but quality guitar, And, Invest more on an Amp, pedals etc.
dude, where is the fucking clean in your video , distortion has too much compression to really hear what the guitar has to give , clean is so important , your vids you have been much better with a clean part , they sound same , and too much classic rock , you should have used different type of distortion too , with this vid the only differecne you'll notice is the body shape
@greendayrocksdonuts7 Actually in Stairway To Heaven, all of the electrics are Fenders. He used a Fender XII and a Fender Telecaster. He just played the doubleneck live so he wouldn't need to swap guitars mid-song.
for most of the stuff i play sabbath acdc a little bit of the ramones i need a lighter but still completely ballsy sound(the sg) but for the few exceptions classic rock like led zepplin (les paul) both are good guitars
Wow funny coincidence, I was in guitar center the other day and played out of a peavey classic 30 head into a marshall cab, and played the SG standard and a Les Paul standard... The SG sounded better on the Peavey IMO (even with the 490 and 498T's), but the Les Paul sounded better on this little Marshall Combo I tried (solid state). Loved both though, excellent guitars. I want to compare the 57 classics/Burstbuckers/ and 490/498T's on the SG, but there's no way
Wow, great review... Such a hard decision man... I am in a position to get one or the other right now, and I want a good one to learn on, but I love and want both in this lifetime...
i prefer sg i think it screams a bit more and tha it sounds better with solos and that is more like led zeppline and that cas i rlly likke jim but then i also rlly like metallica so it is sorta in between but 4 me sg
So what so does fucking Kevin Jonas, just because great guitar players play a certain type of guitar, that doesn't mean that it's the best guitar ever because there is no such thing, it all has to do with what fits your wants the best.
well i love gibson and fender and i love that classic sound... and besides i already installed new pups, different pickguard, modded my pots with push pull and single coil action... i was about to redo the entire bridge and tuners but i decided to keep that cuz it was already nice.... i already got money saved up for somehting metal anyways maybe a jackson, ibanez, bc rich, w.e. goes
i have a shitty sg and my friend has a amazing les paul, his les paul is better at struming by far, but when it comes down to soloing, my lil p.o.s. sg is quicker and has more attack!!! and just sounds better. sg is better at metal, and harder rock. les paul, because of its weight and sustian, is good for cassic rock
makes me reslly wana les paul. if u werent looking ud defo know which is which. sg's kool too though, im suprised how much sweeter th lp sounds, diddnt think thered b sucha difference.
The SG has more of a Mid and Treble based attack. I personally prefer the SG for that reason. Both sound great, it really is a matter of preference. Great playing by the way.
It is possible to tell the difference between the two guitars without looking...One simply has to listen very carefully...By the way, excellent playing...Cheers!!!
Good to see the comments aren't an epic battle for which is better, because it's all about preference. But i can see why people love the Les paul For its power, round tone, sustatin and smooth tone. and why people love the SGs grunt, brightness (although maple is a brighter wood covering the face of the les paul) and rawness. And the sg kills those ringing chords on overdrive. I own an SG standard, gives my AC30 more crunch. SG is my choice for my wild style but i would love to buy a les Paul
thanks for posting this. i've always been a fender guy, but i'm thinking one of these bucker guitars could add something to certain songs. les paul sounds better to me. too bad i couldn't even play a barre chord the one time i played one. used to the nice fat fender frets i guess. i'd probably have to go epiphone if i bought one though, unfortunately...
This is all just my opinion, but whilst the LP is good, I prefer the SG, just sounds a little raspier to my ears, which I like, plus it not only looks sexier but is more practical too, with LP's I find playing high up on the fretboard to feel a little unnatural where as the SG's double cutaway design makes it easier to shred up the high-end.. all in my opinion.
Warren/Mule on an SG feels a little sacreligious, but it didn't sound bad. I've been trying to find plenty of good SG vids (like yours) b/c I 'think' I want one, but I can't decide. Thanks for this post.
Besides the difference in sound, you seem to play better with the SG. Are you more comfortable with it? Do you play it more often than the LP? Your bends on the LP seem more accurate and you play cleaner.
The best thing is that you go and test them yourself in a musicshop ;) Everything sounds different. If he told ya something, there is a chance you would like it at all after having bought it :s
i gonna have to go with the les paul, just cause i play a studio model and LOVE THE SUSTAIN OF MAHOGANY!!!! seriously, you cant beat a big chunk of mahogany wood.
You put Les Paul Pickups in a SG... So the would be VERY alike... You should have let the Stock Pickups ('57 Classic & '57 Classic Plus)... Your SG sounds awesome with theses Pickups but I don't know... I would leave the Stock Pickups... Still prefere the SG!
that's true fenders cover all styles blues rock jazz etc. i like the fender when is in clean i have a fender stratocaster i love it and i also have a a epiphone les paul standard. gibsons are the perfect tone for me rock/metal and now i want to buy a gibson sg standard !!
mogascreeta - i´m not a fender hater but i prefer gibson cause have more rock tone for me and i love fender to but i play more rock style so i prefer gibson (i prefer les paul)
that's true gibsons have a much heavier rock sound. i was just saying that because it seems like some people just care more about the gibson logo being on their guitar than they do about actual tone, so they just go out and say that fenders suck. out of every gitar i have ever played, i have found that the 2 guitars that sound and play the best for my type of style are the G&L ASAT and the telecaster.
also a major fender advantage is versatility. everyone knows that fenders cover all styles
i have a 1994 telecaster with the stock pickups that i can make sound better than either of these guitars. not that i dont like gibsons, but fenders are more versatile, and that's a fact
here i can give u three ppl that use he les paul:jimmy page, zakk wylde, and slash.and i can only give 1 for sg and that is angus young!!!!!the les paul and sg are both great guitars but i like the les paul better
SG players: Eric Clapton (w/Cream), Tommy Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townsend (Who), Jack Black (School of Rock ;-). There are others, but Angus Young is the probably most prominent current player. I'm old enough to have owned 4 Les Pauls and 2 SGs... my surprised and somewhat sad conclusion, is that SGs *usually* sound better and have a broader tonality. They play clean much better than most LPs. I've been thinking about selling my (very nice) Les Paul.
i liek how the LP has a fuller sound to it and a deeper tone. buti like the sg for its raw, very rock n roll'ish sound. plus the SG has horns. but i must go with Les Paul for now. but i'd tkae the SG of anything but the lp anyday.
Strats are the best, but out of these two, the SG cause it looks cooler, and i have used one and it sounds great. Les Paul my friend also has cost him about a grand more than his SG and it can barely stand its ground to the SG.
Don't even bother trying to budge this unintelligent asshole, he doesnt know what he's saying; theres no point in trying to prove a point, because obviously he's a close-minded ignorant little boy.
Anyway. He has no opinion in music. Theyre all different and it doesnt matter what he "prefers"
Strats are one of the greatest guitars invented, just to put that out there.
I agree with GuitarMD.. They are the best at what they do.. just as Fender Strats and Tele's are best at what they do. Every guitar that is original (Ibanez/Gibson/Fender.. etc...) are best at what they do. So really, it is just on your own likes and dislikes.
I myself like both as much, I have neither owned both yet.. but am planning to get a Les Paul, and maybe later get an SG.
But, What if you like both those types of stuff, and in my opinion you would get noticed more with SG because of its Devilishly Good Looks. And if you jump around like Angus Young and Kurt Cobain. =D
It's all abour what ur looking for in a guitar and what feels more comfortable. personally i like the sg because it's lighter and it's easier to hit those high frets with it. but a lot of people like hte sustain on the les paul and the wieght feels good to them. both are great guitars.
Hmmm. I think the Les Paul and the SG are different on a lot of points. The Les Paul has a sharper tone and more bass than the SG, while the SG I think is more laid back and handles distortion better. So for like Black Sabbath, It matches his play style so well, because he plays slower and drags some of it out. But for like Slash, it matches him because he plays really fast and hard. So I think one is not better than the other, its just your opinion!
I got my 1972Gibson SG Special(cherry)when I was 18 and we,re still together. She is called Marlene - see and hear us on YouTube in the Mark Gamble Band!!
Warren Haynes fan. Cool. Why did you do the pup swap to the SG?

Don't even bother trying to budge this unintelligent asshole, he doesnt know what he's saying; theres no point in trying to prove a point, because obviously he's a close-minded ignorant little boy.
Anyway. He has no opinion in music. Theyre all different and it doesnt matter what he "prefers"
Strats are one of the greatest guitars invented, just to put that out there.

they both rock

They sound very similar, if they were in a live situation with a full band i probably woundn't be able to tell you the difference. Nice playing btw.

i think the thick sound of the LP makes the guitar have a little better sound for me than the SG
schwantz340 3 years ago
the sg sounds like it has more treble-also a little more kick
the les paul sound is thicker though
rockr226 3 years ago
Dude, same pickups... They're gonna sound almost the same! You should had let SG's '57 Hums...

Oh for the love of Pete...
There is NO better.
There is only different.
The LP is a little thicker sounding...
The SG is a little thinner sounding...
Play whichever one feels comfortable and whichever one you can make great music with.

wut for the slow stuff
Xman214 3 years ago
say i want to do some slow riffs like, blues bb king style or some reggae
Xman214 3 years ago
But, What if you like both those types of stuff, and in my opinion you would get noticed more with SG because of its Devilishly Good Looks. And if you jump around like Angus Young and Kurt Cobain. =D

kurt cobain played a strat
mogascreeta 3 years ago
He played a Jag-Stang a custom model of the Fender Jaguar and Fender Mustang combined.
Tucker6O 3 years ago
he did design the jag-stang, but later decided that he didn't like it. his PRIMARY guitar was a strat
mogascreeta 3 years ago
He recorded with many different guitars. For In Utero he used a Jaguar. On Nevermind, he used strats and Univoxs.

Kurt played and owned many guitars. He was a pawnshop freak.

for me, its really a matter of what your playing.
If your into rock, like gnr, its a les paul. But for harder stuff, like sabbath or ac/dc, its the SG.
And stage appeal. Like, the sg looks smaller than the lp, so your less likely to be noticed.
WelcomeToTheJungle31 3 years ago
how is sabbath and ac/dc harder then GnR?
travman102 3 years ago
yeah... they're pretty much similar sounds....
Niddiboy 3 years ago 2
acdc and sabbath are easier than GnR
yahhh1466 3 years ago
But they are harder sounding.
WelcomeToTheJungle31 3 years ago
just cause it sounds harder doesnt mean it is
yahhh1466 3 years ago
in my opinion, the sg is only thinner than the les paul, so it doesn't seem smaller that much
also the gnarly horns on the sg would probably draw much more attention than the Les Paul's singlecut
AcDcFAN4321 3 years ago 3
The sg @1:20 sounded real good
but overall I like the brighter sound of the LP
the main thing is to keep rocking and be glad to have a couple nice guitars :)
lookylooky2006 3 years ago 2
It's all abour what ur looking for in a guitar and what feels more comfortable. personally i like the sg because it's lighter and it's easier to hit those high frets with it. but a lot of people like hte sustain on the les paul and the wieght feels good to them. both are great guitars.
GrOUndEDtv 3 years ago 3
sg is so much worse than the les paul except for hard rock but everyone has there own opinion.
313sky 3 years ago
the sg ROCKS!!!! it's better than the les paul, simply they can't be compared
luisg877 3 years ago 4
Peacemaker1085 3 years ago
ha, I have that exact same SG and I love it.
Gibson and Jackson all the way!
Caduenas 3 years ago
With distortion, SG FTW, Les Paul without.
End of story.

man i think the humbuckers you use (burstbuckers)do not have much output, and i think in the 70s and 80s most overwound their pickups isnt that right
lordoftheriffs79 3 years ago
id have to say! the les paul, but close one!1
