this band fucking sucks. they can only play on albums. every live performance i've seen by them (and i saw them twice in a week) sounds awful. chris pennie is the only talented individual and he probably realized that which is why he left the band. they suck live, and that's that.
i thougth it was crap to before i gave one of their albums a chance and listened to it. I still lean to Sikth is way better, when it comes to this kind of music. But i actually like DEP now. Im not trying to convert you, but just give them a chance.
Music doesn't have to be "Enjoyable" for it to be considered music unless you are defining it to your own standards in which case, if that is what music is to you, this isn't music. It's sheer complexity and it's not random because they do actually know what they are playing. The time signatures jump and there are influences from tons of other genres especially shown by Chris Pennie.

Your belief that chance music (which largely function through a lack of artistic intentionality) is worthless would seem to indicate so. Suppose that any piece of music you enjoy were written entirely through chance -- would that invalidate it as music? Would you stop listening to it?
Chance music having any sort of rhythm, feeling, or ANYTHING someone could enjoy in listening to a song will never happen, so nothing "chance" will be music. But to actually answer your question, no I wouldn't stop listening to it, and it wouldn't invalidate it as music because a song by itself can't be music to begin with. It has to be performed first. If the performance is pointless, it isn't music.

Furthermore, what designates a performance as "pointless"? Your definition of what is and isn't music based on performance seems extremely arbitrary.
Read back through my response knowing that by "performed" I meant "put into an audible form". With only 500 characters to work with, I had to cut out quite a lot of what I originally wanted to say. Music has to have structure, and it has to be enjoyable. Thus, the rain isn't music, and neither is 4:33 of ambience or notes randomly being hit on a piano.
Everything has structure -- what you perceive as randomness is in fact high order complexity. You're still speaking of is intentionality, not structure. As far as what is and isn't enjoyable, I hardly think you're qualified to speak for everyone. Few people would find (for instance) the Dillinger Escape Plan enjoyable (myself excluded), so I hardly think that should be the point upon which their craft's status as music should be decided.

As much respect that I have for deep purple and Jimi Hendrix that is totally incomparable to DEP as its a totally different Era of music. this band fucking sucks. they can only play on albums. every live performance i've seen by them (and i saw them twice in a week) sounds awful. chris pennie is the only talented individual and he probably realized that which is why he left the band. they suck live, and that's that.

Music doesn't have to be "Enjoyable" for it to be considered music unless you are defining it to your own standards in which case, if that is what music is to you, this isn't music. It's sheer complexity and it's not random because they do actually know what they are playing. The time signatures jump and there are influences from tons of other genres especially shown by Chris Pennie.

Personally I think the whole "music is what you make of it! open your mind!" approach is for complete fucking retards. If you try to argue that chance music or John Cage's 4'33" (look them up before you respond) is music and tell me to open my mind, I will insist that you kill yourself for being so stupid.
That said, DEP are amazing musicians. I haven't heard much from them yet, but I'm very impressed so far.

Your belief that chance music (which largely function through a lack of artistic intentionality) is worthless would seem to indicate so. Suppose that any piece of music you enjoy were written entirely through chance -- would that invalidate it as music? Would you stop listening to it?

That's not why Cage wrote 4'33".
Chance music having any sort of rhythm, feeling, or ANYTHING someone could enjoy in listening to a song will never happen, so nothing "chance" will be music. But to actually answer your question, no I wouldn't stop listening to it, and it wouldn't invalidate it as music because a song by itself can't be music to begin with. It has to be performed first. If the performance is pointless, it isn't music.

What are your thoughts on electronic music, that it's not music (despite having musical qualities) only because it's not necessarily performed per se? Furthermore, what designates a performance as "pointless"? Your definition of what is and isn't music based on performance seems extremely arbitrary.

Read back through my response knowing that by "performed" I meant "put into an audible form". With only 500 characters to work with, I had to cut out quite a lot of what I originally wanted to say. Music has to have structure, and it has to be enjoyable. Thus, the rain isn't music, and neither is 4:33 of ambience or notes randomly being hit on a piano.

Everything has structure -- what you perceive as randomness is in fact high order complexity. You're still speaking of is intentionality, not structure. As far as what is and isn't enjoyable, I hardly think you're qualified to speak for everyone. Few people would find (for instance) the Dillinger Escape Plan enjoyable (myself excluded), so I hardly think that should be the point upon which their craft's status as music should be decided.
