I have 8 shihtzu. All are in long coat but 2. They require not only brushing, but combing out. I comb them all out 3 to 4 times a week. Only once did a couple have to be shaved down and it was only because I had gotten ill. It grew back beautifully though.
God, I can't friggen stand people who don't look after their dogs properly. Not only should they be banned from owning animals, they need a good shit kicking too.
My "favorite" customers as a groomer are the ones who bring me a super matted dog and tell me they want it fluffy. Makes me want to scream! Groomers aren't miracle workers, it makes me so unhappy to shave a dog when a customer wants it fluffy because the one thing I hear about most is "I will never go to so and so again because she shaved my dog bald!" People like to blame their own laziness on groomers, as if it's our fault that the dog hasn't been brushed in a freakin' year!
I have a bichon frise, and he's terrified of grooming b/c we made the mistake of having him groomed at a Petco where they sliced his ear and he had to get stitches. Ever since he never lets us come near him with a brush or scissors.
Sometimes we are able to comb him out enough where he is not matted but still tangled. It's not that we're lazy and don't bother, it's that he simply won't let us. Even the groomer has to sedate him at times. Not every owner of a tangled dog is neglectful
People who cant commit to brushing their dog atleast 3 times week (for long haired dogs) should not have gotten the breed. TO ALL DOG OWNERS: CONSIDER REALISTICALLY HOW MUCH TIME YOU ARE WILLING TO SPEND GROOMING YOUR PET!
Cases of neglect like this make us groomers feel like crap because we KNOW that there's nothing we can do to save the coat, and it's just a matter of time before it becomes so matted and tight that it rips chunks out of the scalp! Negligent pet parents should NEVER take a breed like this home, it's foolhardy! Sickening, and if they didn't understand that there's no way to save the coat, AWAY they would go!

It's terrible when some people buy certain breed coz is the "cutest ever"!!! and those stupid don't know THAT breed need to be brushed...
Btw, why those that people is stupid?
