All rambling aside, you make a good point. Here in Denmark, we just call it "is" which is the same word we use for "actual" ice and therefore even worse than calling it icecream. I agree that the term "frozen cream" is much better

Oh, And we had ice milk when I was a kid because we couldn't afford ice cream; I liked (and still do) ice milk better, but it should be frozen milk.

Have you ever had Ice Milk? It used to be sold in the freezer section with ice cream but it seems to have disappeared. You could put scoops of ice milk in a glass and add milk. It gave the ice milk a wonderful crunchy surface kind of like a thin coating of ice.

OMG, it's nearly 2am here and there's a pint of Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch in the freezer and thanks to you it is now CALLING ME. I shall resist however, since I'm heading for bed in a few and should not eat an entire pint of ice cream before bed.

Oh, and as some others have noted, you should try making your own one day. It is so worth it.

I used to work in an ice cream factory. Whenever the milk went bad, we poured it into a tank labeled, "Use For Chocolate Only." To this day, I can't bring myself to eat chocolate ice cream.  You can put chocoate on anything...ANYTHING...and it will taste OK.

youve obviously never made your own ice cream. i watched my grandpa do it. you put ice and a few other ingredients into a churner and CREAM it, until it is the consistency you are familiar with today. so its kinda like a smoothie. over 50% of it is made of ice.

When I was in grade school, we made ice cream by putting ingredients for vanilla ice cream in a zip block baggie inside another bigger zip lock with ice and salt in it and tossed it around like "hot potato." That's what I think of when I think "why do they call it ice cream?"

1. Your eyebrows are magnificent.

2. There is ice in Ice Cream, but as you semi-acknowledged, it's little tiny pieces.

3. Ice Cream is good for the soul, but not always the colon. 'Specially if you are lactose-challanged...

But ice cream used to be called "iced cream" and iced means "to chill with ice" but not by adding iced, just using the cold from it.

People got lazy and started dropping the d because it's easier to say.

Also they don't use ice to chill it now-a-days of course, but the word stuck.

... and now you know, the rest of the story.

But I like your ideas/questions better. :)

I always like to let my ice cream melt a little and go around the edges too, that's the best part.

If you get snow where you live you should try some home made snow cream, it's delicious (as long as you don't use any yellow snow!).

To answer your question. Ice Cream is called that because when it was first made. A dish of cream would be placed in a bucked of ice and salt. The ice was used to chill the Cream. Hence you get "Iced Cream" and was shorted for who knows why reaced to "Ice Cream". hope that helps
