  • @6:56 "drive the hwheels"... cool h-whip

  • Wow, this is great! I leaned something!

  • I love this video .. very simple and crystal clear also relaxing explanation

  • Okey..

  • I love chevy

  • Nice job

  • 87 people drive automatics

  • @MrMohammed420 manual vs auto...still uses differentials!

any idea if this from the britanica library? I have been watching some of there videos in my aerodynamics class. Real similar, just as old, these videos do a great job of explaining!

  • resistance of the gear that connects two wheels must be properly designed. Or else, what happens if one wheel is stuck by certain obstacles ?

  • very easy to understand.. easy than 3d, solidworks animation..)

  • Excellent video!!!!

  • Wow this is easy to understand!

  • MORE SPOKES!

  • THE BEST VIDEO IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!

  • Wow.. it took a 50 year old demonstration for me to clearly understand this, yea, classic vids rule..

  • Has anyone seen the old educational video on how engine oil works? I seen it on youtube but can't remember how I found it. I want to make a playlist with all these old but super educational videos.

  • So it was white people who invented Ghost Riding the Whip, except it's to triumphant orchestral brass music.

  • Understanding this is easier than blinking

  • This was made in the days when the US had a purpose in life, other than hollowing out its manufacturing base, so that it could demand Tribute, with menaces, under the guise of Intellectual Property (IP), from those who now manufacture the things that people want to buy. Great video.

  • @charlessmyth Yeah, this was made when General Motors was REALLY "General Motors."

When New York City had the 1939-40 World's Fair, General Motor's "Futurama" exhibit was the singularly most impressive exhibit ever put up by a private corporation; the people on line to see it were astounding.

GM also built a Pontiac (remember Pontiac?) all made of Plexiglass for The Fair that still exists! The car only has 86 miles on it with its original UNIROYAL tires!

  • where the fuck was this video when i was studying gears ?????

  • Great video!

  • 86 people have invented something better than the differential.

  • this is fucken perfect!!!

  • This is how things should be explained!! Is perfect!

  • Awesome explanation. With this design, would one wheel always receive full power and only the other wheel is allowed to turn faster/slower?

  • @bigflytrap

No. Both wheels are driven equally by the mechanism. It doesn't matter which axle shaft carries the large crown wheel, as the shaft is rotating freely inside it. See 4:06 to 4:20.

  • Brian from Family Guy would have had a heart attack after he heard the narrator pronounce "wheels".

  • I understood differential gear. Plus, now I want a Chevrolet.

  • Finally - so that is that thingy in the commercials for cars. For the first time in my life I have understood something about automobiles!

  • Ahh now i understand a differential...

  • I need to find as many of these style videos as I can. I have a point I need to make about modern education

  • I didn't skip the intro!

  • think of all the custom pieces that had to be manufactured for this demonstration...

  • Love the steamroller slicks at the end.

OSHA would have had a field day with the two folks walking the wheels.

Very cool video. Thanks for posting.

  • This is a very nice way of explaining technical stuff. They start from the most basic then going to the complicated stuff.

  • i wonder if 83 retards have been watching UTUBE!!

  • superb..

  • this was amazing

  • old times are the best times

  • @TheFiratunal not for everyone

  • Awesome ! Awesome !! Awesome !!!

  • It is called ( wait for it... ) The Differential!

  • I liked it, because, I, somehow, find it, funny... :D

  • Amazing.

  • MORE SPOKES!!!!

  • Superb video.

  • I was always confused about differentials. Now I know exactly how they work.

  • @Paladin7537 Don't worry, you'll forget soon enough, And then you'll have to watch it again. And again. And again...

  • Skip to 1:52 for beginning of tutorial.

  • foarte frumos

  • wow i didnt know we had differentials in the 1930s ahahahhahha

  • so whats the difference between a limited slip differential and a locked differential. i know that with a lsd both wheels should spin the same but how does it work?

  • this tutorial vid is amazing!

  • I always wondered exactly how it work and now I know. This vid explained it so well.

  • Now for an LSD video ...

  • excellent video. I did not know before that in early cars before implementation of differential they connected only one wheel to the engine

  • i never even thought about that... well thanks for the explanation!

  • Simple & easy to understand....cool...

  • Very good. The one aspect tho of the tunnel in the floor that accomodates the drive shaft is; that it adds strength to the overall intergrity of the car.Even today the designers have left the tunnel in the floor of the car even tho they are front wheel drive. The new cars do not have the seperate frame the old cars did but still have the tunnel in order to maintain the structural integrity.Check it out next time your in your car.Or anyones car for that matter.

  • Marvellous video.....very basic n effective....

  • BEST Tutorial

  • This is a very good video. Really easy to understand

  • What an educational video should be.

  • so simple and useful information, thanks!!!!

  • MOAR SPOKES!!!

  • @joostin123 EVEN MORE SPOKES. (EMT)

  • wha? 8:54 ghost ride the whip. innovators

  • cool,nice old skool vid

  • AWSOME

  • Great information and so simple

  • 83 people didn't understand, lol

  • oooh, the original plankers!

  • uplaod more for us

  • I actually learned something!

  • snackey smores for everyone.

  • whoever created this tutorial should be a pedestal of how things should be taught.

  • @BlackMagiX12 Back in the days when one actually had to learn the hard way, not like the laziness of today.

  • Wow, what a great video!

  • 1930, that means it cant be correct, pfft. Joking, what a fantastic demonstration.

  • It wouldn't be an old-timey information video without a crazy-dangerous demonstration at the end.

  • wow

  • even a turk can understand this video

  • Event after all these years all cars do not have flat floors....Probably the engineers of today did not see this video :p

  • Even my cat can understand this video.

  • Absolutely brilliant! This is called explaining, as opposed to dumping a ton of facts on the learner's mind. Notice how the narrator speaks slowly and pauses just long enough for information to sink in, before moving on to the next concept. Notice also how the narration accompanies the visual aid, so they work in concert. Most educators today fail to explain because they assume that you already know what they know. This should be a course for educators!!!

  • @riccello Cannot agree more on your point!

  • @riccello This is why our grandparents always bitch about modern educators

  • @riccello totally agree, the art of teaching is a lot rarer than people think, reducing an idea to its simplest form for explanation is a skill, reading a book to a classroom isn't

  • @riccello could you give an example of such?

  • I need the same tutorial about Automatic gearbox :D

  • @LPWWE06 watch?v=2Ld6xhJuGBk&feature=related

    He is good!

  • @3gh2 thanks man! :)

  • All physics teachers should be trained with this video and this teaching style should be mandatory! I bet you this one simple idea would completely better the world of physics, and it would give a confidence boost in students like no other. The video is boring like any video in black and white with mono audio, but that's because its 2011, that kinda stuff puts 2011 kids to sleep regardless the content. Update the same exact teaching style with 2011 technology and school will be fun! Guaranteed!

  • @jnwpse sooo... special effects and 3d? lol

  • Comment removed

  • well, this is explained.. today they don't explain so you can't fix stuff or understand stuff :(

  • Very good video.

    Reguards from Brazil

  • This video rocks, it explains what we are doing nowadays to offer more different gear to everyone.

  • This just blew my fucking mind.

  • 83 PEOPLE FAILED PYSICS CLASS

  • YEA!!! nice retro video @!!! now i no the diff is just so simple

  • i dont know why i watched this but this is amazing

  • Awesome explanation

  • The best tutorial ever!!!

  • now if everything would be explained like that id go straight back to school and never leave '--'

  • this is amazing im a mechanic and this is the best explanation ive ever seen

  • Since when was Alan Thicke alive in the 1930's?

  • genius!

  • This must have been made back when the US education system was half decent, now all the money goes to Health Care and Retirement, good thinking for the future.

  • i also thought of this principle whenever i am stuck on muddy road

  • Straight to the point and simple enough for a grade schooler to understand. Awesome!

  • Are these fitted in normal front wheel drive cars as well ?

  • @sohaibthephilosopher You bet! cept the differential is in the gearbox housing, to make a whole complete unit known as a 'transaxle' :)

  • Impressive. great education. Thx

  • What's wild, if I'm understanding this right, is that the wheels dictate how much power they get from the driveshaft by static demand. In other words, according to the need of the moment. It's like the friction of each turn demands how much energy each wheel draws. This is amazing order in a chaotic world, and sure makes the engineer's job easier! Amazing!

  • This is one of the best explaination of the differential lock

  • are there any videos from these folks that explains "gearbox"?

  • That was the most excellent explaination ever

  • That exasperated way of saying spoke made me moist.

  • best!

  • Excellent video!

  • thx

  • as the saying...OLD IS GOLD

  • If its so smooth etc. why do the tires on a gm truck or suv squeal when they turn a corner I notice this on every GM product.

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 That's because the tire nearly pivots in place on tight cornering.

  • Huge fan of Vintage info videos!

  • This mustve of been made for the "stoned" community back then, because this was very well played out and explained. Im just gone right now and I still understood it lol

  • VERY good!

  • It is called... THE DIFFERENTIAL!!! lol

  • Awesome video...i wish things would be always explained as simple as this for every one to be able to understand. Nowadays, people tend to complicate things to seem smart

  • ghost riding at 8:54 lol

  • from Argentina: highly pedagogic teaching video. Excellent !!!

  • oh my god this video is amazing. everything explained so clearly. awesome

  • probably the best tutorial I have ever seen on this matter....

  • oh yes! one wheel drive car :DD

  • Chevrolet is not the same now. Used to be like BMW of today.

  • @FrapsYou thats because they are manufacturing in china and brazil

  • first ever ghost ride

  • Is this from a series? can i find more explanations elsewhere?

  • awesome video :D

  • awsome !

  • Excellent!

  • The man's voice is so massive. I would believe anything he said.

  • @keepyawaitin

i think i heard him call you a idiot and a nonse.

  • Now I go build my own differential!

  • The guy who created this tutorial should be teaching at college till the end of the world

  • excellent explanation!!!

  • ne alaka

  • The best explanation ever , THANKS.

  • very nice

  • thanks a lot

  • that was great. great way of showing how a diff works

  • great video!

  • til watchin this vid i thought there was magic inside the differential

  • We need more spokes!

  • This is an excellent video, they made em' better in the old days eh!

  • thanks a ton! amazing video!

  • Excellent tutorial!

  • This is simply amazing

  • Absolutely agreed that this is the best tutorial i have ever seen !

People are to lazy to record such films now these days.

  • This film is better than a Haynes manual....

    FANTASTIC !!!!!!

  • archive .org has many such old industry, trade and instructional videos from the public domain that were filmed between and used for classroom instruction and commercials. There's at least one about car tires there that was real good. Most of the best seemed to have been filmed around 1930-1950

  • that was awesome!!!!

  • 79 People are still confused......

  • this is a brilliant video!!! really strips it back to basics!!

  • Lol, its funny how this proves the quality of education these days has gone down. thanks for this

  • absolutely simple and brilliant... took me 3 days to learn how it works in class... taken me 10 min to realise its simplicity!

  • amazing video, should use this in universities...

  • @firetrapp1

    Banned.

  • @ConceptVBS

    Banned from ... ?

Amazing video btw. Seems that almost 100 years ago they were better at explaining things.

  • @Janshevik i know. this video explains it amazingly well. other videos are way to complaex for me

  • @Janshevik yes indeed it saves lot of time

  • @firetrapp1 your next con vote, please

  • coool, I just finished doing differentials in school, interesting to see this video from the 30's.....bet they didnt have limited slip then

  • This is an excellent video. A pictorial easy-to-understand explaination on a complicated subject.

  • Fabulous !

  • '

try use the white tape on the tire and easily to see it

  • wow, im amazed, great job 1930s people!

  • Realmente é show de bola agora sei o q é e pra que serve um diferencial !!!

  • I knew how it worked before; but had I not, this video definitely would have explained it perfectly. Amazing representation.
