The story of Morihea is that he and some friends decided to invade Korea...they were caught and sentenced to death..The Japanese ambassodor got them released and he was banished to a northern region of Japan where he cut wood for a long time.

The founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba Didn't intend for Aikido to be used for fighting but for peace. He was originally a Swordsman & practitioner of several old Jujutsu Ryu. IMHO, Aikido died with him as he could really make the techniques work due to his vast knowledge of Jujutsu and his fighting experience. Problem with Aikido now is that Practitioners think they can do what O-Sensei could do but without fighting for real against resisting opponents...Not!! there is no magic in fighting!

Aikido Is A Great Martial Way, But There Must Be Real Resistance In Practice If Any Practitioner Wishes To Use It To Really Defend Themselves. No "Self Ukemi' Or "Ki" But Someone Must Really Be Trying To Tear You A New One. The Only Way To Get Good At Fighting Is By Fighting, There Is No Other Way!

@jukido987 I wouldn't go as far as Aikido died... If anything it expanded ten-folds ever since O-Sensei passed away. You are correct that there is NO MAGIC IN FIGHTING. Therefore, an Aikidoka must TRAIN HARD for at least 20 years before he or she will be able to use the techniques freely in a self-defense situation. People who don't think Aikido works are those who have never trained in any martial arts passed 20 YRS of experience.

@jukido987 prewar aikido was made to kill and nothing other. now, aikido is softer and there arent as many joint breaks because of learning purposes.

Based on some of the previous comments made: Ignorance is Bliss. Aikido just like any other art or discipline require rigurous training. Anyone can opine, but when you talk about a subject and you never tried it, you show deep ignorance.

Japanese people are not very tall...usually.... so. the idea that they would invent a martial art ineffective for short people is fairly preposterous...The idea that any martial art is Ineffective based of size is a bit silly. it may become MORE effective at some things than others, but all things have advantage and disadvantage.

there are marcial arts that become ineffective, with size. It seems otherwise, in the circunstances, the masters use something that seems belonging to their martial art, and it is not. Nikyu in aikido, is a kung fu technique, need more exemples?

i know very little about aikido, but i dont think that the point of martial arts is the style. i was convinced it was surviving. use what techniques you must. says i. and yea it did sound like i was disagreeing, but more expanding maybe. haha.

I'll give you one free on aikido, the point isn't just survive, it's survival of both the atacker, and the atacked. Because if you kill or injure the atacker, who you gonna practice with next? you'll have to search another guy, right?

No, they outlaw small joint manipulations, Aikido uses many wrist locks.

King Of Aikido? What? Ok , Ok , first of all. Didn't O Sensei say this this art wasn't really created by him? Didn't he say it was "Kami"? Their interpretation of "God" or The Creator? So if that's true , then our king of our world , our creator , is the true "king of aikido" and everything on this dimension for that matter. Morihei was like a messenger from heaven that came to teach us which was most like his life's ones truest purpose. It was his destiny.
