Not only that, but the Germans occupied France for several years - taking over entire towns, buildings, etc. Other countries they just bombed to shreds. There was an important resistance movement in France, despite this total occupation. Put yourself in the shoes of those simple souls selling butter...and the great ones, fighting and dying in secret.
