Definitely live...slight timing variations on original....less compression between the head and chest areas of her voice than in the studio version. Both sublime though!
The vocals are live. Why else would they leave some of the background vocals out? Sometimes group used pre-recorded music and sang live: the Supremes did this often on Ed Sullivan, at times even using what was called a "click meter" to pre-record Mary and Flo (and then Cindy) so they could move around while Ross sang into the mike. But Karen drops off on a few notes here, which wouldn't happen if it were prerecorded.
Sounds live to me, like you say, there are tiny changes to the recorded version. Live or not it is so deep and lovely. Look at Eva Cassidy, she could sing live exceptionally well. I say it's live.
1:26 to 1:28 - She pulls the mic away from her mouth, and there is no sound fall off! 2:50 +out of sync. The key is her voice, the reverb, separation (of her voice into two stereo elements to fatten up her voice) and EQ, are all the same as her studio version of this song. Also she is using an oversized foam windscreen to disguse her mouth. (No close undisguised shots of her mouth)!
Karen Carpenter is one of the best American singers to have ever lived!
@Berreya180 I disagree with you. I replayed those two points many times and I can't see what you're describing. How can she sing to match the entire "studio tape" with no flaws? Even in the studio there are too many takes to remember which is being replayed. If she is lip-synching this she deserves an Oscar, not a Grammy.
@Berreya180 I think it is live for a number of reasons: 1) Karen was a perfectionist who worked hard to make sure concerts sounded as close as possible to the original recording; 2) At 2:31, she pronounces "to" as "tuh" which she doesn't do in the studio recording- plus other parts sound different; 3) you don't hear her on the background vocals, which would've been a dead giveaway; 4) she was always close-miked, so she's not "hiding" anything...
@arfies ; 5) Biggie: YouTube automatically recognizes studio versions (and live ones available on CD) with an MP3 link on the bottom, which this one doesn't have. Plenty of other lip-synched Carpenters videos have this, no matter how bad the audio quality in them are... but not this one, which is the main reason I think it's live.
@Berreya180 With all due respect, listen to the first verse. When she sings "sweet and clear," and then in the next line "here," her voice is buried behind the music, whereas in the studio version they are clearly enuncieated and can be heard clearly above the instruments. Also, she pronounces certain words differently in this version. For example "again" in the second verse (which I happen to think she sings better in this version thanin the orginal).

@Berreya180 She is 100% not lip syncing on this video, it is too different to the original, not worse, but subtly different. The programme was called LIVE at the BBC, it was done live, that is a fact.
A little bit of further information, the original studio recording was the first time Karen had ever sung Superstar and it was recorded in just one take! The girl was perfection!
@Berreya180 No, she's singing live, or she pre-recorded it live and lip-synced the recording. The pronunciation of "baby," "I," and "told" are different from the album version, not to mention that her voice is slightly less resonant here than in the album.
Doesn't sound like she's lip syncing to me. This does not sound exactly like the recording. Sorry. There is not even any background singers like the recording.
Just wondering: How can the guitar player play without a cord?; where are the Violins, French Horns, and Harp player? I'll let you in on a secret. When a group records a song in the studio they often will make many "takes" . In the 1970's groups would lip sync and pretend to play over the original studio version or an alternate studio recorded version, for "Live" TV performances. No question that she was a first rate singer. This is just not a real live performance.
Sorry folks: I love and respect Karen Carpenter like I love the sun. But this is not a live performance. She Is lip syncing over the studio version. Back in those Days US performers were under contract to Lip sync all but concert performances. She apparently honored this with the BBC. Live reffers to their live appearance.
Click on the Carpenters medely (to the right) and you will hear what she sounded like in a live performance. Ahhh but this was pre recorded!
I know. I am sorry...I get sad this time of year because she is on the radio so much and I get thinking about her, and I want to blame her death on something, so I guess I was trying to say that if she had stayed a drummer, maybe she wouldn't have felt so "exposed" being out front, and then not worried about her weight as much. Does that make sense? I just didn't make my comment very well...I miss her! Music is just not the same today! Thanks modelquinn for slapping me into reality! :)
@rugal70 La pregunta es pertinente. Se llama "Superstar" porque quien narra la historia es una groupie enamorada de un guitarrista superstar ( "I fell in love with you before the second show") quien ya no le hace caso.
I was playing in bands in Calif starting the same time as Karen. Believe me, we all knew she was incredible and one of a kind. If there are Angels, she was one. I loved her then and always will.
Difficultly some interpretation will be able to move me more. I take form in my memory each one of the notes that take me for distant memories and they allow to lean out a little to the paradise, where I hope listen to you again.
So very lovely. I still can't fathom why she couldn't find a man in her numerous contacts strong for her and empathetic enough to understand her foilbles and take care of her. I could have done it had I only met her once--made lyrical love to her, make her laugh, make her relax, etc. An artist this naturally talented, absent of good and caring people in her life who cared about Karen. After catching my eye she surely would've been just fine--a bit more full figured, but alive and, yes, singing.
I saw this Angel among us 4 times; hearing her in person only made me fall in love more with her magnificent voice, and Richard's perfect arrangements. We miss you more as the years go by Karen, but your music is forever. Wolfsky9
