i really wanna open up my bass. what strings should i use? the strings i have on it are really low tention and really quiet. i want huge lows. like HUGE. i was thinking pirastro flexocors... would that be good?
@loganhedgepath well, kinda. It was all the modifications made that also make up a Karr model, but this was a solid wood bass with a LOT of "extra" put into it. We got a new batch of "magic" in that day and decided to use it all on just one bass. ;)
@tacobellmaritzabel he just walked in and played it (cause that's how he does it!) and didnt stop to extend the endpin out to where he normally would. The bass is spot on for a 3/4...
Excuse my ignorance, I know this is an extremely famous classical piece and was wondering what the name was? I'm a jazz bassist who is starting to play more classical and would love to start listening to this piece
The prelude from J.S. Bach's cello suite no. 1. There are only a few out on the web that I could find that were good for the bass. I would also recommend Bottesini, Koussevitzky, Dittersdorf, Dragonetti for the basic bass literature. There is more than that. There are plenty of players out there. You just need to have a couple hours on your hands and the will to explore the related videos bar.
Thanks! Yeah, my bass teacher gave me a Gary Karr dvd that has been both very helpful and VERY incredible, and I've been working a lot out of Simandl and some of Vivaldi's sonatas.

That was awesome. How difficult is it to play this piece, it being written for cello and playing it on double bass?
fassman316 2 years ago
It´s really really difficult!!!!!

Yes its incredibly difficult. And well played in this.
I believe actually its Koussevitzky's concerto for a solo tuned bass. But I cant be sure, Its been a while since I have heard it.
