@CreatingMagic After every shave I use 1) wet alum block & 2) The Gentlemen's Refinery aftershave balm... and then occasionally something with a scent, like a little splash of alcohol-based aftershaves or some cologne.
Interesting technique, but why are you using 2 hands with the blade?
Also, (and this could just be the video making it look that way) but how razorburned are you after this, it seems you are using a LOT of pressure.. ....
@arrowofthemorningsta Because it works better FOR ME. Not at all razor-burned; this method w/ str8rzr's the most comfortable shaving method for me, every DE razor/blade combo leaves more irritation.
@FineBowl I don't oil them, I use the little oily socks we sell, but if you'll apply oil do so after the shave and leave the razor open a bit to dry as best as possible before sealing that metal w/ oil
@Medicalv911 1) Angle of incidence control is infinite; blade edge can be nearly parallel to skin or perpendicular, as localized conditions warrant, and no safety razor has such range of angles. 2) The blade's bevel profiles are far more polished than a safety razor's admittedly keener (because it is thinner), harsher (less polished) blade.
I bought my first de safety razor kit from this guy. Really helpful and highly recommended. Lately I've been checking the straight razor section on BnB forum. But what's holding me back is the honing part. The infos about straight shaving is kinda overwhelming compared to de shaving.
@llanbull Don't be so scared about it, honing's no harder than shaving with a straight; neither's a piece of cake, both well within the average human's capacities.
How badly are the cuts if you mess up with a straight razor? Also, badass music, very groovy. I love the piano solo. good taste man, and nice shaving with that death sword.
@kmish213 I don't think you'll go to the ER from a str8rzr used by a newbie, but it can be pretty bloody. As long as you don't move the razor on the face parallel to its sharp part I don't think you'll have anything horrific.
@korbendallas13 hi...I'd stop doing against the grain, then. It is nice if you face can withstand it, but it isn't worth ingrowns. Most of my face is alright w/ 'ATG', but near the chin I can't do it with any blade, including a Feather 'Artist Series' which are unquestionably earth's sharpest. Some dogs just don't hunt.
I CANT see how using 2 hands on a straight razor does anything than cut yourself or just create a BAD habit and for others to see.....skin stretching is the easiest way and you WONT cut yourself..skin stretch with 1 hand..and slowly go in the proper direction with the hand that holds the razor...thats it..alum block helps and this guy makes it look easy which sometimes it is..but sometimes its not as easy as this guy shows it...plus doesnt look like anything to shave anyways
@jrcrow79 Well there you go, folks, 'jcrow79' declared he/she CAN'T see how using 2 hands on a str8rzr does anything than cut yourself or create BAD habits for others to see...and thus it must be so!
My $0.00 advice; forget all supposed internet expert opinions (including my own) and do what works best for YOU. This is about RESULTS-there's many ways to get them. Given my motor skills, a few regions of my face benefit ME from using two hands.
@AdvancedGentleman about 3-4x a week...I'm a very busy man, & I suppose it'd be a daily action were I another's employee. Like to take my time w/ it. If i wait 2.5 days to shave I'm notably uncomfortable where the neck meets the head.
Ah, my biggest problem is that I'm unable to stretch the skin with my fingers while all of the cream on my face since it's too slippery and my fingers remove the cream but dry shaving while stretching the skin is not a good idea with this blade. What is that thing you are holding in your left hand? It looks as if it's allowing you to stretch the skin without removing the cream. Pretty slick
@Reublol Ur face is still slippery after you shave the cream which is why he uses a grip you moron. Why don't you try str8 razor shaving before you attempt to comment?
@Reublol After you drag a razor across wet skin that just had cream on it, it's still slippery which is why alot of people (like the guy in this vid) use something that grips the skin. When you get old enough to shave you will find this out for yourself.
@joneslt I just use a 1x1" scrap of terry cloth towel, I'm sure a little gauze pad would work well. Stretching's very important; parts of my face I'll never get as good w/ a str8 as w/ a safety razor because just can't get them tight enough, but that's a small %, the vast majority's in better shape...and the process is far more enjoyable, too.
@thesuperiorshave I love str8 razor shaving. I first switch to a Merkursafety razor and got a closer shave than my Gillette Fusion could ever give me. I then switched to a str8 with disposable shark 1/2 blades (not ready for stroping/honing yet) and thats where the challenge began. The str8 gets my cheeks, jaw and neck closer than the safety does, but I haven't figured out yet how to get my mustache and chin without slicing myself to pieces...but I will not quit trying. These vids are gr8. TY
@cmaldonado8 CERTAINLY; you will almost assuredly cut yourself more than a few times learning the str8rzr, but nowadays I'd have a better chance of cutting myself with a safety razor.

@NoelyDeezNutz Just tried it once for the hell of it, and for the flighty little flyweights like this 4/8" singer I think it is preferred. For me. Hold with your toes if you get a better shave out of it :-)
This is a great video for me. A lot of tutorials feature heavier set men. But you, like me are skinny with a well defined face. Watching you has definitely helped my technique.
everybody gets cut, at some point even with a safety razor or a Mach 3 or Fusion. Shaving with a straight razor is an art, i have been doing it for 3 years and will never go back to anything else. I have 2 Dovos and love em. I even learned how to hone them. I wish i had the raw materials to make my own designs
@jiddyification if your blade is as sharp as it should be...you do not have to use lots of pressure (since this can cause razor burn), but just enough to make the blade "glide" you wont get a close shave on the first pass, hence doing a pass with the grain of the whiskers, another accross, and finally aganst it. It should be mention that he is using lots of lather and that makes a huge difference in the quility of the shave, also if you are using shaving oil. Lubrication is very, very important!
wow that was fast! i'm kinda getting interested in this old style of shaving but i'm just afraid of cutting myself... how many times have you cut yourself when just starting out?
@kirkkeener32 Too many to keep track of, unfortunately! I don't have wonderful control of my hands, but I got there in the end and after a couple of months even the tiniest nick's a rarity.
I just started out straight razor shaving and after 3 times, I havent cut myself one single time.
I dont know whether there's a secret to it but I'd suggest to try to get your razor as sharp as possible and then just try! It sure helps to be calm in the hand.
@kirkkeener32 A lot of people are worried about cutting themselves, but honestly I've never had a nick with a straight-razor that was any worse than a disposable one. If you do slip you can almost immediately feel that something wasn't right. It doesn't hurt because the blade is so sharp, but you'll say to yourself "Huh, I think I slipped a little there" and like a minute later you'll get a tiny trickle of blood. It's easy to patch up, and after a few weeks you probably won't do it anymore.
Hats off to you!!! If I tried to shave my face that fast with a straight razor, it would have looked like someone field dressed a deer in the damn sink.
Hey, I'm a couple weeks into shaving with a straight razor...and it's going well...do you have any tips for the shaving against the grain pass? I've got quite coarse hair, so it's definitely needed, but every single time, i nick my neck.
im very interested in using a straight blade, and i am looking for the best one for me... truth is i am one of those guys that just cant grow a beard unless i commit months months to something that is a blonde disaster, but still has to deal with shaving... what direction should i take? im looking at hart steel and zowada
Great idea using a little rag to keep the skin taut. I'll definitely try this on the next shave as slippery, wet fingers can be frustrating - and dangerous! ;)
Damn nice shaving. I just bought my very first straight razor yesterday and I cut myself about 2-3 times. I'm not sure if I plan on using it for actual shaving though, I just want to use it for precision and lining up my goatee and mustache. Do you have any tips/pointers?
@seanjohnman187 hi...I'd recommend a short-length 4/8" (or smaller) razor w/ a square point. They don't make those anymore, but there used to be such a razor in the peak production era. Very talented for trimming.
@thesuperiorshave I think my razor is a 1/2". I was just wondering what is the best way to clean hair off of it and how often should i switch the blade for a new one?
@thesuperiorshave It's one that uses interchangeable blades. On its package it says 1/2". I was wondering how often should I change blades on it and what's the best way of cleaning the hair off?
@seanjohnman187 He's quick, ain't he? He's very good with an old fashion razor and gets the job at the same amount of time as I do with a quick, disposable razor!
Hey, nice shaving man. I am looking at gettting a straight razor and brush to shave with. What do you recommend as a "starter kit"? (razor, brush, cream, etc.)
@hcoll "Will probably put..." does not equal "will put...". This isn't my first time to the rodeo. You do what works for you-I'll do the same, which means two hands for light and flighty blades like this one. This video's purpose was to show that conventions need not be followed, that it is the results that matter; this isn't figure skating, we're merely aiming to get as close a shave with as much comfort possible, a goal at which I succeed.
@thesuperiorshave " This video's purpose was to show that conventions need not be followed, that it is the results that matter" Should have put that in the description :)
@hcoll All we see here, is a guy who uses a tool with nice and fast results the rest is unnecessary. And yes, someone who does 3 passes in 5 minutes has every right to claim that using 2 hands can be useful
@224ramones Dovo is a fine choice...if you have average-thickness fingers, get a 5/8" full hollow ground round point Dovo. If you'd say you've large fingertips, get a 6/8" full hollow ground round point Dovo. They both work well, but the tang's extra thickness will be of great benefit to anyone w/ larger, rotund digits.
It has been nearly a year, but I'm sure the cream is either one of Dovo's varietals or the Omega soap in a tub.
Do you really think you have to shave against the grain? Doesn't that increase the chance of getting an ingrown hair? I've always heard we should avoid this...
@Carbolicsmokeball26 Shaving against the grain w/ a str8rzr's not like with other methods that lift hair. It is more gentle, but ultimately can still cause irritation that wouldn't occur shaving with/across growth patterns. Some parts of my own face shouldn't have it regularly, but it is easy to become addicted to the closeness. Your choice!
I just started shaving with a straight about three weeks and I am seeing improvement. There's a long learning curve, I was told 6 months to a year of daily shaving. The easier to shave areas of the face aren't much of a problem now, I just need more practice on the chin, upper lip area . I will start using two hands now thanks to this video.
@oaklandtobangkok I don't know that I'd tell you to do that!! Though it eventually came naturally enough to me that I don't think of it today, it wasn't how I started nor how 99%+ would do it. But I think within 3 weeks of regular attempts you should be able to get to 'competent'. Good luck!
my skin is too slippery after my pass to get a proper grip for stretching. It kind of looks like you have something in your hand to help with that, but I can't make out what it is.
@thesuperiorshave - man you're so cool. you've got such a huge choice of all sorts of MACHS and shit and yet you choose the traditional way. well done. I'll learn this my self. I'm tired of paying some 200 Euros (cca 280 USD) each year just to let me shave. thanks for uploading this.
jtmoney; plz don't waste $ on cheap str8s from beauty salons, which will just discourage you from a wonderful lifetime hobby.
Any interchangeable blade should be alright, though-for whatever reason, poorer nations easily make ok disposable blades but good straight razors in my view only come from France, Germany, Japan, and USA.
If you want a real str8, save your $ 'til you can afford an entry-level Dovo.
Shaving against the grain's no issue w/ a str8; it isn't like electrics/cartridges.
Shaving with two hands, huh? That's an interesting style I don't think I've seen too much of before. I believe I've seen a video or two where people will use both hands to get an extra steady hold on the razor while shaving under their nose, but that's all I can think of. As I was watching, I was tempted to say that you should break that habit, because the other hand could be used to stretch the skin. But I guess you did your share of stretching near the end.
I also thought the double handed shaving was a little odd. I would tend to think shaving two handed like this would result in excessive pressure being used, which would lead to extra irritation.
When I saw that technique, my first thought was "razor is way too dull, and he is trying to compensate".
@Forethat 1) Much better. The greatest results; just impossible with 1 pass of the blade...for that, a modern cartridge is better.
2) Of course; that's likely more important than choice of blade. I shave right after a shower and rub Proraso Pre/Post Cream every shave. Takes 2 minutes to work.
3) ~3 months to feel there was nothing to improve upon, ~3 weeks to feel pretty confident.
@BobTheGreatX Depends on beard preparation and, most importantly, the blade.
Pass #3 against-the-grain will certainly irritate if you've started with a poorly-prepared face or if the blade wasn't up to the task, and indeed there are a few small parts of my face where it is never a good idea. Average str8rzrs can achieve irritation-free shaves with just pass #1 and #2, even without good beard prep, too.
@thesuperiorshave I was told never to go against the grain when shaving because it will cause razor bumps. I want to start using a straight razor and was wondering are the cheap straight razors they sell at beauty supply stores and good, because I can't afford a good one right now?
Just to add to the good razor buying advice from @theuperiorshave, I got my first straight on ebay, it cost just 2 eur [about 3 dollars] it was a vintage one made in Solingen Germany, the Mecca of straight razors, I paid another $20 sending it off to a razor honing service on a good forum called thestraightrazorplace and that was it! Proraso are excellent pre/post shave creams and soaps and very affordable This is another option if money is an issue as it was for me at the time.

Dante31 7 months ago
@Dante31
I havent cut myself to that day!
Toby48624 7 months ago
@Toby48624 What bothers me is that a straight razor can produce very nasty cuts since it is super sharp and long.
Dante31 7 months ago
@Dante31
The advice I can give you is. Always start out with the grain. Keep in mind to never use a "cutting" motion always scrape your face!!!!
If you want advice... I'm glad to help!
Toby48624 7 months ago

"straight razor" that has interchangeable blades is a shavette, they are cheaper than straight razors

Hey, I'm a couple weeks into shaving with a straight razor...and it's going well...do you have any tips for the shaving against the grain pass? I've got quite coarse hair, so it's definitely needed, but every single time, i nick my neck.

@darkshadowkingraptor no idea...was a 'random' YouTube-authorized choice.

Great idea using a little rag to keep the skin taut. I'll definitely try this on the next shave as slippery, wet fingers can be frustrating - and dangerous! ;)
Excellent video - thanks for posting!

Damn nice shaving. I just bought my very first straight razor yesterday and I cut myself about 2-3 times. I'm not sure if I plan on using it for actual shaving though, I just want to use it for precision and lining up my goatee and mustache. Do you have any tips/pointers?
seanjohnman187 10 months ago
@seanjohnman187 hi...I'd recommend a short-length 4/8" (or smaller) razor w/ a square point. They don't make those anymore, but there used to be such a razor in the peak production era. Very talented for trimming.
thesuperiorshave 10 months ago
@thesuperiorshave I think my razor is a 1/2". I was just wondering what is the best way to clean hair off of it and how often should i switch the blade for a new one?
seanjohnman187 10 months ago
@seanjohnman187 Hi...what do you mean by "1/2"? Half-hollow? 4/8" size? Is this a 'real' straight razor, or one that uses interchangeable blades?
thesuperiorshave 10 months ago
@thesuperiorshave It's one that uses interchangeable blades. On its package it says 1/2". I was wondering how often should I change blades on it and what's the best way of cleaning the hair off?
seanjohnman187 10 months ago
@seanjohnman187 He's quick, ain't he? He's very good with an old fashion razor and gets the job at the same amount of time as I do with a quick, disposable razor!

Hey, nice shaving man. I am looking at gettting a straight razor and brush to shave with. What do you recommend as a "starter kit"? (razor, brush, cream, etc.)
Thanks!
Cunhamatatta 11 months ago
Damn! That is some impressive technique! I wish I could make passes like that!
b8sam6cash 11 months ago
No need to use two hands. Will probably put unnecessary pressure on the blade.
hcoll 11 months ago
@hcoll "Will probably put..." does not equal "will put...". This isn't my first time to the rodeo. You do what works for you-I'll do the same, which means two hands for light and flighty blades like this one. This video's purpose was to show that conventions need not be followed, that it is the results that matter; this isn't figure skating, we're merely aiming to get as close a shave with as much comfort possible, a goal at which I succeed.
thesuperiorshave 11 months ago 6
@thesuperiorshave " This video's purpose was to show that conventions need not be followed, that it is the results that matter" Should have put that in the description :)
But yeah, whatever works for you.
hcoll 11 months ago
@thesuperiorshave Totally agree with you. Some many people want to tell you their is only one way to do things. Selfish in my opinion.
senore01 9 months ago
@hcoll All we see here, is a guy who uses a tool with nice and fast results the rest is unnecessary. And yes, someone who does 3 passes in 5 minutes has every right to claim that using 2 hands can be useful
plomari69 11 months ago
hey i have questions. im very interested in buying straight razors. do you recommend that i get a dovo? and what shaving cream are you using?
224ramones 11 months ago
@224ramones Dovo is a fine choice...if you have average-thickness fingers, get a 5/8" full hollow ground round point Dovo. If you'd say you've large fingertips, get a 6/8" full hollow ground round point Dovo. They both work well, but the tang's extra thickness will be of great benefit to anyone w/ larger, rotund digits.
It has been nearly a year, but I'm sure the cream is either one of Dovo's varietals or the Omega soap in a tub.
thesuperiorshave 11 months ago
@CoffeeAddict20 Yes, for USA, APO/FPO/DPO, and Puerto Rico customers the price includes the shipping charge.
thesuperiorshave 1 year ago
Do you really think you have to shave against the grain? Doesn't that increase the chance of getting an ingrown hair? I've always heard we should avoid this...
Carbolicsmokeball26 1 year ago
@Carbolicsmokeball26 Shaving against the grain w/ a str8rzr's not like with other methods that lift hair. It is more gentle, but ultimately can still cause irritation that wouldn't occur shaving with/across growth patterns. Some parts of my own face shouldn't have it regularly, but it is easy to become addicted to the closeness. Your choice!

how much did your razor cost

I just started shaving with a straight about three weeks and I am seeing improvement. There's a long learning curve, I was told 6 months to a year of daily shaving. The easier to shave areas of the face aren't much of a problem now, I just need more practice on the chin, upper lip area . I will start using two hands now thanks to this video.
oaklandtobangkok 1 year ago

I'm tired of paying some 200 Euros (cca 280 USD) each year just to let me shave. thanks for uploading this.
kagolko 1 year ago
jtmoney; plz don't waste $ on cheap str8s from beauty salons, which will just discourage you from a wonderful lifetime hobby.
Any interchangeable blade should be alright, though-for whatever reason, poorer nations easily make ok disposable blades but good straight razors in my view only come from France, Germany, Japan, and USA.
If you want a real str8, save your $ 'til you can afford an entry-level Dovo.
Shaving against the grain's no issue w/ a str8; it isn't like electrics/cartridges.
thesuperiorshave 1 year ago
@thesuperiorshave have you tried any swedish razors?
knulluppad 1 year ago
Shaving with two hands, huh? That's an interesting style I don't think I've seen too much of before. I believe I've seen a video or two where people will use both hands to get an extra steady hold on the razor while shaving under their nose, but that's all I can think of. As I was watching, I was tempted to say that you should break that habit, because the other hand could be used to stretch the skin. But I guess you did your share of stretching near the end.
johnnytastetest 1 year ago
@johnnytastetest
+1
I also thought the double handed shaving was a little odd. I would tend to think shaving two handed like this would result in excessive pressure being used, which would lead to extra irritation.
When I saw that technique, my first thought was "razor is way too dull, and he is trying to compensate".
michiganlover 1 year ago
That's pretty awesome. I have a couple of questions:
1. How would you rate this shave compared to using a modern Gilette or similar?
2. Do you soften up the beard with a hot towel or something prior to the shave . If so, how long?
3. How long did it take to develop the routine?
Cheers
Forethat
Forethat 1 year ago
@Forethat 1) Much better. The greatest results; just impossible with 1 pass of the blade...for that, a modern cartridge is better.
2) Of course; that's likely more important than choice of blade. I shave right after a shower and rub Proraso Pre/Post Cream every shave. Takes 2 minutes to work.
3) ~3 months to feel there was nothing to improve upon, ~3 weeks to feel pretty confident.
thesuperiorshave 1 year ago 5
Does it irratate the skin going over it so many times?
BobTheGreatX 1 year ago
@BobTheGreatX Depends on beard preparation and, most importantly, the blade.
Pass #3 against-the-grain will certainly irritate if you've started with a poorly-prepared face or if the blade wasn't up to the task, and indeed there are a few small parts of my face where it is never a good idea. Average str8rzrs can achieve irritation-free shaves with just pass #1 and #2, even without good beard prep, too.
thesuperiorshave 1 year ago
@thesuperiorshave I was told never to go against the grain when shaving because it will cause razor bumps. I want to start using a straight razor and was wondering are the cheap straight razors they sell at beauty supply stores and good, because I can't afford a good one right now?
jtmoney091 1 year ago
@jtmoney091
