You can almost imagine the pilots thoughts. "Stick and rudder...stick and rudder...stick...AND A WHOLE LOTTA RUDDER....stick...." No wondor these guys are the best paid pilots in the air. My hats off. I can't even do this right in Flight Simulator...
The pilots did a phenomenal job by maintaining smooth, accurate and precise control of the rudder pedals, control column and thrust levers... GOOD JOB!
@SFConifer The wings are designed to flex as such. Some fatigue does occur, but A,B,C, and D inspections are performed to find and correct any fatigue.
Airbus: The Operations Manual will allow manual landings with up to 30 knots direct crosswind but only 15 knots for an Autopilot autoland approach. The computer cannot anticipate gusts and react fast enough. Pilots must land manually (even with an Airbus) on conditions like in this video, because that's what they are for.
Correct - it is actually a "new plane" and not converted. That said, it is actually a -200 (with the front loading capability) and winglets - just made in the late late 80 and early-mid 90's.
TOO Cool!!!! Some pretty good pilots. Are you sure it's a -400 model? I know it has winglets but, the upper deck looks a bit short for it. But, I guess they could have changes for the Freighter versions. I know it's got winglets but, those are being retro fitted on a lot of aircraft these days. I agree with that other poster's comment on the wing flex. I've never seen a video with that kind of wing flex before. Also note the big rudder inputs and wing control inputs on touchdown.
This is a beautiful 747-200 with winglets. The nose also lifts for "front loading" capabilities - a design request by Pan Am a long time ago. Note at 0:55 on the second bounce how close the #2 (inside port or left side) engine comes to the ground!!!??? The -200 was probably the best and most beautiful 747 ever made (after the SP). Even Air Force One is a -200! Notice the wing flex coming in too. Polar Air has some of teh best pilots too. Great video.
It is actually a converted 747-200 with winglets. You can see the "hump" is not long enough and also on the -400F the nose comes completely up for "front loading". That was a design request by Pan American way back when...
Absolutely! And seeing that it is the end of their flight, the wing tanks would be near empty, so that would allow them to flex more too. Awesome vid!

everything was done by autopilot, not pilots

@StasoNfromMoscow the computers on the 47 cant combat crosswinds like this this was all pilot input:)

ALS has done everything lol
StasoNfromMoscow 2 years ago
@StasoNfromMoscow your an idiot bud a computer cannot deal with crosswinds blowing over 15 knots. my uncle flies the 747 for atlas
betterdenu452 2 years ago
i dont know about 747 but airbus can))
StasoNfromMoscow 2 years ago
@StasoNfromMoscow ya and airbus you have no mechanical input to the controls. and the 747 is 2 times the plane anything airbus has
betterdenu452 2 years ago
The 747 AP is not able to land with crosswinds like this. Pilots must land it manually in conditions like this.
Airbus Autopilots neither are certified for crosswind landings. You must do it manually too.
falkowiegandt 2 years ago 2
no i disagree about airbus

The -400F doesn't have the stretched upper deck, but retains the original "hump".
