В оригиналі цієї української пісні є слова - "щедрик, щедрик , щедрівочка, прилетіла ластівочка..." Її співали, коли починався Новий рік. Зараз це роблять в ніч з 13 на 14 січня, виконуючи багато кому незрозумілий обряд, коли в сніг кидають зерно. А пояснення цьому є те, що до прийняття християнства у 988 році українці зустрічали Новий рік у березні. Цю щедрівку українці співають уже більше 1000 років.
